BALIK TANAW: Noynoy Aquino declares bid for the Philippine Presidency (2009) | Aquino for President

On 9 September 2009, after weeks of public clamour and embarking on a religious retreat, then Senator Benigno S. Aquino III declared his candidacy for the Presidency of the Philippines in the 2010 election. The announcement was made on the fortieth day since the passing of his mother, President Corazon C. Aquino, and on the same spot where she took her oath of office as President during the People Power Revolution in 1986.
Aquino decided to run for the presidency following the outpouring of support and patriotism that resulted from President Cory's passing, and was his response to the calls for change and good governance after what was termed the 'lost decade' of the Arroyo administration. He would go on to win the election with 15.2 million votes and 42.08% of the vote, the highest plurality in the electoral history of the Fifth Republic. He served as President of the Philippines from 2010 to 2016, and passed away in June 2021.
