  • Red pill, or blue pill? This is a movie reaction to my first time watching The Matrix, released in 1999 and directed by The Wachowski Sisters. I'm stoked to finally learn about Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity and what this simulation is all about. What a super fun futuristic movie and I can't wait to watch the rest of them! Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne were a delight! The effects and filming style were super fun too. After watching Keanu in Constantine, I knew I needed more of his movies in my life. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching! Let me know YOUR thoughts in the comments below!

Regarding the kiss - I think of it as Neo in the Matrix realizes he's not dead because his body can feel Trinity's kiss. His digital consciousness then restarts his body and revives his dsi in full One mode.
The depth to which The One exists in and out of the Matrix at all times is explored later.

It's also another of the Oracle's statements proving true, when she says that Neo has "the gift" but that "it's waiting for something ... another life, maybe". Neo dies and then comes back to life as the One, "another life". The Oracle says it so casually I definitely missed the connection the first few times I watched the movie.

@@gchild1286 It's potentially both. Normally, when a person dies in the Matrix, their mind processes that as real death, so they just die.
Neo "died" in the Matrix... but through Trinity's prompting, the part of him that's still in the real world is able to acknowledge that the Matrix isn't real, so he essentially ignores his death... and that's the catalyst for him being able to see through the Matrix and understand it on a deeper level.

I'm glad you finally saw this movie. It is such a masterpiece, and the impact it had when it came out cannot be understated.
Hugo Weaving was indeed fabulous as Agent Smith. Just like you, I love the Déjà Vu scene. Another dialogue that is not often remembered or quoted (probably because it is so close to the pills part), is when Neo answers that he doesn't believe in fate, and follows it by "Because I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my life". I think it holds a very important weight even outside this movie. I feel it's a motto people should live by.

The common explanation for "love kiss" stuff is that Trinity send a signal to his mind that he's not really dead, but for me it's still a bit dodgy, because if that's the case then why no one thought about it before? Although, the writing is perfect, my favourite part is that The Oracle never said that Neo is not the one - he said it himself! Not only that, she also said he's waiting for another life! And she said that so seamlessly that it's almost impossible to catch on your first watch. That was mind blowing for me when I realised that.

This movie was so well thought out, every comment made about Neo from the beginning, turned out to be true. So Trinity loving Neo was told to her by the oracle. It was part of the story. Neo was waiting for his next life to become the one. So he had to die and then comeback as the one. His boss talked about the rules don’t apply to him. The guy that knocked on his door called him “my own personal Jesus Christ”. They told you he was the one through out the movie. In 1999, I saw the movie 18 times in the theater. This movie is one my lifetime’s favorites. I enjoyed your reaction.

I've read that in the original script, the humans were being grown so that their brains can be used to run the AI of the machines, because they make good AI computers. But the studio thought that this would be incomprehensible to the public, so they changed it to humans being used as batteries, which makes no sense because of the law of conservation of energy, but it sounds good enough for a movie. The original premise would also explain how agents take over people's brains in the matrix (or "bodies" in the simulation), and I like to think that that's what's really going on.

