  • The coin collecting hobby in the United States grew tremendously in the mid 19th century when collectors saved Early American Copper Coins from destruction after the Large Cent and Half Cent was rendered obsolete by the emergence of the Small Cent.
More than 150 years later, collecting these beautiful copper coins remains a vital part of the American coin collecting landscape.
In this CoinWeek IQ, sponsored by NGC, we talk to EAC President Bill Eckberg about copper coins. Bill breaks it all down. Helping collectors go from their first Large Cent, to collecting by date, variety, and die state. We also cover the three most Important large cent collections of all time. His answer for #3 might surprise you...

I started off with some lower grade coppers in large cents and then half cents,
Later some of the earliest dates with some problems...
After I learned about EAC standards I started collecting some very nice specimens, later continued with nicer pieces..
Now I have a few very desirable early, middle, and some later date coppers!
Also have a couple of very neat errors.
Some are double struck early coppers,of center, in particular( 1831 15% off center 1c..VF 25 anacs)
    And a few amazing others..
Only collecting these that are problem free..

Interesting video, becoming a variety specialist is something I've always found very difficult. Perhaps I could do a collaboration with coinweek sometime.
    Best regards,

Not a fan of early copper except for the Indian head penny if that counts. Love my three cents though. So interesting that we needed a a coin just for stamps
