    The juxtaposition of 'its a beautiful world' with images of the KKK, starving children, and police beating up '60's civil rights protesters towards the end of the video was just so well done. Devo were simply genius. Sad that they were so right about the state of the world and America. It's amazing how well they wove politics and social commentary into their songs and especially their videos.

    Devo was about 20 year ahead of their time. The concept of de-evolution and jocko homo. Revolutionary! Too many people missed who they are and what they tried to tell everyone. They predicted what kind of world we would exist in way back in the '80s. A band that was unappreciated in their time and only now do we see them as the visionaries that they were.

    Many people think Devo is a parody group who were a big joke. In reality, Devo was as punk rock as anyone.
    This video hit so close to home in 2023 that no one can deny what Devo was trying to say 40 years ago.

      I saw them the first tim ein concert in 1981. And we thought they were silly at the time, although talented. So were kind of making fun of them before they performed. But when they came out on stage? It was like they had stepped out of the film A Clockwork Orange. They were like a menacing, intellectual, futuristic street gang. Brilliant musicanship.

      My first instinct is to always agree with that general notion, but I also tend to then question myself and think are we really "de-volving" or is it more accurate to say we're evolving at a slower rate/stagnating? also is some of it that we're just exposed to EVERYTHING these days with media and the interweb and social media, etc. for example, the stuff in this video isn't like futuristic animations, it is actual footage from the past. And is that stuff, like racism, violence, wars, really any worse today than anytime in the past?

      and a certain amount of truth

    • @nxj18xbmc
      @nxj18xbmc Год назад +7

      @@eddiehauser6661 Not to be a pedant, but there's no such thing as "de-evolution" because evolution is a random process that has no directed goal or order. If, for example, humans started becoming less intelligent because being less intelligent improved their fitness (meaning that less intelligent people out-bred/out-survived more intelligent people), then it would still just be regular evolution. Natural selection, the mechanism by which randomly evolved traits either survive and spread or die out, is a process that acts with respect to the fitness of an individual within a specific environment. What I mean is that the selection pressures that save some traits and discard others do not act with a goal in mind, so there isn't a direction.
      However in less technical terms, people often associate evolution as "increasing the complexity or amount of information required to create an organism" and de-evolution as "decreasing the complexity," but even that is misleading as more complexity may result in an organism that is less fit for its environment.

    • @stevewilliams6901
      @stevewilliams6901 Год назад

      Well, if it's not de-evolution or de-volving, then what is it called when the entire planet is inbreeding? We're all breeding with our distant, and quite often 'not so distant' cousins. I don't want to hear it from you Nay Sayers, YES, we ARE all related genetically!!!

Well, dad got the contract to make the red Devo hats. Also, with The New Traditionalists album, he got the contract to make the Devo bibs. I got to see them for free when they played the L.A. This band meant Everything to me in high school. The fact that the radio wouldn't play them only fed into my image of being a rebel in my mind, lol. These songs were really really great. A year or two ago, as an elementary school teacher, imagine my happiness in hearing a 10 year old boy say, "Devo is my favorite band in the world." 'I'd never even heard of a child even know who Devo was. Obviously I questioned him about it, thinking I didn't hear what I heard. We had a few conversations about it since that time, lol. These cats were so much more than a mere gimmick. Glad to see someone else being the outlier and enjoying their outstanding music.

      Hmmm positive cynicism. Interesting terminology. It sounds like, well, reality. People often say I am too negative, however they can't see the simultaneous optimism in what I say during some of those times. They seem to want to be told nothing but flattering words, they want the facts to be omitted from what you say, like being molycoddled. I think the plain truth is liberating, personally.

      Billy Elliott The Foucault / Chomsky debates revealed Chomsky to be the warm and hopeful of the two. Both are treasures. I think Mark Mothersbaugh found a simple and elegant angle to cut through national nonsense. In that, he can share a niche with Foucault and Chomsky. Stephen Colbert has exploited a vulnerability in the rhetoric of the right that works in a similar way (i.e., that one step further right goes completely off the cliff). For those who deny that Devo describes life in the 21st Century, I say, "PEEK-A-BOO!"

      Billy Elliott Pangloss teaches that everything is for the best and that man lives in the "best of all possible worlds." I understand there was a popular philosophy of the time to always be positive. ALWAYS! It was as oppressive as "The Power of Positive Thinking." The meaning of life should be expressed as simply as possible. But no simpler. (Apologies to Einstein)

    Love that synthesizer riff, I just can't get it out of my head. I completely understand the sentiment of the song, but there really is a lot of beauty in this old world, it just has a lot of ugly mixed in with it. We all just have to do our part to make it a little more beautiful and a little less ugly. God bless & have a great day.

    Awesome track! But amazing how these young kids at the time, thought enough, to not only write a clever satire of sorts about the ridiculousness of our great World..., but then all the effort to back it up with this spectacular video, and all in 1981!!😲 Kudos Devo👍

    Anybody remember the old "Night Flight" on USA Network? That's the first place I ever saw this video, among MANY others. They had great indie films on there, too. Wish there was something interesting like that now.

    • @SciFiArtman
      @SciFiArtman 8 лет назад +4

      You can buy scores of Night Flight DVDs on Ebay. They tend to be a little on the dark and overly contrasty side, but otherwise good copies of all the golden goodness! Now getting all the New Wave Theaters (part of the Night Flight experience, as broadcast on USA) is a little trickier, but many are scattered across RUclips for free, so.... :)
      The DVDs run very long, so it's great to set a disk playing on the vid screen and get that great late-night Night Flight feeling again!

    • @HarlinNeal
      @HarlinNeal 8 лет назад +3

      I remember watching some late-night music video/variety show back in the early 80's, and actor Roddy McDowell introduced this video acting like he was sitting in a chair, smoking a pipe in his smoking jacket. And to answer your question...I remember "Night Flight" back in the 80's. There was a video I especially remember from that show...Jean Luc Ponty's "Individual Choice". That video had a lot of great aerial shots of cities across the country, and all done to a synthesizer and violin. Cool stuff back then.

I think I ripped the paper of and jumped up and SCREEEEAMED!!" at the top of my lungs as I waved it in the air.
