Two beloved artists come together for JUNGLE NIGHT, a soothing (well, MOSTLY soothing) bedtime story and instrumental lullaby. The small animated film begins with a narration of Boynton's Jungle Night book, with all the animal snores interpreted by the expressive and playful cello of Yo-Yo Ma. He even does the elephant's stop-the-show snore-though admittedly that took Ma's cello PLUS the horn salute of the James R. Barker Great Lakes steamship. The reading is followed by “Jungle Gymnopédie No. 1", a polyrhythmic jungly arrangement by Boynton of Erik Satie's renowned and beloved piece. "Yo-Yo and I chose this piece because it's the most gorgeous and mesmerizing night song imaginable," she explains. "And there was surely nothing else that could possibly get those animals backs to sleep after the elephant blast."

This is delightful! The cellist lion in the musical part moves his fingers on the cello's fingerboard to the exact position that YoYo Ma would put his in playing the Satie melody

Sandra writes and illustrates very funny/cute animal books that are so good that they appeal to adults too.
Wow!, I have to figure out how to use this in my elementary lesson plans! I have long loved this Erik Satie song on piano, but the combination of the Sandra Boynton story, illustrations and this song with Yo Yo Ma on cello takes it to the next level! What an awesome combination! My students and grandchildren are going to love it as much as I!

Brilliant. I love the detail you go to for the Cellist. Amazing.
Was in a museum about 11-years ago, and Erik Satie Gymnopédie No.1 came on while I was staring at a painting. The song mesmerized me. It instantly became a favorite. After hearing the story on NPR one Saturday morning, I had to investigate this gem of a mix. Very cool indeed.
P.S. The scene after the elephant snores showing all the animals awake is so hilarious.

I love this soooooo much, BUT what is up with the drums during gymnopedie? They are not even playing in the same time signature or even matching the music at all!!
Yep, that's the point! The drums and guitar have different time signatures to create a polyrhythm. From the description:

The drums and all the instruments are perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing
