My favorite story about “Justify My Love”: One of my best friends was the house DJ for the most popular underground club in the city we were living in when this song hit and the video was banned. No one had seen it yet. The video was going to be played on Nightline with Ted Koppel, which aired at midnight ET. His wife recorded the video ( yes, VCR on VHS ) drove the few blocks to the club, threw the video into the player at the bar, and 300 people stopped in the middle of a dance floor to watch this video for the first time on a huge screen at the front of the club. It was INCREDIBLE and we were MESMERIZED.
her business side of her is amazing she is
our Queen.
This story is amazing - Thanks for sharing!!!
Same thing happened at a bar near Chicago. Everyone stopped dancing at just watched the video. People started applauding atthe end
Great story! Thanks for sharing, I love reading about experiences to things when they first came out, especially controversial ones like this!
Why is she so relevant?
Because she used her voice beyond singing. 💥 👑
she said if you dont like me “Fuck You”, oh
and priest and nuns are gay.boo-yah.
she actually just skipped right over singing.
she rented an entire floor of the royal hotel monceaux in paris for a week for this video. the video was immediately censored by TV, MTV in particular which banned a video for the first time in its history. Madonna released it on VHS and sold over a million copies. One more stone in the building of the legend. Jean Baptiste Mondino made this video. Girl power before the time girls get some serious attention in a patriarcal time.
"So lucky me" 😊
The ending QUOTE:
"POOR IS THE MAN WHOSE PLEASURES DEPENDS ON A PERMISSION OF ANOTHER" ❤️
She also says it in the lyrics
@martinfehringer6408 For sure. Actually I forgot a heart.
Its a beautiful message
I will carry for the rest of my life
Artists are here to disturb the peace!
@MisterCornelius
We're talking about 1992... I didn't understand then, but I tried to justify the hatred towards everything that didn't conform, to the bigoted mentalities of those who behind the bush, did worse...But in 2024/25 almost... .are we still stuck at more than 34/5 years ago? I don't believe it, in the face of wars, plagues, a planet that is collapsing... (certainly not Coccone's fault) does the representation of what millions of people do... in private then... have an effect? We can safely implode now !!
@@angelopaoletti4768Justify my Love was released in 1990.
I love 90s Madonna the most and she was stunningly beautiful
Yessssss! Her 90's albums are my favorite and I think they're are beyond the others artistically. Bedtime Stories is marvellous. =)
Disruptive, you use the right word to define this video and that's what Madonna was always: disruptive, you nailed it 👌🏻
Lol, never seen u guys so STILL
😂
They didn't know what to do. LOL.
And Mike either smoked a joint before filming this or was very tired... his eyes were squinting, and his thoughts were all over the place 😂
@@MVUK358 I noticed that as well. He could barely keep his eyes open and focused.
FUN FACT: Lenny Kravitz co-wrote this song with a woman named Ingrid Chavez, who was at one time associated with Prince. And that's also him on backing vocals.
Love that song - so unorthodox. and it still hit #1 at the billboard
Remember we're in 1990 - 34 years ago!!! 👋👋❤
This comment made me want to dig a hole and climb in. I feel so old. 😂
The world's first commercially available VHS video single.
at 9.99 a pop.Amazing.
I still have my copy!
Famously banned by MTV and released as a VHS video single. The outrage reached the point that Madonna went on Nightline, a very serious ABC news show, spending 20 minutes defending herself for what you rightly described as an honest portrayal of human sexuality.
She opened the road for the new artists ❤
In the U.K. MTV would only play this video after a certain time at night. I remember watching it at a house party. We were all transfixed 😅
MADONNA IS THE QUEEN OF POP ❤
SHE PAVED THE WAY TO ALL THE ARTISTS 💯
Masterpiece...piece of art....Madonna still rules!!!!!!!!
I don't care what anyone says. Madonna is a great actress...in her music videos.
Art
1. Madonna was openly dating women at this time
2. This song, even without MTV airplay for the video, went to #1
3. There's an SNL "Wayne's World" parody of the video and the Madonna documentary Truth or Dare which came out around the same time (Madonna is actually in the parody so she's in on the joke)
The video was banned from MTV. So she put it out as the first video single on VHS and it sold over a million copies.
Really? That's such a boss move :D
shes a hustler a survivor.
More Madonna! Disruptive is the word for her work.
That was the anthem for all the sexy bars all over the world, Madonna made history by selling the video on VHS.
Madonna bouncing off the walls at the end, giggling, so funny
You paused the video before it ended, missing the phrase that appears on the screen at the end: POOR IS THE MAN WHOSE PLEASURES DEPEND ON THE PERMISSION OF ANOTHER“. Justify My Love” is one of the first videos censored by MTV, Much Music and other music television networks. That's why she decided to release it as a musical VHS, selling millions of copies. It was something unheard of in those years. Lenny Kravitz wrote it and sent it to her and did the backing vocals.
good point and they said nothing about Lenny
For the fear to see this video in front of your parents…
There’s a sentence in the song…
“Poor is the man who’s pleasure depends on the permission of another…”
Her majesty the QUEEN! 👑❤🔥
Love the video love this song. Madonna way ahead of her time
Yes you are right! Madonna broke the BS cycle! She made it all seem normal when at the time it wasn’t considered normal to talk, think and explore these feelings! She has always been daring and controversial if wasn’t for her artistry we would not of gotten every thing daring afterwards from other stars. Madonna deserves the respect she deserves even today. She is still [the] Queen always will be. That will never be taken away from her. She is etched in history!
It is actually romantic. "I want to hold your hand in Rome." "Talk to me. Tell me your dreams...tell me your fears, are you scared? Tell me your stories. I'm not afraid of who you are." You're right, it did make many marginilized people feel seen. But not just those people, everyone.
Beautiful poetry
Kinda tearing up...two fkn intelligent guys Getting it.
Forget sometimes, not everything we're force fed (Algorithm 🙄) online is true. Not "the temperature of the room" exactly.
Definitely a new fan here🥂🖤❤️🔥👑👑⚡️
Hands down one of the most artistic creative cool music videos ever.
The Queen of Pop
I had a night like this once in Philadelphia.
😂😂😂
I had many nights like this in the 90’s 😆
😂
I had a decade of nights like this. 😮
Yay finally! This video is still so fascinating and remains iconic. Remember it was done in 1990 and made headlines worldwide. I think it has very romantic moments, but that’s probably just me then, lol.
The song reached number 1 in the USA, so much for sounding like an „interlude“. The background vocals are by Lenny Kravitz by the way.
Props to Lenny Kravitz for producing, co-writing and using the sampled music from Public Enemy's "Security Of The First World."🔥🔥🔥🔥
Actually, Madonna is not telling you anything in this song. She never wrote it. The song was written by Lenny Kravitz. Those are his vocals in the background. Lenny felt this song would be more interesting from a female point of view, and offered it to Madonna. The video was immediately banned on MTV. She offered it on a video single. Made millions, the rest of his history.
There is a beautiful performance of this song for the finale of her Girlie Show tour. It’s outstanding. Both live performance and video are pure art.
Not true, she co wrote it.
Songwriter(s)
Lenny Kravitz Ingrid Chavez Madonna
Look it up.
@ She changed a few lyrics. Song was originally written by Lenny.
My favourite music video ever!! Pure genius from the Queen.
Our only Queen.
“ Uncomfortable“ that was def Madonna’s goal here.
Great song! And I remember when it came out, it was banned on MTV, so everyone had to buy it on VHS. Good times.
ANOTHER EPIC VIDEO!
Queen of Pop❤
I love the justify my love song it’s so unique.
You two are also awesome...good work !!
BEST FEMALE VIDEO EVER!!!!❤🎉
In the Nightlihe segment with Madonna, Ted Koppel commented on this video being banned and her releasing it as a VHS single (which had never been done before) to get around the censors.
Koppel; And now you’re laughing all the way to the bank, right?
Madonna: Yep. Lucky me
Epic.
G'day it's Steven from down under again
ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF POP!
“Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission sof another.”
Many people don't realize that Lenny Kravitz is singing throughout this song. A lot of people think it is just a generic background singer or Madonna herself - but Lenny does the most "singing" on this track. He's first heard at :56 just before Madonna starts "talking"
Dudes... You deserve it ❤
Madonna would, I think, love you calling this video disruptive. I really loved this track when it was released. No 1 single in the US, no 2 here in the UK. First ever video single release after MTV banned the video. The track samples Public Enemy and that’s what gives it that hip hop feel. You missed the quote at the end ‘Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another.’
