One thing I like about S. Korea is their transportation prices are very reasonable. For over 2 hours on the train for $22 is cheap. I rode the ktx from Seoul to Busan in 2012 and it was great. Clean, fast and very smooth ride.
the railways are connected, but the railways in North Korea are poorly managed, I'm not sure if trains can go higher than 30km/h without risking an accident... Oh well it's South Korea I'm pretty sure they can fix the entire North Korean railway in mere months.
I have lived in SK for three years and it's a great country. I've been to the border twice. Trains can be hit and miss from the most basic Mugunghwa to the modern and fast KTX high speed trains. I love the fact that they are so affordable compared to Western European fares. I lived about an hour from Seoul, so would use the cheapest trains. If going to Busan or anywhere far on the high speed lines then I'd use the high speed lines
I was in South Korea last year and did the Seoul-Busan KTX journey. At the time it never dawned on me to do the DMZ tour but after seeing this I will certainly do it when I return to Seoul next year. Korea is a fascinating country isn't it, I had a great time.
Wow this is beyond crazy. I knew south korea was superior when it came to rail transport compared to europe but the first class experience seems years ahead. And the price is cheaper than second class in a lot of places in europe even with similar distances. I'm absolutely amazed.
I lived in S Korea from 2001 to late 2016 and took the KTX numerous times from Seoul to Daegu on the original main line. Always fast and efficient and so much more relaxing than driving highway 1. I like the look of the new train sets but surprised by 1st class being 2+2 as the originals are 2+1.
2+2 is not natural for 1st class, but if the fare is reasonable I think it does not matter, because we use 1's class just due to the shortage of the available seat not for the more comfortable travel because normal(2nd?) class also very good enough for a travel within several hours. I think Korea’s railway condition really restricted the speed, even though the trains are capable of higher speed. Trains need to share railway with metro in Seoul. The speed isn’t very high outside Seoul too.
Korail, which operates ktx and rail lines, has a cumulative deficit of about $12 billion. Hello from South Korea. I had never taken this train since my usual route has original KTX train. I never expected my country is introduced on this channel! Enjoyed a lot!
@@shanjida8353 Simply calculating, it is 110km/h as Cheongnyangni-Andong distance is 220km. The train runs 260km(the maximum speed) only a few minutes. The strength of KTX-eum is that power is distributed to all carts and it accelerates better than other trains. So it focuses more on reaching higher speed faster because each station locates very tight.
Dining cars have become almost nonexistent in Korail because the trips have become much shorter with faster trains. It only takes around 3 hours to the farthest cities from Seoul with the bullet train KTX.
Thank you for introducing South Korea high-speed train KTX-Eum. KTX-이음(KTX-EUM) is pronounced ii-eum. 5:00 These doors are designed for use on low and high platforms. 16:23 5:30 This electric locomotive is the 8200 series, and based on the German BR152 electric locomotive.
What a coincidence. Not only did the same DMZ tour last July but my first train journey was from Cheongnyangni -Yangpyeong on one of the new KTX trains. Did subsequent journeys from Yangpyeong -Gangneung on the new section via Pyeongchang (incredible engineering, which allowed the train to get up to proper speed) and also Seoul-Gyeongju on the older TGV style train. This vlog brought back happy memories (including the Starfield Shopping Mall tower in the distance - minute 10:15). New trains are very impressive and certainly an improvement on the older style TGV trains. Great wifi on board and the wireless phone chargers are such a good design. Many thanks for this - really enjoyed seeing it all again. 🇰🇷👍
The expansive glass train canopies are what I like most about European train stations. All balloon train sheds in USA were destroyed many many moons ago.
Took several S. Korean trains back in the early and mid 70's. Very different from today. At that time they were mostly patterned after American trains of that era.
well... they are kind of a American "colony" directly after the War... most of the economic aid came from US anyways, plus the famous _Budae Jjigae_ from "born" from the US base food surpluses...
I'm very happy to know that you've satisfied with the trip with KTX - EUM as South Korean! My favorite train in South Korea is KTX-EUM because of it's cool design and identity! And I think KTX-EUM is more appropriate to Korean Raiload Infra than KTX-1 and KTX-Sancheon(산천). Unfortunately, I've not used this fantastic highspeed train, I hope to get on this train in my winter vacation! Thank you for your great review about KTX - EUM before my first boarding. I'm looking forward to another review about the Korean raiload journey! :D
Great trip. Starting the trip with sneak peek of DMZ is something unique. That's train is modern comparing to the TGV based, but it's surprising me when they use same seating configuration between First and Second Class with the difference is legroom and in seat amenities. Like Simply Railways, really appreciate you managed well about video recording around many random people as in Eastern Asia, it's very strict about privacy. Anyway can't wait for another trip report in South Korea, especially how to going to DMZ, trying Mugunghwa, or trying other transportation as well.
Its actually called business class i think, lower than 1st class but higher than standard class, and 20% cheaper The 320kph, 8 car trains that will be introduced also has these instead of first class, and it makes sense for this because travel times are at most 2 hours and 40 minutes, and you don't really need that much comfort, while switching to business class would allow for more passenger capacity and therefore more revenue The short travel time is also why there arent any catering cars anymore too.
@@BrakeCoach Ahh I see, I was thinking about that. European train class configuration is very different than Asian countries. They make business class higher than First class. In my country, Business Class is located between Executive/First Class and Economy Class (but currently, some of Business Class replace by Premium Economy).
I'm with you about underground stations. I generally like when they're ground-level and the roads have to go over or under them. How fascinating is it that this train has WIRELESS charging?!?!?!?!
The Korean trains are doing away with dining carts due to high labor cost. It just doesn't make sense to hire a person and pay upward of $3000.00 USD and other benefit package cost additional 1000. Also, trains in Korea don't take that long. Water dispensing is all you need. And many departing train stations already have good tasting food options available.
@@NonstopEurotrip, if it's not needed, it's not needed; just buy breakfast, lunch or dinner at the station and eat on the train (make sure the food _isn't_ stinky, though [ruclips.net/video/IMfH0INMU90/видео.html]); you'll be quite fine.
I get what you mean about the dingy under-concrete platforms at Seoul, although they don't look as bad as the Stygian pit that is the platforms at Birmingham New Street for which I hold a special hatred.
@@PrograError Thanks for the info. That is making sense, hwever, the solution they came up with was not for the customer's safety first. It seems that it is just a cost-wise idea. On a rainy day, it would be scary to see that old lady, carrying luggage, stepping down.
@@khh8776 well... most of the stations seems to be covered so rain would be less of an issue... also asia values elders slightly better than westerners so most would help, plus there's staff

Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I was fortunate to have spent 9 months working in Korea in 1999. Loved the people. Loved the food. Once a week, I flew between Seoul and Yosu on the southern tip of the peninsula in Business Class. There was less legroom than in the Second Class on this train! Have you had a chance to take the subway in Seoul during rush hour? They use push men, like you see in Japan. I once missed my exit by three stops because I literally couldn't move, it was so crowded. But then, street traffic is even worse. It once took me 2 1/2 hours in a taxi to go 6 km. I eventually just got out and walked.
Reminded me of my '83 'bullet' train trip from Tokyo to Kyoto. We clocked at 160 kph. I was young and spent my time in the bar car drinking Saki and conversing with a television writer on his way to visit his parents.
It's a good video, but I can't help but point out two things. 1. KTX-EUM is not based on TGV. KTX-EUM, the power distributed joint (multiple power type) was developed by Korea's own technology is different from KTX-1 , the power concentration (Push-Pull type) developed based on the technology of TGV Réseau. 2. The train in this video has a maximum speed of 260 km/h. It is classified as a semi-high-speed train,,In Korea. High-speed train ,common KTX, has a speed of more than 300 km/h. Thank you for your interest in KTX system.
Wonder how many phones are forgotten innthose chargers....? That Seoul stn looks alright.... largely due to ceiling height IMO. Q: was the DMZ tour an organized group affair or solo...?
I dont know why stations in SK mostly use full platform doors? Sorry to say but those doors may be OK for subway but if the station is at ground it looks unmatched.
The coaches look pretty sterile and over lit. I'm impressed by the smooth ride, but I want to experience the ride quality at 300kmh maximum speed. I can't decide whether to explore Spain, Italy or Japan next? Where ever I go it will be full speed ahead because I won't live to see high speed rail in the USA...and I don't plan on dying soon. Which is the smoothest riding high speed train you've ridden?
@samtrak1204, keep on voting Democratic _and_ writing your congressperson/senator to build more HSR (maglev for long distance cross-continental travel [New York to Los Angeles], standard steel rail HSR for corridor rail travel), and you'll be able to see it get built (also encourage others to do the same.)
Esto me hace pensar en lo caro que es viajar en los trenes japoneses y en algunos países europeos, fácil te saldría el doble de ese precio y si quieres primera clase o ejecutivo llegas a los 100 dólares o más
Korean railway technology before they developed their own is based on both french and Japanese technology. The electrification system is heavily based on Japanese technology.
Japan kind of developed the infrastructure in Korea when it was called Joseon, the SKoreans improved it and contracted the french to help with the HSR to alleviate the traffic down to Busan... and since Korea was "colony" of the imperial Japan, many things are based on that, which also seems to based on the dutch / british designs...
@@PrograError when the seoul subway was built Korea didn't have its own electrification technology. The first subway cars were imported from Hitachi and Nippon sharyo. The consortium of Hitachi and Nippon sharyo was in charge of early electrification stages too

