Out of all the surfing and paddling related videos I've seen here on youtube, and this includes guys surfing Mavericks, Jaws, Nazare, etc , guys rafting gnarly rivers, guys kayaking down huge waterfalls, guys trying to surf the waves created when an iceberg falls apart and other nutty things like that, it's this video that I appreciate the most. There's no talking, no boasting, no false bravado, no music, no drone shots, no huge production values, it's just a regular guy charging on a victory-at-sea-day with a freakin go pro strapped to his head. And not just that, he eats it a couple of times but keeps it together. All of us regular Joe's, who try to get in the water as frequently as we can, can relate to this

Walk of shame? I don't think so! Only a few know what it's like in those conditions. Just to go out and come back took great strength and skill. And you probably would've been OK on a 3.0 too! Good for you for even attempting it; there was no-one else out was there? Even more kudos for posting a video of yourself getting pasted, that shows humility and everyone else gets to see what it's really like when it's howling. Thanks for sharing!

heh, i was the only one. i had a friend there, but he did not go out. actually it looked much more manageable as i was rigging. wind came up several knots as i was walking to the water. it was raining before i went out and while i was coming in. you can see even the wet sand blowing down the beach.

I'm in awe of the cool, the balls, and the technique it took to make this video. The 1:15 waterstart segment is now my official introduction to windsurfing for anyone who says "it looks so graceful and peaceful, skimming across the water". I personally cherish the challenges, although none this large to date, far more than the postcard shots. Thanks Kevin.

Excellent footage and so realistic. everybody shows the perfect days etc but this took steel balls. the weather always looks very tame in 2D especially the waves.
I used to do this kind of session but couldn't handle it now. always had people stopping to look even in bad weather.
well done and may there be many many more days like this (and sunny ones) for you.
    Cheers

Badass. For those that don't know, Ocean Beach in San Francisco in the winter even on a windless day is sketchy with big waves breaking hard and fast. This is super human.

This video shows how it is many times! Specially for us with no sponsors 😅 you put almost all energy just to get the shit together and get your as out on the water, being so tired already before even get on the board, but because all the effort you been giving to that run you just gonna do that run, there are no options even tho you know already since you lifted your gear down to the water that you're so sooo overpowered! And when you're finally out there strugelling to just stay up you just close your brain for a while and when you wake up you just wanna get back in one piece to the beach without getting hurt 😂 but hey.. that feeling when you're in the car on the way to home and you and your equipment are ok.. that makes it all worth it, cause you where out there that day 👊 and for you who thought it was boring to watch him walking out over that long beach.. just click on another fucking video with a superperfect Hookipavideo or something than 😁 cheers

Respect for doing it and more so for showing the footage. If you have been out in conditions like this you know how much fun it can be but at the same time quite scary! You can drive 3 hrs each way for 15 minutes of exhilaration but you feel so alive it’s always worth it. Respect also for knowing to call it a day after 1 run. When you get blown around like a crisp packet just trying to water start

I remember days like these (when I was in my late twenties). Just getting the boards off the roof rack doubled my heart rate. Fully sheeted out and still accelerating in the gusts, arms burning but too scared to hook into the harness lines. When I look back now I just think... what if I had knocked myself unconscious.

Dude, hold your head HIGH! That was real windsurfing! It's not the smooth, gliding over water you see in the pro videos... it's salty, water up your nose, water over your head, terror while you try to get your body out of the water on a waterstart before a shark notices you. You're a monster to go out in those conditions regardless of how long you're upright. Truly elite.

Windsurfing in the storm is for experts and men who have guts, nice video, remember the same kind of experience in Normandy years ago the sea was all white, you could only go straight and blow up in the biggest waves, you realize there is point where the ocean and the wind are stronger than you, but the thrill is incredible.

there is an inner and outer sand bar... the tide was low, so i had to walk out to right in front of the inner bar. the water here is very shallow, so you really have to start right in front of where the wave is breaking and time the launch. my timing was ok the first time but i got spun into the wind in the air and the sail got backwinded and it was game over. i count about three seconds between when I hop on my board to when i'm already in the air :-D

  • @tonezzzzzzzz
    @tonezzzzzzzz 7 лет назад

For those who thinks what's the point and where's the fun. The fun is in the doing itself, taking a challenge realizing more and more as you walk down the beach that you'll be beaten up by the mother nature's power for sure but stop thinking more about it and force yourself to go on. As you crashed and struggle again and again, you'll be wondering to yourself what I'm I doing this for? You want to run back to the beach for safety but you don't want any regret so you keep pushing for more, until you feel you can deal with the regret of not going for more then you stop.
Then comes the best part, the after session when you're back in warm place with cold beer in your hand laughing while shit talking about it with your friends knowing you'll remember this session for the remaining of your life ;-)
The camera makes it looks relatively easier than real life though. I was struggling enough in 40kts a few times with even smaller waves, don't want to imaging how it'd be with 50+kts ;-)

I have been out similar to that in storm. Know how quick body energy disappears and how small function corridor there is between controll and struggle. My problems where tail walk and spin out, things which are much associated with trimming parameters and pure material aspects. On the other hand locking at the professionals and even semi pros one can't understand how they manage........

this is not typical for this spot. usual wind direction at Ocean Beach is NW or WNW (onshore to side on). this was SE storm wind. We do get good conditions here in SF... there are 200+ windy days here depending on what gear you have. My most used sail size is 4.4 with an 85-93l freestyle board (I'm 185lbs). We did have a storm day here at Ocean Beach just two days ago, which was really fun. Not so crazy this time. My friend made a video vimeo.com/207029215

Thank you for your answer. Hello from Spain. Is there something side, side-off with nice waves nearby? I'm not looking for extreme high winds, here we have nuclear winds if you like it, see Pozo or Tarifa, I do prefer to play with waves and strong winds tend to destroy them. I'm planning a trip to SF, by the way :)

Very brave and in perfect physical conditions! But in such hard conditions, with so much over power, it would be better not to go so much out in the ocean, but only just 100 meters, and concentrating on surfing the waves close to the beach, maybe even jumping. Too dangerous and not worth it outside. But often we can't resist to the pleasure of planing full power, so we go and go and go, then we fall like him at 8:00 and the real struggle starts. Would be much easier and less stressing trying to water start at 100m from the coast rather than in the middle of the ocean

why so many dislikes, we see at least the real content of surfing in such crazy weather, not a mixed tape where Pro make tricks with removed failures

Somebody got alittle scared. You actually handled that well. Why didn't you do a second run. You can't seriously think you weren't going to struggle. All those issues were forescene. You didn't get whooped in anyway. Sure you struggled. 💡 The wind was putting you back on the beach. Sure is a crazy feeling though when you go straight into launch without a second to think.
    😯Twice 😯.
    That other guy.
"Fuckin rain, where is the wind. not windy enough huh". Umm Ummm. "Maybe an 8 you THINK".
