What to look for in a training guru: 1.Self-deprecating felatio jokes 2.Obscure anime references 3.Phd who's jacked and an authority on science based training principles. (Yes in that order)
Oh man this is such an important topic for some people out there! While I grew up I learned to totally ignore my body, never rest, only be worth something if I was half dead from exhaustion, really hate lazy people and rest, and just not learn from mistakes. And then you add the magazines and certain popular folks out there yelling to always train hard, never take days off and so on...recipe for disaster. I needed A LOT of pain for several years, a bunch of setbacks, a burnout and a severe chronic disease to eventually start to work on myself, learn to listen to my body, appreciate rest and take care of myself. Now I'm sure this is more the exception than the rule but this information certainly needs to be more out there! Though, in this case I'm a big fan of investigating the mind, personality traits and such and work more from this angle as it offers a lot of potential for growth not only in terms of muscle gains. Love and strength, Thomas
A difficult aspect of taking time off or deloading, is fighting the addictive element of training. Taking time off can make people feel bored or it can even feel "wrong". I've noticed for some people, pulling back can be the hardest aspect of fitness. Having videos like this, hearing someone successful with fitness, reaffirm your inner monologue of "maybe I need to rest" helps a lot. Great video, thanks!
When I first saw your video on how fatigue works with training, and in conjunction with this video, it opened up a whole new world to training for me. Thank you for your words of knowledge!!!
Yo, I've bought the basic program, and I finished week 6. I made a ton of progression. Tired as F tho. Week 7 is going to be a de-load. Thank god...... Nice excel sheet. Can't wait for the holiday discount code so I can buy strength program. Peace
What I found works is overtrain for a few months, then take 1-2 weeks off, then come in and slam PRs. I also have a lot of success making PRs at the end of a 3-4 day fast when my adrenaline is through the roof.
Bro what you call overtrain is the accumulation and intensification phase and by the time your fatigue dissipatesc you have your realization phase (demonstrating strength that wasnt there due to fatigue)
So true..everyone wants a rocky sorta training sequence..but you also gonna power down. I just did a 70 lb db chest press by taking time off..like not db press for 2 weeks
Exile fitness is definitely my favorite gym in the world. FYI, they're adding another 30,000 sq feet to the place. Crazy to think they started as a tiny little 20x30 gym.
@@imsorrythankyouplease7613 Yes. He has a 6 week program 10 * 10. He did a test with the participants. 80 out of 87 got higher PBs, with an average of 6,8%. For 4 people had no change to PB and 3 got worse 96, 97 and 98% of their PBs.
Thanks for the gym recommendation, I'll consider if I ever visit the U, S and A. If you're ever in Vienna, go to 'Intelligent Strength'. They also like to dabble in a lot of old school gym equipments, even have their own (Well, they were made in collaboration with Gym80 and co-designed with the gym owner, but then they had a feud where Gym80 was backstabbing them.. oh well, long story). And have a blacksmith/engineer who makes custom stuff, repairing and stuff. Nice guy.
I was one of the few that was serious about training but didn’t train hard enough bc I was oblivious…started training hard, and I’ve been PR’ing every week for 3 months now!
Thanks for the video Mike. A personal note- when I take a full week or more off I'm more likely to experience DOMS when returning, particularly to hard sessions. I'm able to avoid that by doing a light session (around 50% weight or 50% reps for one set) the day before getting back in.
Thanks for information I am training powerlifting 9 years hit one rep max lifts best was Raw 250 squat 190 bench 280 deadlift now I cant surpass these lifts do deload low and back to the competition
What’s kind of shocking is that someone as seasoned and as smart as Piccolo/Kami didn’t understand this principle. Piccolo/Kami wanted Goku and Gohan to go back into the time chamber
First Mike says follow DBZ and rest like Goku & Gohan. Then Mike says it's impossible to ascend BEYOND one's limits even though Goku was all about going beyond & then further beyond. So which one is it Mike?!!!
I train hard, harder than 99% of people in your typical (non hardcore) gyms, in my opinion. I've found that when I train 4 days a week I'm about 15% stronger and gain muscle a ton faster than when I train moderate-hard 6 days a week.
In the high endurance sports there's good evidence that 270 days is a hard limit macro cycle. Bike racers, all of them, are off their bikes for at least a month every year and the guy who taught me to race told me that the guy who taught him how to race told him, "if your butt doesn't jiggle going across railroad tracks in April you'll be sick in June." Is there any research in resistance training that suggests there's a hard limit to the macro cycle?
I'm 53 and switched up ppl 6 days straight a couple weeks ago to 3 on 1 off 3 on 1 off and I swear my arms seem like they've grown more than the last 6 months.
For my recovery even 3-1-3-1 is pushing it. Heavy deadlifting I cannot do twice a week, which is a shame since it's an amazing exercise for me, including its variations. But for my mental health 3-1-3-1 is great so sticking with it for now rather than training only 4x a week or so.
I worked out for years never intentionally taking breaks and saw minimal progress. I incorporated deloads and I haven’t experienced a plateau since. The biggest thing I tell anyone I’m my life looking to excercise is to take extended rest occasionally.
I swear the text in the slides is getting smaller and smaller by week! I need new glasses! Team no days off would be the first to fall off of all divisions.
14:40 - I wonder if that’s not the reason so many coaches have at least a persona of being “my way of the highway” assholes. They’ve spent years having bros come to them for advice and then push back based on nothing more than “idunno, taking a day off sounds kinda lame.”
I workout 6/week. I know I need to deload but it’s so psychological to me. I’m afraid of losing gains but for sure feel like I’ve plateaued. Btw, I’m from Baltimore…
For two weeks Substitute with cluster sets Rest less in between sets Do 75% of exertion at same weight and less reps Substitute with similar exercises then return to the main lift after two weeks Replace a weight training day with hills or steps and calisthenics
Should I sit through 20 minutes of Mike?🙄. If I knew for sure he was going to take his shirt off I would push through the boredom of waiting for the PowerPoint slide to change 😀.
His knowledge of Dragonball is always so fucking great to witness. Thank you doctor Mike. Goku and Gohan active resting. 1000/10
I just noticed the shirt too
@@curlean-x4443 yeah bro that’s a classic lmao

You’re like a school teacher with the powerpoints. Except I actually listen to you! Lol
And the kind of teacher who sends the powerpoint, not the one where you have to take a photo of each screenshot
Haha thank you! - Dr. Mike

Nah, he doesnt extend enough for full ROM. Most reps dont even count!! I bet hes got a nagging injury to the eyelids 🤣 jk
its tourettes homie
And high volume as wel
He even squeezes at the top lol

Ugh me too man. Doesn't that culture of "grind only" suck?! Especially for those of us who have more trouble backing off than going hard. - Dr. Mike
Dr. Mike should do stand up, I am dying laughing, while learning about strength plateaus!

Lift relatively light weights and progress them block to block is the secret to strength
Swedish World champion gold medalist in bench press Josef Eriksson uses often light weight and high reps in blocks, as you say.
@@Harrythehun Does he progress his strength during those periods? Or is he setting up his strength blocks where he actually makes strength gains?
Block to block? What does that mean?
