I love the symbolism that Ruyi had every step of the way to her end. To the emperor who was her husband, she said “you always thought you were alone on the mountain. So be alone.” So poetic and lady like, but fierce and uncompromising. Ruyi always treated Hongli as her lover who happened to be the emperor. She treated him with kindness and understanding and even with compassion and fidelity as someone she loved with her entire being. At the end, she saw it was the other way around. He was an emperor who happened to be her husband. She saw as he treated her as nothing more than a pawn in his never ending game of politics and love. He loved her when it was convenient, but he never treated her with sincerity. She saw the years and lives wasted on a man who always saw himself as above others who were constantly scheming against him. She saw all the women and children who were lost along the way because of their circumstances and wept, even for those who schemed against her. Ruyi grew with this man and thought their relationship overran all of that. But in the end she was wrong so she removed herself from a game she was tired of playing. Even his last words to her, all the emperor could say was leave the past in the past and move on. He was not willing to address his mistakes or put Ruyi and all she lost above his own pride. He gave power when he saw fit and took it away just as quickly. Same with his favor and love. He was an emperor playing at a man, and not a man who happened to be emperor. He was no longer Hongli but Qianlong. Ruyi loved Hongli, but not Qianlong.
The Emperor had killed Ruyi's love bit by bit, until it was dead. He most probably had no idea how he felt about Ruyi until he lost her. I guess I got sucked into this one (it is only a story, isn't it?}.
