    I love how they're referencing the whole "ancient cultures didn't have a word for blue" phenomenon. I've never seen it used as a metaphor, despite how perfect that is 😊
    (even if it's a linguistic phenomenon and not anything to do with rods and cones)

    • @DoveJS
      @DoveJS 4 года назад +35

      Right! Every culture/language has a pattern of starting with Light/White and Dark/Black. Then they add in Red as the third color in the vast majority of cases. It's not that they couldn't see it of course; they simply didn't need more colors in everyday language up until they added them in. I like this song and I get that it's a metaphor but I kind of wish they'd framed it differently. Love the references and the overall idea though. :)

    • @friend_trilobot
      @friend_trilobot 4 года назад +32

      @@DoveJS yeah. I was a bit saddened when I saw how it was framed, but I do think it's a good metaphor.
      I know there was a really popular episode of radio lab on NPR that randomly (and wildly innaccurately) theorized that writers like homer may have called the sea "wine red" due to not having as many rods or cones and not seeing some shades of blue. So that may be a factor. But even if that weren't, I knew people in college familiar with the theory from anthropology or linguistics who seemed to think you couldn't tell the difference between two colors without having a word for it and I couldn't help but think from listening to them that they were clearly misunderstanding the difference between how you perceive shades and tints in the color spectrum and how you categorize those shades and tints in your language. I've been told that Russian has a separate core vocabulary color word for light blue and treats that as it's own color - doesnt mean we can't tell the difference between light and dark blue in English. Not to mention, there's the oft overlooked fact that English has a core vocabulary word for "light red" not found in many languages: pink.
      (My degree is in linguistics, btw)

    • @Toporshik
      @Toporshik 4 года назад +14

      @@friend_trilobot there is also an ambivalent relationship between names and the ability to recognize the existence of an object. To some degree, you won't be able to "see" an object in terms of assigning any value or meaning to it. Here in Russian, we don't have any articles. That means that in casual everyday language we don't usually categorize objects as being definite or indefinite. We don't see this information as meaningful. We don't "see" it. But if confusion arises, we can definitely provide this information through different means.

    interpreting this through a classics viewpoint: the greek poet Homer used the epithet "the wine-dark sea" to describe the ocean. Since then there has been a lot of academics and scientists who have given different explanations for why Homer would choose such a phrase, because "duh, the ocean is blue". There is a widely accepted theory that the ancient greeks had no word for blue/did not hold the cultural concept of the colour blue. The song "Lapis lazuli" is referencing this idea: hence why "the sky looked white", and "Rayleigh" here refers to the optical phenomenon that makes the sky appear blue most of the time to our eyes. I think broadly the lyrics are about gaining new perception and seeing what was hidden before, ie. being able to perceive "blue" (unlike the greeks).
    HOWEVER I also have to add my $0.02: 1) some classicists don't believe this myth about ancient greeks and blue. one persuasive argument is that the greeks in their poetry are concerned with the LUMINOSITY of substances more than the actual HUE. So actually, the sea is "wine-dark", because think about how seawater looks in a b&w photo: dark but not opaque, a lot like a glass of wine, actually. 2)my own argument is that people are dumb and the sea is just wine-dark sometimes. Sure, the sea is sort of blue on sunny days, but think about sunsets and sunrises: they do turn the sea purplish red sometimes. The world isn't a kid's crayon drawing; sometimes the sea just isn't blue.
    (this is way too in detail but i mean the whole song is about perception and seeing what's there/what isn't there)

      I actually didn’t know this! Cool information! I agree that the song is definitely about finding something/new meaning you couldn’t see before. I heard it for the first time during the wildfires, so the sky was literally white from smoke and the water like wine, so this song is always going to remind me of seeing the first blue skies when the smoke clears.

    • @Hakajin
      @Hakajin 4 года назад +20

      Lol, "too much detail" is never enough with this band! I swear I could write a book on The Anemoi Cycle! Interesting analysis, by the way! Blue seems to be associated with... Well, to start out with, it's a very rare color in nature. It's sometimes used in literature as a metaphor for peace, like in Lois Lowry's "Gathering Blue" (it may be a YA novel, but it's really complex!). Also, the ancient Egyptians used lapis lazuli around their eyes because they thought it improved their vision, which has that association with clarity and truth.

    I believe Lapis Lazuli is about discovery of further truth, completing the puzzle of your vision, finding what was missing, but I think also, it is fundamentally about communicating the completion to an audience who is alien to that idea, and the struggle to translate. With this new knowledge, you have to regress your language to explain it to those who lack the revelation. All of this done so elegantly with our inability to communicate to true experience of color through the facet of our individual vision of it, as well as the barriers of the language we use to describe them.

