I started a character a few years back that is doing the 100% Journey. Got everything I could find. I know I've missed stuff, which is why I'm watching this video; but I'm going to be waiting until the update to actually finish them up.
I've even planned for a survival character that's going to be going after all the music boxes after the update. This tip was invaluable. Thank you! :D

1300 hours in terraria steam edition. 200 hours in tmodloader. ~1500 hours in terraria pirated version before i got a job and could buy games on steam. ... i did not know about a lot of these items. maybe i should build a new museum world. i built one ~2014 with giant biome terrariums, big rooms that were event themed, but back then there was a fraction of the current items.

@sunblade704 ah ok yeah that makes sense. yeah, was fun to build. everything in there was brought from my other worlds, and from my main characters. and some friends helped completed it, so it had a lot of signs with the name of the one donating the item. was cool to walk through. sadly i lost the map when switching pc.

@oscarbarnes2130 He did specify in one of his Terraria item collection runs that he would most likely use Journey Mode, but that was before his recent tiny world playthrough where he showed just how powerful Journey + Shimmer can be, which may have changed his mind.
Unfortunately it is November and he lives in Canada, so he will likely be in hibernation until February or March as most Canadians do.

as someone who has somewhat memorized most of Minecraft's recipes I respect anyone who has memorized any of the terraria crafting recipes

@dnomyar101 I memorized most of the Calamity Mod+ Calamity's Addon Mods (Calamity Overhaul/WOTG/HOTOG/Infernum Mode), honestly not that hard compared to remembering Minecraft recipes since all you got a remember is what stuff to get, not what shape to put it in or how it's arranged.

@freshlymemed5680 Recipe Browser is a must have tho, can't live without it. Though yeah, the recipes aren't that bad, it's stuff like The Arc of the Cosmos which can really be annoying to try and remember every detail.
I already KNEW that the elf vanity set was gonna be a pain in the ass, I had to speedrun the elf pants from a fresh save file for a random item speedrun, took me 4 hours to get to the point where I could start farming the event and another 1.75 hours to be able to actually get the elf pants, not even the whole set

you can craft the journeys end music box from a few other music boxes
unlike the closed void bag or the shell phone, the carrot is actually researchable in journey mode, but requires a few workarounds
Unironically a hard challenge it takes forever!!! My little brother did it one time through an entire summer break

Tip for this for people that want to try it themselves the spawn increase is able to be added onto battle potions and water candles

If you’re doing quest fish in non journey worlds and have the patience for it you can collect as many quest fish you want by fishing one up then throwing it into a piggy bank or safe then off loading into a chest when you’re satisfied

36:50 I was trying to fish for prismite post moon lord in my hallowed dessert lake. I caught 7 lady of the lake paintings in one sonar potion. During that time, I only got 2 prismite. Didn't know that painting was rare

I think the reason you took so long on the enchanted sword grind is because you titled all your worlds with 3 digits. By assuming the max amount of worlds would be 999 you imply to the game that you are willing to search 999 worlds. Should’ve gone with only putting 2 digits so the game knows that it has no right to take any more than 99 worlds at absolute maximum.

Congrats, this is a crazy accomplishment! I decided to do this several years ago...I'm at about 85-90% now and most of the items I need are from grinding and world gen rng (I did take a long break in the middle, which is why it's been so long). Ultimate pain

A tip for anyone wanting to do this themselves:
Do _not_ wait until the endgame to get basically every item you missed along the way like Gungnir did. Speed be damned, you _will_ burn out quickly if you frontload that much high-difficulty stuff at the very end.
Take your time, and pace out everything as you go along.
Wow doing this with shimmer makes so many road blocks I had to deal with much easier. Like the gold sea horses. Still haven’t finished those….

There's actually a third way to get the terragrim. You can use the rubblemaker to place a sword shrine, and use that to repeatedly place and break it until you get a terragrim. Unlike the getfixedboi princess method, you can do this on any world.
According to the official wiki it can't. But the wiki has been wrong before so... might have to try it.
@andrewluo3792 I tested this ingame and either I'm insanely unlucky or the wiki is right.
I just assumed it would work without reading into it too much because I didn't see why they wouldn't give you an easier way to get a stupidly rare item without a secret seed.
When I first started playing terraria, the arkhailis was the first item that I ever got from the enchanted sword shrine, always held a special place in my heart, your video is how I learned the terraprim replaced its spot in the sword shrine and that the terraprim even exists

