This is so true. My coach also always gives us a plan. He indeed always starts which focus on your breathing and we'll work from there😁 You're the best Ando!

Well... By the point that you have a rear choke applied... you already screwed up, you're at fate's mercy... But you're totally right, it makes people feel stupid and incompetent if you tell them "Don't feel the wrong feelings, it's easy" 🙄
Thank you! Finally, someone has put that feeling into words! I can’t explain how much this helps. I usually get the “relax” which immediately takes the anxiety I already feel and dumps gasoline on it. It’s like telling a possible assailant “calm down.” Ugh. I think instructors mean well when they say it, but you’re right. It’s the end goal, not the steps to get there. I’ll remember the plan mentality next time.
Totally agree with you on this! Ugggh knee injury. It's been 7 months since my surgery. I'm still in recovery and not cleared to train. Just do small things here and there.
All good wishes for your recovering! Kneeinjuries are absolute hell... I had the good luck to slip off täsurgery because training my knees carefully and more often bettered it, but I really feel with you. What worked for me does not necessary for you, but maybe you want to try it: I decided to do Capoeira again and trained very carefully to go down into a position which looks pretty much like a deep lunge. I did it slowly and with the help of a chair to hold onto, but it got better and better after days and weeks. Still have to take care, don't want the injury back by any means, but I play the Capoeira without too much thinking about it and it feels fine. Doing the moves that I was going to do in the very martial art strengthened the knees in just the right way. Probably I learned to listen better to my body as well. Good luck 👊
I know it’s frustrating, but you’re doing the right thing. There is still so much we can train when we’re not 100%. This lockdown has proven that to me for sure! Keep fighting! 👊🏼

