- Franklin is a Rust Belt City located in Venango County, Pennsylvania. It was once home to major oil productions and manufacturing, but has been on the decline since the collapse of the industrial era. The population is currently sitting around 6,000 people and has been declining since the height of population at 10,254 back in the 1930's. Crime is average, houses are reasonably priced, good jobs hard to come by. There's many abandoned buildings and homes as you would expect, however many beautiful areas as well. Filmed a few months back. Let's take a drive and check some places out!
As you show all these towns around the country I would have loved to live there.Beautiful homes etc. Unfortunately we made a huge mistake not keeping our manufacturers in this country. The rich may have money but without the workers their will be less goods to buy. I loved my factory job but they left. Now people like me are old sick and dying off. I just don't see the hard work you have to put in to raise your family.
I just drove through Franklin pa last Sunday. It's a real shame what is happening in these small towns.
People tell me 1/3 of the nation looks like this. That's unacceptable. We've really run America into the ground.
The downtown is impressive and stands in stark contrast to the initial neighbourhoods that you rode through. That church is beautiful! When the KFC can't make it, that is sad. Thanks for sharing. ❤
My grandparents lived on the 900 block of Elk Street back in the 30s - 50s where my father was raised, before moving to Grove City. Back in the late 1800s my great-grandparents owned about 1000 acres around Franklin and had about 400 oil wells. My great-grandfather held a patent back then for a pulling machine. Great family history and proud to be a part of that lineage.
I've been there! In 1984, we drove up the hills to an old logging trail that took us to a river where we camped. The sandstone hills were beautiful and scary, as there were few guardrails. It sure seemed like a nice little town that glowed in the evening
Compared to most of the other places you've filmed, this town is still nice.
I was thinking the same thing.
I agree!
Me and my cat Blackie drove through this area almost 3 weeks ago and loved it. We stayed in Drums PA. Franklin downtown looks nice.
A town of contrasts. The downtown is beautiful, very nice, while nearby neighborhoods are crumbling and the commercial strip out on the highway is on its last legs ☹️
The snow caught me off guard .. I’m like wait we was just fishing in Altoona..😂 a few days good video capture of the town
Yeah it was a couple months back. I normally upload much quicker but in this one I wasn’t even sure I was gonna upload it.
My husband was from Franklin. We visited about 30 years ago. It was quaint and pretty then. Thankfully, some of this town still is. This was both heartbreaking and eye opening. I thank you for this video. I appreciate your work.
What happened to Franklin is that two famous oil companies Quaker state and penzoil that was founded there got bought out threw mergers. Shell petroleum of Texas closed the refineries and capped oil pump production... Shell moved everything to Texas and purchased the brand names only...
Facts 👍🏻
awesome tour, thank you. I really liked the big brick antique store!
Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for sharing this place. It's so sad..
I am from Frankin born and raised there what happen? Joy went out and no polk center .. No good paying jobs left to many bars !!
Happy Friday...
It's obvious to see Franklin City was a beautiful place to live with steep hills/ houses on hillsides / long stepped walk ways .. Down town still looking nice .. Thank you for sharing your time stay safe in your travels friend..✌🏼
This town doesn't look so bad, but I can see how pretty it must've been in it's day, and I bet it looks pretty in the summer. Downtown is cool with all the different colored buildings. I hope that old school/church is being renovated? Hopefully that big old brick building too? Thank you as always for the video. ps - it seems a lot of PA towns are built right on the sides of hills.
Awesome thanks biggie fan of your channel 💯
A lot of my childhood was spent in franklin. My grandmother lived there. Still travel there from time to time to see family members and visit certain stores.
Wow another town on its way to a ghost town this is so sad & disturbing 😢 yet in the main part of town the houses are huge! & gorgeous main st is full of character
Never heard of Franklin or Venango County. Is it near Oil City? Doesn't' look too bad. Maybe the buildings that are shot ought to simply be demolished and leave what's still OK in place. 6000 is still a lot of people. Komatsu has a huge facility. Is that where the jobs are? Interesting place. Probably looks a lot nicer in Summer.
