A brilliant intellectual who was among the most eloquent, skilled, and articulate communicators of my lifetime. I was a bit distressed when he said so emphatically: “If I had a pill that would reduce my age by 25 years, I wouldn’t take it. I’m tired of life, I’m utterly prepared to stop living on”. I have never heard one of my idols share such intimate feelings with the public.

DID NOT SOLOMON OF THE BIBLE WHO HAD EVERYTHING SAY HE HATED LIFE ?
AFTER YOU GET A CERTAIN AGE YOU COME TO REALIZE THAT IT IS NOT RICHES THAT FULFILLS LIFE BUT
REFLECTING ON THE LIFE ONE HAS LIVED AND HOW THEY HAVE TREATED OTHERS IS THE ONLY THING THAT TRULY MATTERS IN THE END.
BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HAVE THIS UNDERSTANDING.

I believe he is very brave to admit "I'm tired of life". That is such a astounding statement, yet I believe he is speaking for many others who simply don't say those words because we are taught that we must always fight for 1 more day/month/year. Why can't we logically say "OK, I'm done here". One reason is there is huge money in convincing people they must hang on.

In order for humans to get along peacefully, the only way is through the aspiration of liberal ideals. Conservative ideals seek to keep specific people below others. Nature and the universe won't allow this, the universe only seeks equilibrium, the human species live for nothing else but equity (look it up... It's not the same as equality). He didn't want to live in that kind of world of liberal ideals, so good riddance. If you're not willing to acknowledge the true humanity of people unlike you (not the untrue image created in his mind of people unlike him), then you don't deserve this life. Quit your whining and play well with others so you won't be miserable all your life.

Yet the fact that apparently you misunderstood her meaning in addressing them & the issue is supposed to be a profound justification of your condemnation? How can you back up your judgement of her point as utterly selfish? Go for it. If you cannot, than you have judged another person as unworthy based on a worthless presumption, and so as an unjust man.
You are choosing to be the accuser, yet in truth you have no power.

Their content were supportive of the contentions of not only McCarthy but Whittaker Chambers, Elizabeth Bentley, Hoover, and others.

An unpleasant man, mostly. On his tv show he had a habit of going straight to ad hominem insinuations when he was losing the debate. And when losing he had a way of leaning forward from his chair into the faces of people, in a crouch of aggression, even with women. A huge ego, but glad to hear he had a capacity for regret and seemed to have mellowed with age.

    • @Arareemote

The show was never intended to be an interview or debate program, and he stood by this claim all throughout his life. The show was always (Except in the original pitch to Buckley) intented to be an exchange of ideas.
When Al Gore once said to him during the break "I know much more about the TVA than you do" to which Mr. Buckley replied "Your only responsibility here is to prove you know more about the TVA than I do." And he states quite frankly in the opening pages of his book on Firing Line that he was almost always at a disadvantage.
I don't disagree that he was unpleasant however. Mr. Vidal and Mr. Buckley were very alike, much more than either of them could really ever bear. The key differences being Buckley though half as knowledgeable as Gore was a lot more personable and could act amiability and civility with great ease. Which made him much more approachable and presentable- while Gore instead embraced his identity.

Buckley's show Firing Line was boring and that was because I was a kid in the 1980s. The only thing that I liked was the theme song. It was only that I've matured enough to admire his conservative arguments in a charming, witful manner. He was never a loudmouth like the shock jocks @ fox news or MSNBC. He made PBS special....Now he's gone...forever...just like Louis Rukeyser, Mr. Rogers, Shari Lewis, Alistair Cooke, Justin Wilson, Julia Child, etc. Is Public TV dying I wonder?

Uncle: I can't think of a specific example. I am not one of those who cries wolf.
What is this 'popular mythology' you refer to?
The only problem I see is that the politicians in the gov't. seemed more concerned with conquering the political landscape.
I think that both Liberalism and Conservatism have credibility, albeit in different areas. Both are necessary, in my opinion, to run the country successufully. Also, it would be dangerous to have either one ideology completely control.

Are you saying that you believe it is better to have lower standards so as not to fail, than to reach for perfection and so fail so much more spectacularly by contrast?
If so I think you're wrong. Politicians are representatives, like preachers, and so should all the more have high ideals and willingess to try and live up to them.

I have listened to Ann Coulter, she does not merit my respect. She has a right to her opinions, but it is how she presents them which I find so distasteful. Buckley himself was told by his father to speak his views more moderately.
