No way can I hope to recollect the names (I may even be in error about the source), but half a life time ago (I believe it was in Watt's The Way of Zen), there was a story of a master who was perturbed by the account of another master crying out when attacked by a tiger. I have been long disturbed by every aspect, really, of that anecdote. But hearing you share the ''advice'' about what is to be done when an elephant charges (and despite our having neither elephants nor tigers in Virginia!), I suddenly gained a bit of insight, and am no longer troubled by a ''Zen story'' that has weighed on my mind for many decades. Thank you.
Westside Smitty Hi, that sounds similar in some details to Master Hakuin who was disturbed by the story of a prior Zen master who cried out when set upon by robbers who murdered him. The master is said to have let out a shout that could be heard for miles. Hakuin came to one of his many awakenings thru this incident.
@@thezengateway8578 YES! Many thanks. That the the incident was an occasion for one of Master Hakuin's many awakenings, was just the ''impact'' sufficient to jog my memory enough to locate the recollection in Watts (p.135). Master Yen-t'ou was attacked by robbers. Memory is a tricky companion! Years pass, the particulars of the story got transformed, but my perturbation remained. Then I heard your discussion and gained some insight. Thank you for the response as insight goes MUCH better with an accurate account. Metta!
Which of these seven is the unruffled monk as the speaker just behind them talks for 31 minutes. One is thinking "Shut the f..k up." Second thinks "I almost silenced my mind if not for the running commentary, then the bloody siren goes off." Third thinks " I am gonna kung fu his ass in a minute." Forth thinks, " I am gonna let him feel the sound of one hand clapping." Fifth thinks " He will find my foot on the next level training of his own bull shortly. Sixth thinks " I might become an Hindi instead." Sadly its unseen but at 32 minutes they all turned around and shouted at the speaker "Mu leave."
YES YES full realization is ensured with that statement 4:33 on ,what is there to interpret , the wind laughs at you ! Rinzai kiy aye , how dare you comment on that monks behaviour i am, he was or is carried away , I am aware i am fully carried away by what ? IN SILENCE I Pound the ground with my Stick !