Sorry to keep banging the drum, given you say you will in the video, but I just want to be in ahead of all the people telling you not to watch either all the sequels or the most recent sequel, but I do think all four of the Matrix movies are essential parts of the story. The other chapters may not be as perfectly realized as this one, which is definitely the best movie in the series, but I like all of them to varying degrees. Even the third one, which I think is the weakest, has my favorite scene in the whole series in it (which obviously I won't explain now).
Given the Wachowski sisters have both come out as trans since the release of the first three Matrix movies, I think people would find ways to read that into the movies whether it was there or not, but they have confirmed in interviews that it was a conscious part of the movie. The idea of waking up and moving through the world with the feeling that something is fundamentally not right, that's an obvious parallel. There is also a story that Lana Wachowski had some dark ideation on a subway platform, which later inspired the scene where Neo fights Smith in the subway, and the scene ends with him claiming Neo as his real name, and not Thomas Anderson, the name he left behind.
Religion/faith is definitely a theme running through these movies, as is philosophy. When the guy visits Neo's apartment at the beginning looking for that disk, it's hidden in a copy of Simulacra and Simulation, a key text in the movie's themes. When first three Matrix movies were released on Blu-ray, they included commentaries by philosophers instead of the filmmakers, who weren't interested on commenting themselves.
As for the true love element that exists at the climactic moment, I think one of the most important things to understand about the Wachowski sisters is that they are deeply sentimental filmmakers. Their earnestness is definitely something that people have a love-hate relationship with, but I'm on board, and they have revealed more of it in their films and work as their careers have progressed (Cloud Atlas, in particular, is an overwhelmingly emotional film).
Although I like basically every movie the sisters have made, their best in my opinion is still their debut film, Bound. They had intended to make The Matrix first, but when they presented it to Warner Bros., the studio wouldn't sign off on the budget with two first-time filmmakers, so they went off and wrote Bound in like a week and made it independently, and afterward, Warner agreed to make the movie. It's a landmark queer film and a landmark neo-noir, and I highly recommend it (although there are a couple of hot and heavy parts in the first half that might be tough to work with re: RUclips community standards). I also highly recommend Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas, as well as V For Vendetta, which they produced and co-wrote but did not direct.
Also, fun fact: this was where Keanu met Chad Stahelski. Stahelski was Keanu's stunt double on the first three movies, and then later went onto co-direct the first John Wick movie and direct the three sequels solo.

When this movie came out, Keanu was NOT known for any kind of martial arts action. And this was before any kind of deepfake that would let you think someone else was doing the stunts. It was super shocking to see actors like Keanu and Lawrence doing chained kicks that seriously looked LEGIT, and without any camera tricks like Taken's 15 cuts per second (or 3 cuts per arm swing). It's super rare that something like that catches you so off guard, and that was just a nice little surprise to really get me really engaged in this movie.
Also, the marketing for this movie was almost non-existent. No one knew the plot twist or that "the matrix" was an actual thing. I thought this was just gonna be some lame summer fare with some spare effects, like "Jumper" (with Hayden Christensen before he quit acting). Boy were we all wrong!!! Everyone copied this movie after it came out, it was a cultural phenomenon -- so much so that you could accurately recite quite a lot about the story without having seen it.

Oh, also, another movie that is visually stunning and has many themes and ideas in common with The Matrix is called Dark City. It actually came out the year before, so many view it as The Matrix before The Matrix. I probably already put it in your form if it's not on your LBX, but in particular I think most people who would tell you to watch it would vote for the Director's Cut, which should be widely available online. It looks like the DC is on Prime in Canada, but if you do have to settle for the theatrical cut, the main thing you can do to make the experience more enjoyable would be to silence the first couple of minutes. One of the big sticking points that the director, Alex Proyas (The Crow) wanted to remove from the film was voiceover added on top of the first shot that explains a bunch of plot points that are supposed to be revealed as the movie goes on. The studio insisted on it, but if course it takes away some of the film's mystery and intrigue.

I'm so sorry for your loss. May your fur-baby be at peace, playing by the Rainbow Bridge.
Back in May I watched my 16 year old, born deaf/blind, Aussie Shepherd pass away. Shortly afterwards, I buried her in the backyard...in a grave prepared for her in advance of her death. For 14 years she was my life, and I hers (she was a foster from an old HS friend). She was my heart-dog. A day doesn't go by without me thinking about that beautiful, stubborn, and ever loyal and loving blizzard of a dog (double-coat of fine, fluffy, white fur that killed a number of vacuums over the years...but that's life with this too smart for their own good breed).
Take your time and grieve in whatever way, and for however long, that you need. Plenty of us fellow pet owners know where you're at.

