According to Gandhiji, "Nehru is british among them(nationalists) ".So he might have convinced that Nehruji is better choice to represent India on global stage by keeping the national interests in mind.
Sarkar Patel was the seniormost leader of congress after gandhi. He had good educational qualifications and vast political experience compared to Jawaharlal nehru . If patel had become pm of india 🇮🇳 in 1947 india 🇮🇳 would be a developed and prosperous country today like japan .

The choice of Nehru was the correct one. Just after independence the situation was quite critical. Under such a situation the state control economy was the right one.
He developed core industries, this is still the foundation of the economy.
After opening up the economy, we didn't see any valuable contribution from the corporates especially in the research and innovation unlike China.
