Another example where "как" is translated as "what" is "What do you think," when there are implied options rather than a general enquiry. So for example, "What do you think, is it true?" is translated as "Как вы думаете, это правда?"
I generally see "зачем" translated as "what for," to help distinguish it from "почему." "Why did you do this?" vs. "What did you do this for?". Similarly, you can translate "какой" as "which" instead of "what" to help differentiate it ("Какой твой любимый цвет?" - "Which is your favorite color?").

There is a word in old English which exactly means КУДА- and that is wither, but it is archaic today. It is in the children's rythm for example, " Goosey goosey gander, WHITHER shall I wander? Upstairs and downstairs And in my lady's chamber" but people got lazy and wither is not used any more. For откуда there is the English word WHENCE which is almost archaic but still ocassionally to be heard in legal jargon "whence we conclude..."
Certainly there is a way in English of saying зачемY and that is What.....for? For example "What did you do that for?" So English does distinguish between why and what for, the latter being exactly зачемY. There is also a now archaic word which translates well but is not used any more: wherefore