Most people who watch this for the first time now can't really go into this fully blind because of pop culture. When I saw it in the cinema it was mind blowing. Bullet time, the world is a simulation, fight scenes, questions about fate vs free will. This wasn't really touched upon in anything I've seen before. And A.I. taking over has been done before in great movies, but this was different somehow. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it stood out among other A.I. stories.
The Trinity kiss thing I didn't have a problem with, but I've noticed it has been brought in issues more recently. For me it comes back to fate vs free will thing. Do you choose to love someone or not. Sounds a bit like Jaime Lannister thinking. lol
As for the sequels, some have issues with them, not me. I like them. It asks more questions again. Purpose, destiny, truth.
I hope you watch The Animatrix too. I saw them before I saw the sequels and they are amazing, world building, especially The Second Renaissance.
Also, I can't remember if you said in a past video you were a Longmire fan in a past video. If you are, does anyone look familiar? 🤔

I always like watching the Oracle dance around words to get Neo to tell her what she wants to hear. She didn't tell him he wasn't the One. She got him to tell her if he believed he was the One. "But then you already know what I'm going to tell you." And then when he said he didn't believe, she told basically told him he could be if he wanted to be. "Looks like you're waiting for something."

Sorry about your dog. About a year ago we had to say goodbye to our dog, almost 14, who we had since he was 3 months old. (Also lost 5 cats from 2016-2019, four we had from kittens, the fifth an adult stray. Also between 14 and 16 years old.)
An intriguing throwaway line from the Oracle, when she told Neo he wasn't The One, was that he was waiting for something - the next life, maybe. Turns out that was, of course, spot on, because he did have to die first before "unlocking" The One. You'll find out that there are no throwaway lines in this entire series. After seeing them all, go back and see how this one is in light of the end story. Sort of like watching the Star Wars episodes in chronological order, where lines from A New Hope have a whole new meaning after seeing Ep. 1-3. :)
On your comment about not liking Trinity's confession of her love for Neo and him coming back from being dead, the mind dying in the Matrix precedes the body, and her kiss (and her adrenaline shot to help keep him alive) was the sensory trigger to stimulate him into reviving in the Matrix - where he always had the ability to defy death in that way, but had not yet put it to the test. Again, the Oracle knowing all of this is because she is also plugged into the Matrix, and has access to all of their thoughts and feelings in some respect. As was mentioned about free will, there was no certainty of how it would turn out, but the Oracle knew that connection was the important one. She knew how the future should unfold, even if no one knew at the time they would ever get to that point.

You're focussed and work with the beats and flow of the storytelling, so when you speak throughout the film, it's during moments that never overlap what might be significant information you could otherwise miss. For me, it's hard to under-state how defining this movie was for me. In 99, I was a Soph in HS. This was one of the first R-rated movies I ever saw, with friends at a theater. It was absolutely incredible - the ideas, the tropes, the execution and style... Smith's monologue about how humanity was a virus seriously influenced my outlook on the world for a LONG TIME. It made so much sense!

I find it interesting that the Wichowski's used such a religious tone in the movie (Neo prophesied to return and save the world, #303 and Trinity representing the Godhead, Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon in the Old Testament, Cypher is "Judas" the traitor), within the theme of being controlled by A.I. "Trinity" is in Marvel's "Jessica Jones" series, Agent Smith is the lead in the DC Comics "V for Vendetta," Morpheus has a supporting role in Marvel's "Ant Man and the Wasp," and Keanu's contribution to comic book culture in cinema so far is just DC's "Constantine," so far as I know.
As for this movie ... it's funny how people are so plugged in these days, and yet they seem to know less about the real world and the world as it has been. The Matrix is creeping up on us.

Genuinely a movie you have to watch five or six times to see all the hidden nuggets. A handful for you, Switch calls Neo “copper top” when she meets him for the first time… because he’s still plugged into the power plant and is a battery still. Room 303 is where the movie starts, which is why Smith knows to go there, it’s where Trinity had her initial fight scene. Neo is The One and people frequently use the term Jesus (or derivatives like “scared the bejesus out of me”) throughout the movie… also, Neo and One are anagrams.

I remember the weeks and months after this movie released being really interesting in school. One morning my Data Structures professor barged into class full of energy. He'd seen The Matrix the night before, and was excitedly recounting *the entire movie* to the class. It was like someone put words and pictures to ideas he'd had rattling around in his head for ages and you could tell he saw it as an affirmation of sorts.