Guys part 1, 2 and 3 of our interview on our podcast called ChatCOMBAT with Sensei Ando are up on my channel. Feel free to watch them, it was a great talk with an awesome martial artist!😁
Great Advice, Sensei. For Me being relaxed means being in control of My thoughts and My actions. This doesn't mean I'm restricting myself but when I'm rage fighting, I'm doing it while I'm in control so whenever I'm about to do something stupid I can stop myself. Instead of freaking out and thinking about what could go wrong or being worried, I think about analyzing the situation and thinking about what can be done and then doing it. Being relaxed for Me means having a relaxed mind and not a relaxed body. A relaxed mind focuses more on the present ( instead of being anxious about the future or regretting the past ), thus being more aware about the Present and capable of thinking and taking action! So My question is, does having a relaxed mind help?
Relaxation definitely applies to the mind and body, yes. Hopefully, we can train for each to help the other when tension appears. Thank you for the comment!
If people in a small town stare at me I try to shut them out, concentrate on the airflow, the trees, the passing cars, I imagine they are not human, but statues and it makes for a far more relaxed walk.
I think this is a very contextual thing. There is for instance the new guy, who is scared to even roll for example. He needs a plan more. But some people such a non-relax situation is extremely temporary. And "relax you got this" works when the person isn't that far gone. I've had this work for me rolling, where I was about to tap because I hit a gassed out wall. "Relax" was all I needed to get out of that momentary head space. But I do agree a lot of people need more in a lot of situations.
I guess a kickboxer would beat a boxer in a "scheduled" fight, however a boxer punches better than a kickboxer and in most self defense scenarios knowing how to punch and how to dodge an attack is better than knowing how to throw a roundhouse kick for example. So personally I would start with boxing and then I would move to muay thai (like kickboxing but better lol )
Technically, this would be incorrect from the point of view of internal styles, cause for TaiChi relaxation is a type of muscle work, so telling a student to relax in fact IS a very specific advice ;)
Quite true, but even then I think sensei Ando's point stands. Telling a relatively new student to relax is unhelpful without instruction on the specific type of relaxation. Most new students lose their structure when trying to relax. (I know I did.)
If you are a positive, humble, caring, helpful, encouraging, and selfless sensei youre students will always be relaxed even during tests. If your students arent relaxed, then maybe there should be some reflection on why they aren't. Is the environment they are training in promoting a positive and relaxing environment or is it stressful and discouraging? Something to think about.
Hello there! I just found your chanel a couple of days ago and i ve got to realise i m realy dealing with an inspiring man right here.I have a question you might give me a tip on:what path should i chose in life if i have a lot of pasions, but none of them i can say about are ment to be my life 100%,at least not right now(wing chun, screenwriting, acting, motivating in general and some others) What do you think about that? What do you do if you are more than 1 thing?Or maybe i m not brave enough to asume something esential.
Hey, Andrei! If you can’t find a way to combine your passions, then I would recommend cutting one or two away for a while to see if you really miss them! It might also help to think about which of your passions has gotten the most encouragement from the people around you. It’s always nice when people appreciate your work!
Hey Sensei Ando! I need to ask you a question. What's your opinion on Tae Kwon Do, Wing Chun, Tiger+Crane+Viper+Mantis+Monkey style Kung Fu, and shootfighting?(Because I'm trying get the skill I need to spare with my big brother who studied MMA, Judo, Wrestling and Boxing).
@@kadenpopp16 What's the question? It's all fighting... just with different priorities. All that matters is training hard and honestly to make what you do work. Styles don't fight... people do! :)
@@kadenpopp16 Hey there Kaden. In the past I trained intensively tiger style for about 8 years. From my point of view it is a great style with a lots of benefits, but there are some difficult parts upon it, too. Some of the pros are the hard traditional training (with lots of horsestances and other deep positions to strengthen the lower body), which definitely will toughen you, if you go for it in a serious way. From the hard training you will also benefit in a psychological way, if you set your goals in a reasonable way and long to achieve them (one more pullup, one more minute horsestance, even if you fight with pain in your already shaking and burning muscles, etc.). Herein lies also a contra imho, cause you have to stick to reasonable training to not get hurt while doing this kind of training. If you are seriously hurt you can't hardly train at all. The second big thing is, that this traditional style with lots of freaky trainingmethods is still a style which is seldom pressuretested. I stoped to train mainly tigerstyle because tigerstyle alone does not open your view to martial arts enough, thatfor I started to reach for all kinds of martial arts to learn from all and, to say it with Bruce Lee's words, to keep what works for me. You brother seems to train in 'typical' combatsport orientated martial arts and, no matter how much I love tigerstyle, I dare to say with just tigerstyle and only beginning to train right now you do not stand a chance against him. My advice would be to try to train tigerstyle and find out if it is what YOU want, not what lets you roll with your brother in a certain way. To learn more and give yourself a chance to develop a tigerstyle that works for YOU, you should think about doing some training in judo or jiu jitsu (to learn to grapple and to learn to use the tiger grips in a better way/pressuretest them) and boxing (to learn how to position yourself; you won't learn that enough in tigerstyle. Also it will improve your way of striking, so you will get better at throwing your tigerclaw as well, if you combine what you learn). If you want to use the tigerclaw successfully, you will have to open your mind to other ways of martial arts as well and not limit yourself in thinking in such strict borders as of a style. As Ando already told you: Styles don't fight, people do. Hope that helped you a bit; good luck finding your (martial arts) way, just enjoy the journey and learn not only with your body but with your head and heart as well.
