    Lots of these how to's on changing a timing chain and gears on you tube but very few outlining the whole procedure.Everything seems to start with the oil panand timing case cover already off. The start of the job involves removal of the timing chain cover. On older small block Chevs that involves (at very least) the slight lowering of the oil pan to clear the ends of the lip on the timing cover. Some choose to trim the corners off of that lip so any future timing chain work can be done without slacking off several of the pan bolts so the cover wont tear the end seal while removing/installing the cover. Very few go into that step first.

    you are correct at lining the dots on crank and cam but what all the guys on youtube fail to mention is that dot to dot is not a compression stroke or the position to stab the distributor....so if you stab the distributor with dots aligned then it will be 180 out, so the dots on cam sprocket and crank sprocket have to be in the 12o'clock position with both intake and exhaust valves closed for it to be correct....the ratio is 2 crank revolutions to 1 cam revolution....if you stab distributor with dot to dot position then there is a possibility of valves and piston colliding during engine crank attempts you dont want piston coming up and valves opening

    • @rockerpat1085
      @rockerpat1085 6 лет назад +2

      Right!!! If the distributor were stabbed this way it will be 180 out every time. You are correct 12 and 12 on the timing marks and the distributor will be correct!!! Keep Rocking!!!

    • @rockerpat1085
      @rockerpat1085 6 лет назад +4

      But you're incorrect on stabbing the distributor with the marks at 6 and 12. The only thing that will be out of time is the distributor resulting in a no start with a lot of back firing from both the engine and the guy who stabbed his distributor wrong. Nothing will happen to the valves when the gears are aligned 6 and 12. Keep Rocking!!!

      very important comment. failure to listen will result in extreme frustration and possible cam damage . also this man forgot blue loctite on the cam gear bolts those things fall off and you are having more frustration and damage.

      I don't understand why guys need dots to figure out their ignition and can't just figure out tdc compression on cylinder 1. It's not rocket appliances.

    Cam should not be turned, the crank can be adjusted a little to make sure bottom is matched with top. But the engine should already be on top dead center by timing mark before take down this solves issues of being off 180 degrees for distributer. It is 12 o'clock on the crank versus 6 o' clock on the cam for match up.

      I just read otherwise. #1 Compression stroke TDC on my engine has the Cam at 12 o'clock and Crank at 12. I'm keeping it that way for the chain replacement.

    At time 1:14 you said put the key on O and go up 3 teeth. My question is ... Where you have the yellow paint , will all gears have a mark there? ( where you have the yellow paint) I see no mark there?
    The reason I'm asking is a long story. While my damper and stationary mark do line up at TDC , when I start the marks will not come down to time it, engine run good but can't
    time it with the light. At TDC rotor does line up to #1 wire. I have read many people had this problem but I found no fix.

  • @howtodoityourself6178
    @howtodoityourself6178 7 лет назад +2

    TDC on number1 cylinder is always when the mark on the crank
    timing gear is at the 12 o' clock position, and when you align the cam
    gear to the 6 o'clock position to the crank gear at 12 o'clock your
    valve timing is correct. But if you rotate the motor from that position,
    and your timing chain is on, you are off of TDC, until the two marks
    come together again. Most eng. work like that, but always check your
    manual on different engines!!!! Small block and Big block chevys are
    like the video.

      Dot to dot has always been 180deg out.. The reason You have to find compression stroke on #1 when installing distributer. People have laughed at me for yrs. (They were always 180 out) They still say I'm wrong.

    • @stevecollins115
      @stevecollins115 4 года назад

      @@stacyyealock6779not exactly. Depends on if 6 or 1 was tdc on compression when you removed your timing set. The dots having nothing to do with tdc compression, you're just putting the cam in time with the crank. You still have to find tdc compression on cylinder 1 when reassembling. Hence some people say 12 o'clock, some say 6.

    • @stacyyealock6779
      @stacyyealock6779 4 года назад +1

      @@stevecollins115 When the dots are at 6:00 on cam and 12:00 on crank , #6 is actually firing. Unless you have 7-2 swap cam. That's the reason for getting #1 on the compression stroke before installing distributor or it will be 180deg out. (I see what you mean though, just miss wording) Both are at TDC either way.

    • @stevecollins115
      @stevecollins115 4 года назад +1

      @@stacyyealock6779 it's all relative, say your crank and cam is 12. If you have to pull your cam out for whatever reason, you would do it in dot to dot correct? (Unless you're clever and wrote down position). But technically, it is not wrong to line up dot to dot. Your cam and crank are still in time, just your ignition isn't. I hope I'm not coming off snooty, I just like wrenching on cars haha

    Hi David - I have a motorhome with a bbc 454 engine. The engine has several oil leaks that I am going to repair which require removing the oil pan and replacing the timing chain (TC) cover seal. Some friends of mine have advised along with replacing the TC seal, to also replace the timing chain, the oil pump and the rear main seal. In searching for parts there are several sizes of chains it appears I need to take the old chain to the parts store and physically match it from there. Is this correct? If I am not mistaken I think I will need to to a timing adjustment with the distributor when I get everything reassembled.

      +mitchell b , spin it to make sure the timing isn't off and to check the tension after. Rotate the crankhaft by the bolt two complete belt or chain revolutions and see how the timing looks. You should probably replace the waterpump and crankshaft seal while you have the timing chain done.

      I assume it's a similar process. It is better to consult a repair book.

    Do you have to pull valve covers

    • @jonny5ive167

      That may help you find TDC, but if you are good you can find it just putting thumb on spark plug hole until it stops blowing air. You might have to rock the crank back an forth just a tiny bit to make sure.

    My timing chain has no marks on it like the o,a,and r there is nothing and I am lost

      Landon Mcgill it has to have one dot on it if it's stock,otherwise you couldn't put it in time...look at it closely...you'll see it...

      You have a 3 slot crank gear, can be confusing. The o is for normal timing as a stock dot would be, and if you can't check everything else (confusing to you if I tried to type it all out) Put the o on the keyway of the crank, the A and the R are for A-advancing the time 4deg and the R-retarding the timing 4deg. (Advancing makes the most torque and horsepower early, and retarding makes it later in power range.)

    I just put a new timing chain on a 5.7 Vortec - The car won't start - Back fires a little. How do I tell if I am 180 degrees out. I set the marks at 6 O'clock for the cam and the crank at 12 O'clock - Any youtubers have an answer - Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

      I don't know if this help but if the engine is positioned in a V the cam mark is suppose to be 6 o'clock and crank 12

    To me it seem everyone one of these how to. Start with removing old set or in this case installing new set. Not a thing about setting up the engeine it self in the right compression stock on #1 cyl. I see a few coment about having to drop the oil pan.. I never had to do that. An in all cases if you did lossen off oil pan bolts to lower oil pan. The whole new oil pan gasget an crank seals would have to be replace or you have oil leak.. not something you can do with engeine in The vehicle I would have to come out.

    If I'm doing a DOD delete on my Tahoe 5.3 and changed my timing chain, do I also need to change the sprockets?

    that's not on compression stroke. that's #6 cylinder compression. dot should be at 12.00 oclock for #1 compression stroke