For me, I actually fell asleep after the first 15min because I was so confused and lost about what was happening. This was back in 2000 when computers were still a relatively new thing and weren't a big part of everyone's daily life yet so a lot of the ideas and concepts were hard to grasp (at least for me). Some trivia for ya.
The streets named in the Matrix are Chicago(my hometown) street names.
When Neo said, "Whoa" before jumping off the rooftop, that was a nod to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures.
When Neo said, "Guns. Lots of guns." Keanu also says this in John Wick as a nod to The Matrix.
After Neo fights Mr. Smith, then steals a man's cell phone, when he says, "Mr. Wizard, get me out of here!" Mr. Wizard is referring to a children's cartoon.
Keep in mind, the reason being in The Matrix is dangerous is because ANYONE that sees them automatically connects to an Agent. Now think about all the people around you everyday! That's insane! And great writing!
Beautiful editing by the way. I really mean it.

Hugo Weaving injured his leg and had to have a surgery
    Lawrence Fishburne busted a wrist
Carry Ann Moss broke an ankle (and she hid it to the crew because she feared to be replaced by another actress)
And lastly, Keanu Reeves had vertebrae to be fused to avoid partial paralysis (it's the reason he uses mostly his harms instead of his legs in most of the fight scenes)

I'm new so, I'm sorry to hear about your loss 😢💔❤️ I've been there, there are no words..... virtual hug 🤗
There's over 300 comments so it's possible it's been touched on, but i have to...too lol. Even for the smartest and most perceptive ppl, the Matrix is a movie that requires multiple viewings to fully understand and appreciate, i hope you watch it at least one more time in the near future. The great shots weren't just that, they were new techniques and ways of filming never used before, the Matrix (Wachowski Brothers (now sisters) literally revolutionized film making. You were half right, There's one mistake in the movie, the way Trinity words her love at the end where it makes it seem it's her love that revives him and while beautiful and heartfelt, its not it at all. If you watch the Oracle scene again, she basically tells us everything that will happen. He wasn't the one that day, "you have the gift but you're waiting for something", "For what?" "Another/Next life" "One of you is going to die". Trinity didn't revive him, she simply pointed out he couldn't be dead because he's the one, the reason she knows he's the one is because shes inlove and thats what the Oracle said, never that she would give him life or revive him. He had to die to become the one, it was the final step for him to become connected to the Matrix as a program, destroying Smith like an... anti-virus as he's part of the system now. Love does play a big role in all movies but it's at a conscious level in decision making not fairytale kisses lol
My apologies for to long comment, hope this helped, and i hope you'll watch the others with an open mind, there can't be another matrix, new levels, new adventures ❤

What's funny is I haven't even seen the movie. I just know THAT clip only for meme purposes. 😅

The music during the lobby shootout is the Propellerheads. The album is called Decksanddrumsandrockandroll and it is awesome.

When i was young I had Deja Vu all the time, almost daily, but as I got older it happened less and less, where as now i have maybe had 1 or 2 instances in last 10 years.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your dog Kaielle, the loss of a beloved member of our family is always hard. I lost my dog Joey like 7 years ago now , 😢 it never gets easy but you try to remember the good times you shared.
13 and seeing this movie for the 1st time in the theater with my friend and his dad was so cool and I didn't even understand yet just how connected to our lives it would become.
I loved your post viewing discussion, you made some very interesting observations. No matter how many times you see it it never fails to amaze . I kind of get what you mean about the whole kiss thing (sorry I get ranty) you took the red pill and went down the rabbit whole congrats .

Love this movie to death, the Wackowskis are creative geniuses, love how most dialogue in the movie walks the metaphorical tightrope "Why do my eyes hurt?... You've never used them before"

Pretty cool reaction. The Matrix is one of my favorite movies of all time and the whole Trilogy gets lots of love tbh. The Matrix is however one of most important films imo as well.
The "kiss of life" as I call it from Trinity was I believe, to show the true power of love, coupled with strong belief and will.....it's a force so strong it can overcome even the very spectre of death.....VERY powerful scene looking back at it...
All in all - as it was said before, The Matrix isnt simply a movie...its a documentary 👀.
Be safe. Peace love and light.

Great reaction. On the question of why AI would create war disease, etc etc, I take this movie as an opportunity to question everything. For example, how can you be sure that you aren’t just reliving the same 14 seconds over and over again and your memories are implanted?