@@AndoMierzwa Thanks, "Seek the best teacher, not the best style."-Sensei Ando, for some reason, I had to hear "It's about YOU, not style." from you, (even though I've heard it many times), for it to feel like it's fully processed in my brain.
Basic NLP-- the mind can only think of ONE thing at a time-- so- CHANGE focus.... which is why I recommend SOFT EYES if you're about to be attacked.. you have to put your attention on the focus of your eyes-to SOFTEN the focus- and allow peripheral visiion to work well... OR- if you can't do anything else- just think of something ELSE.. THAT is one reason for focusig PAST the board to the area below and past-- NOT ON IT-- if you focus ON the board- you'll focus on the pain of hitting it.. CHANGE the focus. In NLP , you can reframe-- or swish effect- in a confrontation- CHANGE THE AREA of your gaze.. if you're focused on getting beaten up-- stop looking at the big tough muscle guy coming at you- and focus- LOOSELY on the sternum on his chest and SOUND-- you'll pick up movement you DON"T see- and see stuff you never would have- and after a little practice- the fight SLOWS DOWN- you actually start to feel things happening in slow motion.. and can "sense" things coming MUCH easier.. and the relax will come automatically!! REFRAME every negative into an OPPORTUNITY!!!
Good day Ando-Sensei! So You are telling that being relaxed is the result of being in control of the situation and not the other way around !? Ssshhhoking! ;-) However this is an advice I hear a lot in my discipline and, as Chael of fame would say, let me offer You this: In some cases, literally relaxing Your muscles while performing a technique is an actual plan because as long as you are tense, You end up by using brute force which only works if You have an overwhelming strength advantage (which BTW can frequently be observed when people not familiar with our discipline decide to pressure test some of our techniques and come to conclusion that they are ineffective). Consequently once the rest of the puzzle pieces are there, "relax (as in let go the muscular tension) instead of struggling" may become the right advice to give.
Oh, don’t get me wrong - relaxation is essential for free movement. But under stress, it’s easy to lock up and not be able to let go. That’s where good instruction can help. Thanks for always thinking!😁👍🏼
Can you make a solo sparr and training video with absolutely no equipments (not even a pair of shoes) and not enough space at all an obiously no partner. Please dont forget how to take punches. In same video. Hope you will reply! ❤️Love from 🇳🇵🇳🇵Nepal.
@@AndoMierzwa the problem is rainy season just ended and cold is coming soon no parks nearby and the grounds around home are farmed. There is no timing for rain and i have a preety small compared to houses in us. No frontyard or backyard. And no street dogs all over not allowing to run or jump on the streets.
People really dont know what relaxation is that is why we have this ignorant video.Relaxation is the feeling of emptiness, void, and space. When you have emptiness, void, and space you have room to put something. This is what forms the connection between what you perceive to be you what you perceive to be other than you. It's in our language.(Hes full of himself. Hes open to the idea. )Once you have this connection things are easier to harmonize with and control.Lao Tzu indicated that it goes beyond words but this is something to meditate and reflect on. If we jump on the earth you get so far off the ground. The same effort of jump on the moon you'll go a lot higher. Why ? Because the force of gravity on the moon is less. What is gravity?Gravity is the amount if tension in the atmosphere. When we diminish the amount of tension in our bodies by relaxing all if our movements become empowered.
Ando Meirzwa is one of the few teachers of Martial Arts that consistently says things that I can find no fault in. Rates way up high on my list of great teachers. Thank you sharing.
A little MA reverse engineering tip, when sparring make your opponent feel tense. Excellent topic and advise, stay well and don't sweat the small stuff, relax 😎
Glad you’re active on YT again. I’ve missed your videos. My instructor often tells me “relax dude!” but OTOH he says “you’re not breathing!” so I guess it’s a wash haha.
The one I tell people who are stressed out, afraid, angry, or otherwise tense, I tell them to simply breath, showing an exaggerated deep breath for them to relate to. There is actually a process that has an acronym regarding how body, self talk, and thought are able to alter or reinforce each other. If you are a Star Wars fan, Darth Vader is actually an excellent example given his posturing with regards to being an effective public speaker. Given my name (Luke from Star Wars and Schwarz from Space Balls), I kind of hate all the hype, but it is not the movies themselves. I tell people that I don't mind jokes if they are original, but none are. The only original joke I had in the past 10 years was when somebody offered me blue milk. One of the more tragic and extreme versions of bad advice occurs when a person is suicidal. Telling them that whatever is causing the situation is not worth it. It immediately tells the suicidal person that you do not care about what they are going through and that they will not actually listen to them. It's one of the worst things you can say to them.
Tears for fears is right, instead of saying relax they said shout.... In an abstract sense, the act of shouting is very powerfull. Ironically, in a literal sense, not so much...
I'm well known for saying martial arts is problem solving, relax is not solving the problem, what's causing the panic/fear/anxiety/tension??? That's what needs to be worked on. Solve the problem not the effects. Thanks for another great video Sensei 🙏🙏 time to have a cup of tea, some pie and relax 😂
I've a few thoughts on this if you don't mind. 1) When I tell myself to stay relaxed, it does work sometimes. However, when others tell me the same thing, it usually does nothing for me. It's more about how a person *approaches* me that helps me relax. 2) Everything is interconnected. The way we work, our love relationship, our friendships, our family life, our worries, our diet and sleeping habits, every aspect of our life has an influence on all the others. 3) Knowing a thing or two about psychology, i.e. being able to read people, to regulate your own emotions, to overcome your fears, to build relationships, and much more can really help you in martial arts. 4) Handling frustration. It's OK to not succeed right away. I'm still a beginner in martial arts and my side kick kind of sucks. A lazy slap with my hand probably has more power than my side kick. It's frustrating, yes. But what am I going to do with that feeling? That is the crux of the matter in my opinion. To be able to accept your limitations yet still keep on training and training and not give up, that has been an important lesson that I've taught myself or rather, that life has taught me.
