I lost the bottom half of my right lung to cancer in January of this year. I was cleared to exercise again by Feb. by my doctor so I was right back on the bike. Re learning where my VT1/2 border was took some time. Last weekend I set a PB for my best 100km time(28.1kph avg). I’ve lost top end anaerobic ability but I can still diesel around. I’m 61 yo. Nature built in quite a bit of redundancy into us and losing some significant amount of my total lung capacity (about 25%) has slowed me down slightly but I’m still alive and kicking. 😊
@@TheRedSonia thanks so much. We live in amazing times. Not so long ago this type of surgery would have taken a lot longer to recover from. Our surgeons today, with modern tools at their disposal, work miracles.
It’s great to see this video right now as I’ve just had nose surgery to open up the airways in my nose, remove a tumour and straighten the septum. I didn’t realise how much it was preventing me breathing properly. I’m 50 years old and only been cycling the last 4 years and struggle to get +50k comfortably. I was t sleeping properly for the longest time because of it. Another two weeks and I’ll be back on the bike. Can’t wait to test my new nose. 😂
I'm a mouth breather, often wake up with sandpaper tongue. Recently tried mouth taping and got a much better sleep (means keeping on top of the shaving routine for the tape I got, doesn't stick to stubble). I also for the first time went out and when I got to my supposed upper Z2 at 145bpm I consciously started to inhale only through the nose and out from the mouth, within 30 secs my HR had dropped 9 bpm and the only downside is it sometimes feels unnatural as your breaths per minute drops off and your brain starts playing tricks "am I getting enough air/oxygen"...the minute I started mouth breathing again on the bike back up went the HR....Most of the issues lie with never feeling like you can breath cleanly and this means lots of now blowing, and even picking, prior to exercise and sleep!!
Lots of folks don't understand why certain actions happen when they breath. Many folks pant and that's no good for CO2 exchange. Another practice is to do yoga where you are taught to breath as deep as you can. This delays VT1 to VT2 transition.
Excellent content! I still have lots of room for improvement, but I've noticed the difference in my performance when focusing on breathing correctly. Thank you!
Please see John Douillard's book "Body, Mind, and Sport" he taught nasal breathing only, with Darth Vader exhales over 30 years ago in this book. Nasal breathing supposedly boosts nitric oxide production also...
I tend to ride out of the saddle going uphill and one of the benefits for me is I feel I'm able to extend my upper body which in turn helps my breathing. (Also helps me blow out of my arse when the gradient increases:)
Lots of gnats down by the Riverside, all spring, most of the summer and some of the fall definitely do encourage nose breathing where I live. However, the ability to hold a conversation. I don’t find such a good gauge. I can trash talk people at race pace“why are you flicking your elbow at me, you’re not tired I’ll let you know when you’re tired. “
I do not have the skill, but someone please generate some Scottish Yoda content, it's what we all deserve in these trying times. Off to breathe through my nose now...
I try to nose breath, but there is too much resistance to air flow. I don't like the idea of using nasal spray to open my nasal passages. Does anyone have other ideas?
Remember those riders years ago in the Tour, they had tyres wrapped around their necks. They had breathing solved. They inhaled cigarette and pipe tobacco to open up the lung aveoli to breathe better. Yesssss!!! We today could take it further by inhaling a spliff to bypass leg pain. YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE And then there's always alcohol but im Irish and we are allergic to that holy water
Great tip, but reason why I’m not subscriber is because you don’t seem to clearly explain the full point. Points 1 and 2 only talks about inhaling via your nose. It’s not until point 3 that you mention anything about exhaling (unless I missed it) - but I shouldn’t be left with questions as you move to next talking point. I would suggest you state the full methods (in any of your videos) and not just one partial point, then move on to discuss the different benefits and scenarios.

Really important to breathe thru the nose of your trying to eat/drink!

I practised diaphragm breathing in the 80s and never turned back 🙌🇬🇧❤️
love it coach, thanks!

During z6 intervals I really focus on my breathing during the recovery interval.. Makes a huge difference.

Breathe in and *out* through nose? In seems fine, but I feel like I’ll be blowing snot bubbles if I breathe out through my nose 😂

I'm asthmatic and constantly struggle with breathing
Anyone ever tried 3.the steps breathing technique of Graeme obree?

@@georgeskinner2474 nasal dilators are great, nasal strips also work
Nasal strips?
I have one question. Do you drink beer from time to time or do you think its not compatible with beeing really really fit?
I love craft ale but if you want to be serious fit, don’t touch beer. If you must then treat yourself to only one after a century ride.

You're not breathing properly if you don't suck a haribo into your lung like a gasping Dyson hoover half way up a climb