Artists are here to disturb the peace.
Madonna.
I agree with your observation
I really enjoyed this commentary, and appriciate that you approched it with an open mind, and you actually gave me so many different pespectives with reagads to what is being expressed in the video, or rather, your understanding of it. With ❤ from Botswana 🇧🇼 Africa.
I think this song is incredible - a slow boiler of a song than simmers dangerously in the background like a pending threat. Massive Attack built an entire career around these sorts of atmospherics. Is this a sexy song? Fuck yeah. It’s a Gen X thing.
that's lenny kravitz doing the backing vocals btw. i think it would be funny to do this song at karaoke and just sing the lenny part.
this was also among my first cd maxi singles, and it's one of my favorites. a few mixes of this song, a banger remix of "express yourself", and just to be madonna; a reading of the book of revelations over the beat of one of the remixes.
my heart is still broken over the loss of the cd maxi.
I actually grew to LOVE this song. I had a kind of 🤷🏻♂️ reaction back in the day at first. Then i found its groove and still love it.
This was video was banned from MTV so Madonna sold it as a video single and it hit #1 on the hot 100. Speaking of interlude you need to check out the Justify My Love interlude from the MDNA tour from 2012.
"JUSTIFY MY LOVE" PUTS YOU IN A TRANCE GUYS!!!!
It was written originally by L'ennui Kravitz and filmé in Royal monceau palace hotel in Paris, Madonna and her whole crew rented the whole floor for everyone for 8 days.
I think the darkness you speak to resonated with everyone who has been made to feel that their sexual desires are wrong or sinful. You see it as lacking romance where as I saw it (I was a teen when this video came out) as sensual, beautiful, honest, and most importantly unapologetic. Which in 1990, at the height of the AIDS epidemic was a really bold move for a main stream pop artist. This video is one of the key reasons why Madonna has a die hard LGBTQ following.
I was in high school when this came out. The controversy was HUGE! The video was banned and she sold it as a VHS single for 10 bucks, which was a lot at the time. I bought it. It was like buying a adult movie at the time! lol. She made a fortune off video sales and got a ton of publicity. This single is off her first greatest hits, which is still her highest selling album.
I have a tattoo of this song. ''Justify My Love'' Madonna / Lenny Kravitz

Beyoncé pays homage to this in a very obvious way with her video for Haunted.
Another Madonna week is necessary! Focused on her work in the 90s? Please
Written by Lenny Kravitz and Madonna, the male voice is Lenny.
The guy in the video is model/actor Tony Ward, who had a brief real-life fling with Madonna. He also appeared in music videos of Spice Girls, George Michael, Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Dayne and Sinead O'Connor.
Spoken word single that went number 1
Best fucking interlude ever....😂😂😂
Fun fact- Lenny Kravtiz wrote this song and performed the background vocals.
I love your reacts. ❤
THE GOAT!
👸🏼
See "paradise not for me" it´s completely different and a piece of art.
Hello, Madonna had to go on TV to defend herself from the strong controversy caused by the video. where she defended herself quite well NIGHTLINE INTERVIEW 1990. Even Madonna in a film for the 1 years of MTV made a special video where she declared herself your worst nightmare
10 anniversary of mtv
When this came out and was released as the first video single … it was sooo risqué! The videos looked like snuff porn bootlegs stashed in record stores for $9:99. What a great time in pop culture.
Funny story with this song. Lenny Kravitz went to Madonna and told her I wrote song for you, he came with the song and the lyrics, Madonna changed or add a couple of phrases. They publiched the song as composed and written by (Madonna -Lenny Kravitz) This led to a lawsuit against Kravitz which resulted in an out-of-court settlement with INGRID CHAVEZ who really wrote those lyrics and and dedicated them to Kravitz who was her lover by that time, Lenny Kravitz composed the music and hide the Ingrid Chavez part to Madonna so in the Immaculate Collection Ingrid is not credited but after the settlement she is credited as one of the writers of the song. Years later she released her version. ruclips.net/video/A2dP3r-YE7c/видео.htmlsi=2mwldljsbXUgVnZd
Banned by mtv. Madonna made it the first video single ever sold.
YOU DID NOT SEE THE END….THERE IS A LINE
❤
Some believe the beat was taken not from Public Enemy, but from James Brown's song Funky Drummer (1970) about 5 minutes into that song.
U took too long for more MADONNA!
❤
I love when you guys are stoned 🙈🤣❤️
Imagine that in 1990.
The video was rejected by MTV that wouldn’t air it. So she decided so tell it as a tape single and it’s been the first time that happened. Useless to say became an absolute best selling article.
firsr video to be banned from MTV ...so Madonna was the first artist to sell a music video at the store and it was this one... she made more money.
We heard every thought you had from society very loudly. There are some fantastic interviews regarding this video, she was questioned by everyone.
Song was written by Lenny Kravitz. He jokes it technically was his first number one. This one caused a stir. The first video to ever be banned from Mtv. I remember even my mother who was quite permissive in what she let us watch wouldn't let me see this one back in the day.
Lenny Kravitz and Ingrid Chavez. Justice for Ingrid! 😉
@@colinmackillop Cool. Didn't know that.
@@jeffk.9075 You’re not alone - for many years it was only credited to Lenny and Madonna so none of us knew about Ingrid’s input, but the song is apparently based on love letters she sent to Lenny so she was eventually added to the credits. Naughty Lenny for not doing this beforehand.
Ok well now you have to listen to Rescue Me
Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another.
Love it 🩷🩷
I love Madonna so much!!! Thanks for react this masterpiece of sex! 🔥
A real modern masterpiece nowadays!
Please now You should react to “Erotica” Music Video from Madonna too.
You guys need to do Beth Ditto's 'I wrote the book' now. The music video is an hommage to this one.
The least believable thing in this video is Madonna carrying her own luggage. I love it!
PLS REACT TO OPEN YOUR HEART!!!!!! by Madonna of course
This is where Bey got her Haunted video
I would say this video (Justify My Love) inspired the video for Haunted by Beyoncé.
The video which is part of the period of the book "Sex" in which Madonna, together with many celebrities, enjoyed scandalising the usual right-thinking people, about her poor morality, ready to do anything to create a shocking image, make money on "prudérie "of people with two faces, condemnation on one side, morbidity on the other, who bought the book "just to understand" where an artist's ego can go, while they were excited to see photos put up, their unconfessed fantasies...Madonna with Tony Ward (who was her partner in that period, they acted out something that they had certainly already experienced) he was a former porn actor, then a successful model for great fashion designers, and the iconic dancers, of Blond Ambition Tour, caused quite a stir in those years. I bought the book with the CD, without any conspiracy, I love photography, strictly b/w, and it seemed beautiful to me. The video which at the time was broadcast on MTV late at night, seen now, as then, has never created discomfort or disgust in me, some BDSM images are true masterpieces, behind the rest there is Steven Meisel, a bit like Herb Ritts, who took the iconic photos, on her 37th birthday, August 12, 1989, in a private club in Hollywood (in addition to the photos for the "True Blue" album cover in 1986) Photographers, with very clear visions of the subject and the sensations he wanted to convey. Scandalizing the repressed Puritans, and they really succeeded! Ciao, Ange\
Madonna's 37th birthday was August 16, 1995
@@angelopaoletti4768 but what a great insight you gave here - Thank you ⭐
@@martinfehringer6408 I misread the title, in 1980 Madonna was at H. Ritts' birthday party...sorry.
@@angelopaoletti4768 ok at her early icon shaping years. I digged into her music from that time, it's a whole universe of other Madonna songs, raw talent 👑
Most of the young reactors to this music video sit there giggling all the act completely shocked. I always find it strange how they can be shocked in today's climate when you've got songs like WAP 😂 but it's really nice to see the maturity and Intelligence you display and by the way I actually think the song is brilliant. I think you need to listen to the audio on its own to fully appreciate it as the video is very distracting low. The guy moaning on the chorus was none other than Lenny Kravitz ❤
Excellent anylizesation of this video. I remember when this video video came out, everyone was labeling it as soft porn...it's just the lust and our inner thoughts that we all have inside.
