Hank Williams wrote this song for Bill Lister to record. Since Hank couldn't read or write music, he had to record demos on acetate discs. It was Bill Lister who found this acetate in his attic in San Antonio, TX as mentioned by others, and contacted Hank Jr, who was only 3 when his dad died. The video is the key to this recording, the storm was added to hide the pops and scratches from the original acetate disc.
Thanks for that info It's so interesting! I remember watching the video in 1989 and thinking it was so great to see given the lack of technology back then as opposed to now!
The video of Hank Sr was from about 1942 with the Grand Old Opry stars being taped for the Kate Smith Show in NYC. His lip movements were computer altered which was brand new technology in the 80s. This won CMA video of the year the first year it was offered.
Awesome song! I haven't heard this one in awhile by Hank Williams, Sr. and Hank Williams, Jr. Did you know that his dad called him "Bocephus" It's written on his guitar. Great reaction!!
Hank always wished he could sing with his dad so when a friend of Sr. who was in the band found the old recording hank took it to the studio and had his voice put in to the same track and all that stuff but the video is always puts a smile on my face
@@RockN2Country The video was definitely a very special part of this song. It has a long backstory as it was an unreleased song of Hank Sr. that was found 50 years or so later. It was the first video to take footage from a long ago show of Hank Sr. and merge it into a new video of today. You should look up the history on this song. Enjoyed the video, keep em coming!
Hank Jr was 3 when Sr passed. Sr wrote and recorded it, then In the late 80s Jr rerecorded it. When Jr recorded it, he had auto of Sr singing mixed with it. Check out the official music video Jr released with this recording... Mix of both singing and playing "together". It's definitely a cool song/video, but you can definitely tell how far technology has come since the late 80s. Haha ❤️🐘❤️
Really fun song, it makes me miss moseying down dirt roads in Jeff Davis County TX. It's the scene straight out of an old Western movie, with only two radio stations playing old classics like this. Time didn't change things out there and these songs surely fit the mood. Now I'm longing for a road trip!
#RockN2Country I love this song. Hank Sr. was 29 when he died, Hank Jr. was 3. The video is really cool Jr. dubbed himself into a video of his dad and it kinda looked like they were playing together. Kinda.
@James Weekley Yes sir, I totally picked up on that and loved the texture it added to the song. Those of us who grew up with vinyl appreciate the scratches and pops once in a while!
I've never heard this version before. Isn't technology great? I bet Hank Jr. was so excited to hear this since he was never able to sing with his daddy. You know that had to be something he dreamed about his whole life. I could only imagine. Great reaction, Don!
This wasn’t released to too many radio stations in 1951 so Hank Jr could claim it as his. The video of this song was the best of technology in 1989. Today would appear much more real
Hank died when Hank, Jr was just a toddler. It was a collaboration of a track and Hank, Jr. The track was a video. Try to find that one. It is interesting how real it looks.
Listening to this I got another song stuck in my head. Finally came to me. “Crying my heart out over you” by Ricky Skaggs. Both songs are great old country. Love it!
Hank Jr was added to the track hank Jr was only 3 when sr died this sing was found in someone attic and it was brought to Jr it was never heard before then
@Christopher Pinkard Thanks for the intel. That's one of those great stories about how a song like this eventually came about. Finding an album in an attic--such a cool backstory. And welcome aboard!
Hank Sr. died young and Jr. never really knew his dad so they just used the recordings. There's actually a version of "Move it on Over" with Hank Sr. Hank Jr. and Hank 3 which is pretty cool
You should have watched the video then you would see that it was a special video put together with an old film clip of Hank Sr. From the 50’s and a recent video of Hank Jr. it made it appear they were singing together but in fact Hank Jr was only a few years old when Sr died. It’s an amazing video
I agree, the video is what this is all about. It was the first video to take old footage of Hank Sr from 50 years ago and do magic to put them in one video singing together. Possibly the greatest country music video ever made.
The original version was written and recorded by Hank Williams during one of his Nashvillesessions in 1950-51, but he decided against releasing it. It was not until many years later, in 1989, that the original song would get its first official release. The song was recorded by Bill Lister, who later gave the demo by Hank Williams to Hank's son.
It was the same as nat and Natalie cole, only hank did his first. the original recording of this song was found in an attic in San Antonio Texas. One of hank Sr. friends had it. I think the guy might of also played in Hank Sr's band. It had been there for over 30 years. An original Hank Sr recording that nobody ever heard.
@TheJimmieRodgersFan you are exactly right, I had to explain this to someone who called me a lier on another video. I respect you a lot for knowing facts about Hank. Big Bill Lister is the man's name that Hank toured with on the Hadachol medicine show.

No honey his Dad died when Jr was too young. He was just a kid. This was very special to Hank Jr to be able to sing with his Dad. An experience he thought he'd never have. You should check it out (just for yourself). I assume having a video went a long way in choosing which song he released. Being that Hank Sr died in '52 (I think), there probably wasn't a whole lot of TV footage of him to choose from.
@James DeMarco Thak you for the insight on all of that. And you are right about there not being much footage on Senior, which is what I experience anytime I want to just grab some stills shots of him off the 'net. There is some stuff, but very little.