I'd never of Franklin and when I looked it up I saw that it's less than 10 miles from Oil City, PA.
My father is buried in Franklin. His family grew up on a farm in Cherry Hill and moved to Franklin and my grandfather opened up a candy store .. way back in the 1930's 40's .. My fathers sister was a nurse at the hospital there , where my grandmother and father both died , 2 days apart from each other. So sad that the industry left and people needed to have employment .
What happened to the entire world?
Seems charming with some affordable houses in good condition. Can’t imagine the property taxes are much
this place must have been gorgeous during the holiday season. because you can still see the beauty any of these homes for sale ? this is like abandoned practically what's really going on in this country?
Another great video👍 thanks for taking your time and documenting this kinda stuffs😊 thank you
Thanks for watching!
The Apple festival brings in a lot of people and money. When I was a kid my father had a camp in Tionesta, we would travel through this area on our way through. It's a quiet place.
I'm from Franklin. I got out, but my sister stayed. She has worked at UMPC. For almost 30 years, and makes a little above minimum wage. She can barely keep a roof over her head. Gas and food are expensive. Gas is more expensive than it is up here in Connecticut.
I do like to go back to visit. In this summer, it's very beautiful.
Take out the city, and you have gorgeous, hilly landscape!!!!
Housing isn't cheap 😢anywhere
Are u driving a tank?
That sad to see all these house like that ruined by people just wish they leave them alone ...thank you for sharing have a great day
My husband grew up in Franklin and still has family members there. I have been there many times (Main Street) and love it.
You didn't film the big fancy really expensive homes on the River road in Franklin Highs or the mansions in Miller Park. There is still money in the area but only a select handful have it. Most of us can barely afford the taxes and insurance and still put food on our table.
Although the place is pretty rough, it is not quite as bad as the other places Mr. Hoods and Hollers has toured around PA. The Harrisburg one is really bad.
Thank you for this video; a subscribe and a thumbs up for you! The downtown looks very quaint and I can imagine what it must have been like to have grown up in a place like this when things were prosperous. I enjoy the drive-around; helps to really see what a place is like.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Keep on keepin' on HnH. Good work. 👍🏻
Thanks so much Linda! When I was filming the mailman was climbing up some of those steps didn’t look too happy lol
I go to Franklin from time to time in my travels... downtown is amazing... typical small town USA. Leonardo's is the spot if you want very good Italian food.
Talk about depressed economy when you can't even keep a KFC or a Long John Silvers afloat..
So pretty video! Please dont stop! 🎉
Thanks for watching!
correction, housing is NOT CHEAP, rent is outrageous very few job available. houses are not being taken care of due to costly rent people living off paycheck to paycheck..
Economy is so bad..
Some of the hillside houses don't look too "elder friendly"either. Those stairs. Yikes. My legs hurt just looking at tbem.
It took a long time for this to happen. Those left want to be here.
The town does look average but hey that courthouse annex looks great, there to remind the po' folks where their hard earned tax money goes. Even the fast food joints have moved out.
Wow
Franklin seems a bit better off than Oil City and other cities you posted. Downtown isn’t dead and there’s a constant flow of traffic
Really enjoy your videos.
Like to imagine what they used to look like.
Just becareful going places where people don't like being filmed.
My hometown
Yo i went here 2 weeks ago
Is this the city where the Franklin Mint is or was? I guess I should go look that up. Google is my friend.
Wawa, Pa over by Chester n Philly!
@@hoodsnhollers
Thanks... So is there a WaWa in Wawa? LoL
That city sure has a lot of stairs to get to the front doors of people.
The poor mailman lol. jk
You either walk down or up a long flight to get to some houses. I don't think I'd like that.
What a shame as I grew up there.
Talk about old fashioned
I don't know where you're actually showing but that is not Franklin Pennsylvania I live in Franklin nowhere around Franklin Pennsylvania looks like that
Okay now that you went into downtown I guess it is Franklin but I have never seen the neighborhoods that you showed that we're rundown
Too bad the people that had those steel companies didn’t have a time machine they can see what would happen when they did what they did.