I was legitimately thinking of this just a few hours ago, and now I see this a short time later.
As somebody who has done this last year, the gold critter trick would've saved me HOURS and I'm so mad that I didn't know about it beforehand.
Also:
- I immediately clocked the dungeon furniture foreshadowing lol, why arent they craftable
- I forget which item it was but I got rolled so bad with the angler quests, it must've taken me over 200 to get everything (actually maybe it was a fish idk)
- I made the same prehardmode crate mistake
- Infinite potions are so goated
- I HATE THE GOLD MOUSE even after creating a super optimized farm, it took me like 5 hours and 3000+ mice to get the three i needed to research
- For the furniture, instead of being efficient and crafting everything at once, I put every furniture item in a chest and crafted each new set as soon as the item became available
- The Lunar Flare needs more appreciation. It's not the highest damage ML drop, but it became my main weapon as my playthrough went on. The fact that you can click anywhere on screen, do a ton of damage, and light up dark areas makes it the ultimate utility weapon (ironically a better starfury replacement than the star wrath).
- 28:30 "A one in four is a whole lot better than a one in ten" is what you would THINK would happen. IT TOOK ME LIKE 20 CULTISTS TO GET THE MASTER MODE PET AAAAA
- The permanant lantern night strat is genius, I wish I thought of that
- Watching you throw items and pick them back up instead of putting then directly in your inventory awakened some muscle memory that I totally forgot about
- Luckily I knew about music boxes and got all of them basically as soon as the music became available
- Fruit farming was really annoying, I could've made a bigger tree farm but I still got pretty unlucky
- The underworld decorative banners are such a funny mechanic, I wonder how many non-journey mode players even know about it
- I looked up seeds for the living tree minecarts, I checked every tree while world hopping but just had terrible luck
- I found Waldo in my main world (actually I think there were multiple), one of the few things that I actually had good luck with
- I used TEdit to look for my last few paintings and dungeon furniture, still took me like 20 worlds to get everything
- I had 88 hours on my character in the end
- When the video ended I ALMOST clicked one of the videos that popped up and lost this entire comment
um i didn't mean for this comment to be so big, I guess I had a lot of repressed trauma that I needed to get out. if anybody else wants to do this, just understand that it WILL take a really long time even if you know what you're doing, and it WILL get really repetitive in the end so be ready for that.

I can sooo relate to rng frustration... I didn't 100% Terraria, but a lot of other games. And every single time, I needed to find / catch / gather something rng related (or with really low appearance percentage), I suffered so much. I seem to have zero luck with things like this. So I can feel the pain through my screen, bud.

I did this myself, it took me about 200 hours, not many RUclipsrs do this because of the huge time commitment, so this is really cool!

Edit 3: I used flower boots for the golden grasshopper, but your strat seemed to work quite very well

Edit 6: I loved getting the gentleman's beard variants as well, it's such an interesting concept, I wish they'd use it elsewhere
Edit 7: For the terragrim, I just found a world seed that had a sword shrine, then reloaded the same seed every time, your luck was absolutely abysmal omg
Edit 8: I was lucky enough to find waldo on my main world, but it took me about 15 worlds to find the bioluminescence and goblins playing poker paintings...

I could not be bothered to grind endlessly for the terragrim so I literally just bought it from the princess on a celebrationmk10 world :3
Completionist in me wanted to attempt it myself, but thankfully I've lazy'ed myself out of it.
Instead I've just created a "forever" character of sorts.
I just complete all sorts of challenges, class-restricted playthroughs and secret seeds with him.
The "forever" part of it being - after beating the Moon Lord, I go through my chests and research everything that hasn't been researched yet, then I reset this character's stats (and remove permanent items) with mods, setting them back to 100 health and 20 mana, and then create a new world.
I've beaten all the secret seeds with him so far, I think he has more than 300 hours on him (I'm currently taking a break, so I don't remember the exact number).
I'm pretty sure I'm still ways off from having everything researched, but at least i absolutely didn't feel the grind of it.
I stopped playing because I wanted to try mods with him, but I'm not sure if removing mods while having items from them researched will corrupt the character save, and I'm pretty sure some mods have unique mechanics tied to characters (permanent shimmer items, rage/adrenaline, stars above girl-companion thingy and so on), so instead of just testing it all out, I just decided to finally take a break, I probably won't risk it tho.

You finished something I was trying to do once Journey mode came out. You are truly a Legend
33:44 Terraria youtubers for some reason really struggle with drop rates for rare items if there's multiple of them. It's 1 in 300 if it's calculated like "1 in 200 to drop anything, then random out of these three", but if it's independent it should be somwhere around 1 in 300 to 1 in 400 for the whole suit, it's complicated to calculate, and each one raises the expected rate up to back 1 in 200 for the last one.
If you have a 1 in 200 chance to drop anything, and then a 1 in 3 chance for each of 3 different items, then the expected number of tries to get the full set is 1100 - 200 tries for the first, 300 for the second, and 600 for the third.
For three independent items each with a 1 in 200 drop rate, assuming I've not made any errors in calculation, the expected number of drops required to get a full set is around 366 (precise value is 17448479400/47640999). The calculation is more tedious than difficult - you have 4 possible states (none dropped, one dropped, two dropped, three dropped) with known transition probabilities, so you can just write out some simple equations and solve:
E0 = 199^3/200^3 * (1+E0) + 3*199^2/200^3 * (1+E1) + 3*199/200^3 * (1+E2) + 1/200^3 * (1+E3)
E1 = 199^2/200^2 * (1+E1) + 2*199/200^2 * (1+E2) + 1/200^2 * (1+E3)
E2 = 199/200 * (1+E2) + 1/200 * (1+E3)
E3 = 0
i wanted to do this run back when journey was introduced, but i said "naw i'm not moving my mouse that much"
but after some updates you can shift click or whatever to research, so i'll try to do it too

on a COMPLETELY UNRELATED NOTE, if any terraria dev reads this, please add one or more of the following i beg of you:
- an ingame research checklist that unlocks for every available item at your current stage of progression (pre boss, pre hm, pre hm boss, pre plantera, endgame)
- an achievement for 100%ing your creative mode inventory
- an encumbering stone setting that only lets things in that you havent researched yet
There definitely SHOULD NOT be an achievement. That sounds insane

@creep_skull the 200 fishing quest and world purity ones are painful enough, and a 100% item one would basically require large amounts of world hopping for things like Waldo and the ladybug minecart.
