When I heard of the name of Cardinal Robert Prevost, now the elected Pope Leo XIV, my first thought was surprised because the Conclave was never elected a North American cardinal until now. I've though that an Italian cardinal would take over the Papacy, but it was not so. I'm just happy that it was over with and the new era begins in the Catholic Church with the election of Pope Leo XIV. Even to the non-Catholics out there, it's interesting to see how well Pope Leo XIV will would run the Papacy.

There was never a “No America” obstacle. Prior to 1978, there hadn’t been a non-Italian Pope for over 400 years. The real obstacle was that it was traditional for the Pope to be Italian. Only recently has the church broken with that tradition and taken into consideration cardinals of international origin.

However, if he was granted Peruvian citizenship without an application (for example, honorary citizen) then he can be dual citizen.
But of course the enforcement of this law is very relaxed. Almost never happens unless they want someone out. In case of a new Pope, they would love for him to keep it, actually.
