For a moment I thoughy today was Saturday. Coz both you and the cold war channel dropped videos today. Nevertheless good to see more content about Greece.
Very accurate and nice coverage on this topic Stefan. The Great Schism was evident inside the Greek society until 1974, when our country abolished monarchy for the 3rd time.
Another wonderful and informative historical coverage video shared by an excellent ( History Hustle) channel...introduced by Sir Stefan...video about 3rd victory ✌️ of Greece 🇬🇷 during WW1...besides Anton powers. Thank you Sir Stefan for sharing
Yes and the division between the political Right (Royalists) and the political Center (Democrats , loyal to Venizelos) still looms in the background to this day in Greece. The continuation of this division, became obvious with the political events of 1965, between George Papandreou and the last King of Greece Constantine, creating the political chaos that led to the military coup of 1967 in Greece. Although there is political stability in Greece after 1974 and Greece is no longer a Kingdom, the ghost of the 1917 division is still present in the background, with about 30% of the population are still in favor of Royalism, even if they accept the current Presidential system.
Ultimately Venizelos was right. He made a dream come true . The great idea became a reality in just a decade And this is why he is considered to be one of the best politicians Greece ever had . Despite the fact that he orchestrated many coups during his time after the greko-turkish war
If by the 'Great Idea becoming a reality' you mean his role in allowing Greece to expand into former European Ottoman lands from 1910 to 1918 then I suppose, but the escapade in Anatolia to seize Izmit and the surrounding regions were only temporary and more of a military occupation. Not to mention the outright faliure to diplomatically or militarily occupy Istanbul.
@@CiggyMan He made all the necessary military and economical preparations to make Greece ready to fight in the upcoming wars and get the lands that according to "The Great Idea " ,(which was a fundamental idea for the Greek state at the time) belonged to Greece and where under ottoman occupation. In fact that's the only reason he wanted Greece to get involved in WW1 , for the rewards after the war. Also the failure in Asian Mirror campaign was mainly on the Royalist who replaced all the experienced officers with their own inexperienced ones and brought back King Konstantin who was hated by the allies and continued the war. Also, getting Smyrna was already considered to be a diplomatical victory considering that the Allies were about to give it to the Italians.
Thanks! I have always wanted to visit Greece as it is so beautiful and its history is incredible. We in the west owe Greecse so much from a cultural standpoint!
It didn't survive for long. It was backed by Italy. They supported the Italians and the Nazis. Very few people followed it. ELAS managed to deal with them quickly. Alciviades Diamantis the leader fled to Romania after the War but he was caught there for treason, or something I think.
That was a good little video. What do you say we start our own short lived transcontinental We'll? We'll have it last for 15 minutes, so we can go down in history as the shortest lived state ever? Take it easy...
Thanks for this program. I think it explains why the monarchy in Greece was never hugely popular, due to her foreign-ness and also her muddling in political and foreign affairs too often and always out of touch with the Greek population. This of course cumulated in the abolition of the monarchy in the 60s/70s without the Greek population shedding much tears.

The greatness of today's Greece is mostly due to Germany, which aimed to neutralize Russia's possible allies in the Balkans, primarily Bulgaria and Serbia. Due to the absence of overseas colonies, Germany wanted its place in the Balkans, seeing it as an opportunity for its expansionist goals. The creation of Albania is one of the projects, like Greece, which expanded at the expense of the Slavic peoples, who mostly lived in the territory of Macedonia, Thessaly and Epirus. About a million Serbs, Macedonians and Bulgarians were expelled from the north of today's Greece. Almost as many were brought from Turkey to replace the entire Slavic population. The famous Greek Zorba was not Greek at all and met his end as a refugee in Yugoslavia.

Come on, the word idea in English STILL has three syllables. Look it up. It is the shortening of the word identification, ID, that is pronounced idee.

Greece was another country that was promised much for entering WW1, but received little.
Rumania and Poland done well out of WW1
Greece received 2/3rds of Thrace and a sizeable foothold in Anatolia, they just lost most of those gains to the Turks in the following years
Greece's history post 1453 is SUPER underrated. Thank you for this video

In my opinion the kings of Greece were of the main reasons for the catastrophies that were been occurred since 1830.
I understand.

A video about Aromanian Principality of the Pindus during WW2, maybe?