Very good. I heard about a bandleader coaching his bandmates to keep tension. To keep that exitement with fokus on happy performance. To have the heat flowing by good breathing and propper willing and aggression did help me a lot. Its a kind of balance I guess. Of course in a fight of dead or alive its strange to give any advice that can work for shure to make someone survive. As You say, keep on fighting for a happy life is always good I guess. Even for the next life.
"Tell them to take a breath... or eventually to bake a cake" 😂 Just listened to your advice while baking a bread, but I think that should do as well. With a martial arts background of around 26 years I honestly must say that I highly appreciate your videos, because you cover a part of the martial arts which often seems almost completely overseen by martial artists today. I myself get much more from a single video of yours than from a lot of the technique-talk - that's what training is there for 🤔
You would THINK this is common sense for teachers of ANYTHING, but it is not. The job of the coach, instructor, teacher is to teach what to do AND HOW to do it. I see a lot...way too much, actually...of "do this, do that, don't do this other thing" and almost ZERO "here's how to do the right things." So kudos to you, Ando, for pointing it out. My personal pet peeve is all the self-defense instructors (including firearms) telling their students to "develop situational awareness" or "live in condition yellow," but who NEVER...and I mean n...e...v...e...r...tell anyone HOW to improve their situational awareness, what situational awareness actually IS (biologically and intellectually), etc. Just substitute "PAY ATTENTION!" for your example of "relax," and it's the same thing.
Ando- this is amazing advice!! As a parent, I'm going to stop telling my kids to relax about their worries. They need a plan! Embarrassed that I've been talking for so long to them like that!!! Thank you!!
Hello Sensei Ando, I need to know for my younger sister she has been wanting to do martial arts for the longest time now I was wondering what type of martial art you think is right for her! Some things about her are that she is 10 years old, she isn't shy at all, and she really wants to compete in competitions and what nots!
I don’t know your sister or what schools you have to choose from in your area, Joy, so it’s impossible to know what she will want to do. Just try anything to see how it goes. You can always change later.
I know I'm not Ando. Technically you should train everyday, But training is not only physical. Resting allows for your torn muscles.to repair and become stronger. Your mind also needs training to learn to be tranquil and not panic if you take a hit or to not succumb to anger. So learn to meditate or whatever you feel you need to do to feel calm. Even if not pumping iron, hitting bags, or doing strenuous workouts you can also stretch consistently to stay loose and agile. Basically you can always train as long as it promotes balance and growth in your training. Burning the candle at both ends is not good. Find ways to stay sharp basically.
It all depends on how you train and what you can handle. But I do agree with Jorge that there’s always something you can do every day. Make it your lifestyle, not just an activity. 💪🏼
Sir, I have placed a lot of thought on breathing properly while training. I have been instructed and it helps to place my hands on top of my head and suck air in through my nose and even hold it for that split second and then exhale through my mouth. Does anyone else do this to get a quicker recovery? Lifting my hands on top of my head makes sense to get the most free chest capacity for lung expansion....but I’m no doctor so I may be a victim of an urban myth. Anyone else do this? If not why? Since I forced myself to get these first few breaths (6-7) in that way I think I do recover a little faster between rounds or bootcamp sets. It’s counter intuitive because you want to open your mouth and such air in so fast that to limit that to your nose feels crazy at first. Again any thoughts on this? Thank you for your hard work!!
When I run sprints, I sometimes put my hands on my head, too, so I’d say it definitely helps expand your lung capacity. The alternative is putting your hands on your knees… and puking. Thanks for the comment!😁
Hi Don, I am doing this as well since high school. Back then I learned that this is supposed to help to open up your breathing in just the way you described it. Don't know the english term for it but I am talking about this annoying pain you sometimes feel stinging in your sides after you (literally) ran out of oxygen. I think this form of breathing works very well to solve this matter within just a few moments. 👍
@@dondasher58 Yeah, as I read your reply I I remember that I also had to get used to it at first. In the beginning it felt kind of strange if you were totally out of breath and tried to controll the way of breathing instead of mere trying to suck in as much air as possible 😅 But it is worth the effort to get used to that method, especially because a probable other outcome is what Sensei Ando pointed out in his comment above 😬 This is just my personal impression, but I feel like it works even better, if I do not stand still while breathing this way and instead keep walking. Good luck with your training and keep on breathing 👊
Oh yes you always get that cornerman shouting out relax in the middle of an MMA fight and I always thought to myself you relax when you’re at home on the sofa not in a fight 🤣 but I do also understand what they’re trying to get it
I mostly agree with this, like 99.9% Lol. you're not wrong about just saying relax and not making a plan. From my understanding on the phrase to tell a student to relax comes from showing them how to move and strike quickly, particularly by allowing the limb to move like a whip in Pi Gua or Tong Pi movements. But yes only saying to relax and not show them how to relax is problematic, if anything it makes them more tense, Lol. Great Video, Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the comment, sir! I think we agree... the word "relax" is vague on its own. We have to define what it means and what action it leads to. Thanks for the comment!
A lot depends on the meaning people associate with a word. Telling someone to relax might mean something very different to two different people. Thank you for the comment!👍🏼
Ando Mierzwa I do hear you. To your point , It also presupposes tension. Maybe I’ll try influencing by talking about a time I was in that situation and focused on my breathing and began to focus in on my internal feelings of fluidity and speed.