General structure of Korean train system in about 5 years later = EMU-150 & ITX series (Low grade) / EMU-260, EUM (Mid grade) / KTX-Sancheon (KTX 2) & EMU-320 (High grade)
Can't wait to ride some more 😉
This new train has distributed traction

Hello from South Korea. I had never taken this train since my usual route has original KTX train. I never expected my country is introduced on this channel! Enjoyed a lot!
What is the average speed of ktx eum.i don't think they run on dedicated high speed tracks.
Thank you very much!
Dining cars have become almost nonexistent in Korail because the trips have become much shorter with faster trains. It only takes around 3 hours to the farthest cities from Seoul with the bullet train KTX.
Thank you for introducing South Korea high-speed train KTX-Eum.

Thank you Charles! I must make more time to see other parts of South Korea and hopefully the north one day too! 👍🏻🙂
The expansive glass train canopies are what I like most about European train stations. All balloon train sheds in USA were destroyed many many moons ago.
I don't miss those, and I don't think that you do, either.
Took several S. Korean trains back in the early and mid 70's. Very different from today. At that time they were mostly patterned after American trains of that era.
The older ones still are 😂
well... they are kind of a American "colony" directly after the War... most of the economic aid came from US anyways, plus the famous _Budae Jjigae_ from "born" from the US base food surpluses...
Absolutely, brilliant trains!!
Pity there's no other onboard catering but those trains look the business. Nice to see they follow the bullet train design of reversible seats.
Hopefully this will improve once they get introduced on the longer routes idk?
Nonstop Eurotrip: I find subsurface or underground stations a bit dingy.

This. It is truth.
I find East Asia super lax about random street photography. Only some shopkeepers want to keep their products secret from competitors
I find most of Southeast Asia very accommodating and friendly when it comes to making videos. Lots just want to be in them! Glad you enjoyed it 😌
Its actually called business class i think, lower than 1st class but higher than standard class, and 20% cheaper
The 320kph, 8 car trains that will be introduced also has these instead of first class, and it makes sense for this because travel times are at most 2 hours and 40 minutes, and you don't really need that much comfort, while switching to business class would allow for more passenger capacity and therefore more revenue
The short travel time is also why there arent any catering cars anymore too.
I know right!!
It's just a nice thing to have... Premium service

4:53 - It does seem strange that level boarding wasn't incorporated here.
Indeed. It's even very dangerous.

my guess it was a retrofit for HSR/ KTX service. IIRC the main Seoul station has high level platforms... ( from the memory of watching running man)
@@PrograError Thanks for the info.
From January next year, the train travel time between Cheongnyangni and Andong will be reduced to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
because the Jecheon-Andong section increases from 150 km/h to 260 km/h.
That's great news 😁
@@NonstopEurotrip And, from 2025

new ktx eum320(8량) will be introduce shortly and that train will have first class...

I did try the subway but I don't think the push people in anymore 😅 glad you enjoyed the video 📷
The population of Korea is decreasing very rapidly. The birth rate is now 0.72.
Most of subway stations in Korea are now unmanned. No staffes are there :(

Amazing 😍
It's a good video, but I can't help but point out two things.
1. KTX-EUM is not based on TGV. KTX-EUM, the power distributed joint (multiple power type) was developed by Korea's own technology is different from KTX-1 , the power concentration (Push-Pull type) developed based on the technology of TGV Réseau.
2. The train in this video has a maximum speed of 260 km/h. It is classified as a semi-high-speed train,,In Korea. High-speed train ,common KTX, has a speed of more than 300 km/h.
Thank you for your interest in KTX system.
All of this is mentioned in the video.
Having a maximum speed and running at that speed is not similar.the train in this video probably traveled at 180km/h max.

Wonder how many phones are forgotten innthose chargers....? That Seoul stn looks alright.... largely due to ceiling height IMO.
Q: was the DMZ tour an organized group affair or solo...?
Haha yes! And yes you must join a tour for the DMZ. You can't go in alone.
IIRC you could go there alone but there's "local" sign up for group which you need to sign... tho that's based on videos...

Definitely Japan. The Shinkansen is by far the best.

The railway technology seems to be from France, but the stations and facilities are very similar to those of Japan👏
The railway technology is Korean
Korean railway technology before they developed their own is based on both french and Japanese technology. The electrification system is heavily based on Japanese technology.
Japan kind of developed the infrastructure in Korea when it was called Joseon, the SKoreans improved it and contracted the french to help with the HSR to alleviate the traffic down to Busan...
and since Korea was "colony" of the imperial Japan, many things are based on that, which also seems to based on the dutch / british designs...