    [Lyrics]
    I don’t mean to speak so collectively,
    I know I don’t make it easy to even wanna hear it;
    what can I say, what can I say, what can I say?
    'cause the more I recite it
    the more you wanna fight it,
    the more my language is sounding fabricated
    But if there’s one thing I know,
    it’s either the growing is slow
    or it cuts to the bone,
    moving too quickly.
    So I’ll keep half of my words in my mouth,
    let the syllables fall out
    at a steady trickling;
    I’ll be your roof caving in.
    You don’t know what you don’t know yet!
    Yeah, I go on forgetting it.
    Don’t you go on forgetting it, too!
    _(Don’t you go on forgetting it!)_
    I don’t mean to speak so intrusively;
    I know I don’t make it easy
    to even wanna see it.
    Nothing old, nothing new.
    Well, if there’s two things I know,
    it’s that the sky looked white and the water like wine when I first met you.
    But somewhere along the line
    Rayleigh scattered across my eye
    and I found her blue!
    Yeah, I found her blue!
    *You don’t know what you don’t know yet!*
    *Yeah, I go on forgetting it!*
    *_Don’t you go on forgetting it, too!_*
    *_(Don’t you go on forgetting i-i-i-it!)_*
    *_(Don't you go on forgetting i-i-i-it!)_*
    I must have found a new cone in my eye.
    What other Lapis Lazuli was hiding
    behind my color blindness?
    What did I miss, what did I miss, what did I miss...

    • @dudeman1983
      @dudeman1983 4 года назад +12

      This song is about someone who has found their new truth. As they've gone wandering through the cold winter, their questions find new answers, which become new thinking, and a new color, and new way of seeing, enters their world. They keep trying to tell people about what they have seen, to little avail.
      And they begin to wonder, gazing at Lapis Lazuli they had long rejected as common rock,
      what else they might have missed without this beautiful new sight.

      Definitely. The opening lines of "the more I recite it the more you wanna fight it, the more my language is sound and fabrication" is a common feeling that a lot of religious people have about trying to spread the word of one's faith.
      The later line about change either happening too slow or cutting to the bone too quickly is another great description of how it's hard to find the right balance between ignoring one's faith and not doing anything to make the world a better place out of shyness, and being so desperate to spread the word that one ends up driving people away in one's efforts to convince them.
      But the beautiful conclusion they reach about their own faith at the end is honesty perfect. Probably the most underrated song lyrically I've ever heard.

    Does anybody know who/what Rayleigh is in this song? It's capitalized in the lyrics, so I thought it may be the name of somebody who means a lot Tyler and/or Maggie.

    • @pigeonpower42
      @pigeonpower42 4 года назад +10

      I think it refers to Rayleigh scattering: the scattering of light by particles that have a radius less the wavelength of the light. It's why the sky's blue. Sorry if that wasn't a very good explaination, I'm tired.

    in the context of the rest of the EPs, this song sounds to me like someone trying to encourage people close to them to open up against their closeminded/conservative beliefs. cold (the song before this in the tracklist) references the main hook of Passerine, which is one of the more direct songs about the conflict that can come from acknowledging the harmful things one has done in name of ideas they thought were correct. but instead of just wallowing in the grief that can come from feeling like one has lost the community you shared with other people who thought the same way, the singer has decided to stop simply "philosophizing" and is now taking action, trying to be the catalyst for that same change in other people, instead of giving up on them. even when they don't wanna hear it and even when you still feel like you have no idea what the hell you're talking about
    these EPs are so cool. favorite band for sure.

    Man, all these people going on about it being a reference to finding further truth or literally about color blindness...
    Pretty sure that's overcomplicating things.
    From what I've gathered this song is about depression, or rather, recovery from it.
    When you're depressed you don't notice it but colors are naturally muted, everything taking on a darker and dreary tone, something that is impossible to notice until you're finally free of it, gaining self esteem or getting better.
    When you get that moment of happiness and self esteem it's almost like the whole world goes vibrant and there's so many colors you've never seen before.
    Especially the whole ending part with "you don't know what you don't know yet" being how a lot of people with depression assume things are just gonna keep being bad but only in that state of happiness do they realize that things can be better, and a lot of times when you relapse into depression you forget this happiness, so the song is telling you not to forget.
    Especially the beautiful part at the end "what other lapis lazuli was hiding behind my color blindness" being something I've wondered before of how much I've missed due to my depression.
    It's a beautiful and inspiring message that always uplifts me every time I listen to it.
    Everybody who talks of being disappointed about the metaphor not being good just weren't seeing the correct metaphor.
    This song is beautiful.

    I don’t mean to speak so collectively
    I know I don’t make it easy
    to even wanna hear it
    What can I say, what can I say, what can I say
    the more I recite
    the more you wanna fight it
    the more my language is sounding fabricated
    if there’s one thing I know
    it’s either the growing is slow
    or it cuts to the bone
    moving too quickly
    so I’ll keep half of my words in my mouth
    let the syllables fall out
    at a steady trickling
    I’ll be your roof caving in
    You don’t know what you don’t know yet
    yeah, I go on forgetting it
    don’t you go on forgetting it, too
    don’t you go on forgetting it
    I don’t meant to speak so intrusively
    I know I don’t make it easy
    to even wanna see it
    nothing old, nothing new
    well if there’s two things i know
    it’s that the sky looked white and the water like wine
    when I first met you
    but somewhere along the line
    Rayleigh scattered across my eye
    and I found her blue
    Yeah, I found her blue
    I must have found a new cone in my eye
    what other lapis lazuli was hiding
    behind my color blindness
    what did I miss, what did I miss, what did I miss