Fantastic advice for martial arts and life. "Do something!" 👏🏽👏🏽 Thank you Sensei Ando, and I look forward to your interview with my friend Les Z Bubka.
Hi Ando Sensei, I'm having a problem with people's attitude towards me. They always tend to stare at me and easily become aggressive, try to make my life miserable, like kicking me out of parking spots, not turning attention to what I say, do any sort of nasty tricks they can think of. I'm not very sure why, but I guess it's because I look young and am quite white and flimsy looking. I'm not weak, but I do look thin. And I guess they also envy me for certain things. Its like in school, the tiny kid gets bullied, just because he's tiny, this time in real life though, and the bullying isn't beating but making you feel miserable.... Do you have some advice of what I can do so that I don't have to fight so often, I'm really not a violent person and I also don't want to piss them off even more?
Laugh, laughter is the beginning of melting the ice burg or putting out a brush fire, they continue agree what they are saying/doing maybe is right, but that's not you or you don't do that or you've corrected that. They continue!!! Make a judgment about right here! This is lude, nasty, pressure bigotry * very important * your more wrong now than me. A FELONY WRONG !!

He came after me only a few minutes after I stopped the car. So he's been waiting to see who comes out of the car and whether he (thinks) he can beat him.

Free from judgment. Enjoy your walk!
Fair enough! Being told to relax can certainly be reassuring by letting you know that all is not lost. Thank you for the comment!
Hahaaa so true.. I've been guilty. Thanks Ando
Thank you for the comment!
Which is best for street fight(self defence) boxing or kick boxing please suggest
It all depends on you.

People carry their own stress with or without me. But I hope to help!
That’s 100 questions.
Alright. How about Tiger style Kung Fu against Boxing?
As Ando already told you:
Styles don't fight, people do.

Ssshhhoking! ;-)
However this is an advice I hear a lot in my discipline and, as Chael of fame would say, let me offer You this:
In some cases, literally relaxing Your muscles while performing a technique is an actual plan because as long as you are tense, You end up by using brute force which only works if You have an overwhelming strength advantage (which BTW can frequently be observed when people not familiar with our discipline decide to pressure test some of our techniques and come to conclusion that they are ineffective).

You are a legend to em Sensei Ando. Would love to meet up with you to listen to all your tips but i live in Italy! :(
The one I tell people who are stressed out, afraid, angry, or otherwise tense, I tell them to simply breath, showing an exaggerated deep breath for them to relate to.
No jokes from me! 😄

Sorry I missed this comment earlier! Thank you, Sensei!
Preach it! I have been saying this for a long time. Thank you Sensei
You are wise, Sensei! 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing your wisdom, sir! 🙏🏻
With a martial arts background of around 26 years I honestly must say that I highly appreciate your videos, because you cover a part of the martial arts which often seems almost completely overseen by martial artists today.
I myself get much more from a single video of yours than from a lot of the technique-talk - that's what training is there for 🤔
That comment means a lot to me. I try to focus on concepts that have helped me make ALL techniques more effective. Thanks for noticing!🙏🏻
“Develop situational awareness”. HA! 😄 That’s like saying, “Succeed in everything you do.” Good luck!

Sensei I’m new training kickboxing can I training everyday from Monday to Friday a kickboxing for one hour and half a day? Any advice please thank you
I know I'm not Ando.
wonderful to teahing to be brave
Sir,
I have placed a lot of thought on breathing properly while training.
Ando Mierzwa Hahahaha yes Sir that’s the one move I hope to avoid 😊
Hi Don,
I am doing this as well since high school. 👍
Jack Mak Morn the more I do it the better it seems to help me recover quicker. 👍🏼 even during my high intensity low impact training away from mma.
@@dondasher58 Yeah, as I read your reply I I remember that I also had to get used to it at first. In the beginning it felt kind of strange if you were totally out of breath and tried to controll the way of breathing instead of mere trying to suck in as much air as possible 😅
But it is worth the effort to get used to that method, especially because a probable other outcome is what Sensei Ando pointed out in his comment above 😬
This is just my personal impression, but I feel like it works even better, if I do not stand still while breathing this way and instead keep walking.
Good luck with your training and keep on breathing 👊

HA! 😄 Exactly! Bad coaching is easy!
