      Come on, the word idea in English STILL has three syllables. Look it up. It is the shortening of the word identification, ID, that is pronounced idee.

    Yes and the division between the political Right (Royalists) and the political Center (Democrats , loyal to Venizelos) still looms in the background to this day in Greece.
    The continuation of this division, became obvious with the political events of 1965, between George Papandreou and the last King of Greece Constantine, creating the political chaos that led to the military coup of 1967 in Greece.
    Although there is political stability in Greece after 1974 and Greece is no longer a Kingdom, the ghost of the 1917 division is still present in the background, with about 30% of the population are still in favor of Royalism, even if they accept the current Presidential system.

    Ultimately Venizelos was right. He made a dream come true . The great idea became a reality in just a decade And this is why he is considered to be one of the best politicians Greece ever had . Despite the fact that he orchestrated many coups during his time after the greko-turkish war

    • @CiggyMan
      @CiggyMan Год назад +2

      If by the 'Great Idea becoming a reality' you mean his role in allowing Greece to expand into former European Ottoman lands from 1910 to 1918 then I suppose, but the escapade in Anatolia to seize Izmit and the surrounding regions were only temporary and more of a military occupation. Not to mention the outright faliure to diplomatically or militarily occupy Istanbul.

    • @Jovan_Jarkarane
      @Jovan_Jarkarane Год назад +4

      @@CiggyMan He made all the necessary military and economical preparations to make Greece ready to fight in the upcoming wars and get the lands that according to "The Great Idea " ,(which was a fundamental idea for the Greek state at the time) belonged to Greece and where under ottoman occupation. In fact that's the only reason he wanted Greece to get involved in WW1 , for the rewards after the war. Also the failure in Asian Mirror campaign was mainly on the Royalist who replaced all the experienced officers with their own inexperienced ones and brought back King Konstantin who was hated by the allies and continued the war.
      Also, getting Smyrna was already considered to be a diplomatical victory considering that the Allies were about to give it to the Italians.

    Thanks for this program. I think it explains why the monarchy in Greece was never hugely popular, due to her foreign-ness and also her muddling in political and foreign affairs too often and always out of touch with the Greek population. This of course cumulated in the abolition of the monarchy in the 60s/70s without the Greek population shedding much tears.

    The greatness of today's Greece is mostly due to Germany, which aimed to neutralize Russia's possible allies in the Balkans, primarily Bulgaria and Serbia. Due to the absence of overseas colonies, Germany wanted its place in the Balkans, seeing it as an opportunity for its expansionist goals. The creation of Albania is one of the projects, like Greece, which expanded at the expense of the Slavic peoples, who mostly lived in the territory of Macedonia, Thessaly and Epirus. About a million Serbs, Macedonians and Bulgarians were expelled from the north of today's Greece. Almost as many were brought from Turkey to replace the entire Slavic population. The famous Greek Zorba was not Greek at all and met his end as a refugee in Yugoslavia.
