This game did start it all. I played this when I was 8 or so, on my cousin's PC. Several years later, PFS games like Goldeneye 007, Duke Nukem, Doom and Quake were all popular on the N64, but this game was the precursor. N64 brought FPS to the masses, but Wolfenstein is the original. Personally, I enjoyed Duke the most as a kid, between the big guns, the sexuality and the trash talk, it just made it so much fun. :)
Nothing more Wolf3D than knowing where every secret door is, killing every Nazi, getting every treasure, and also spending nearly a minute wandering around trying to figure out which door you had not yet entered.
That amazing soundblaster sound!! Sooo good. Listening to Lex Freidman interviewing John Carmack and came back here for the nostalgia. No idea how many hours were spent on this game. It actually still looks surprisingly good IMO.
It all depends how well your opponent's aim is. On only the second level of difficulty, I once had a guard take me down from 100% health to 7% in a single shot. The officers are also more fearsome partly because their aim is better and they react faster. The trick is to shoot before they get a chance to aim, or keep moving. You can often stare down a bunch of guards safely for several seconds by using bullets to keep their aim poor. I wish other games had such tactics.
Hmm. I spent far too many hours on this game, but I never worked out that shooting at the guards would reduce their ability to aim at you in a kind of 'suppressive fire' mechanic. I assume that this is what you are referring to? Oh well. I guess that ship has sailed now.
My first video game was Doom II, I have spent and continue to spend countless hours on that game, especially with all the cool mods the community has been making the past decade or so. When I first discovered the secret map in Doom II, I didn't even know this game existed and I didn't find out until like a year later, and then it all made so much more sense to me.
Played this game on my old macintosh performa as a child. The noises were different than this and it didn’t have this music. Germans spoke more, it was better.
I have the Mac version as well. For the most part, it is the best version of the game along with the 3DO version, but the only drawback is that all the sprites are 2D and are always facing the player. Conversely, three of the bosses from the original were replaced by Spear of Destiny bosses. Other than that, both are great ports. Despite there being less music, I really enjoyed Brian Luzietti's musical score in the Macintosh version.
Good work on this level!!! I tried this on a demo. But i didn't get very far. Hopefull i will be an expert on this game... But what part of this game is different then the Doom games?
wow.. I just got done playing Wolfenstein for the PS3.. then viewing this.. this game was badass for it's time.. I remember playing this all the time when I was 5.. hehe.. back in my carefree days..
I feel so nostalgic when i see all these games.. Duke Nukem doom wolfemstein prince of persia sky roads paratrooper karateka all dos games those were the days 😢😢😢😢
Don't go check out that video, it's full of misconceptions and fallacies. Doom is often discribed as a 2.5D game but it certainly isn't as 2D as the video claims. Doom has restricted 3D capabilities, but even John Carmack himself has said that it's 3D. Not true 3D in the sense that the enemies are sprites and the Z axis is somewhat differently used than in more modern engines, but 3D nontheless.
I remember going to work with my stepdad when I was a kid and I would play this on his service department computer he would be yelling at me to stop clacking and slamming on the keyboard 😂
@aych, just the controls were easy the fun in it and the memories I just loved it. Compared to the new fps games I would say it had no hope but I'm old school what can I say.
I think I still have this for Atari Jaguar. I remember buying it on a closeout years ago and this, doom, and alien vs predator were like the only good games I ever found for it.
Actually this Wolfenstein 3D was released in 1992 and Doom was released in 1993 -- both by ID Software; so technically, Wolfenstein 3D came first and can bear the title FPS grand pappy.
Doom is the Father of all fpses, Wolfenstein is the Grandfather. Wolfenstein: You young whippersnappers with your 3D movement and floor/ceiling textures and your fancy different levels of lighting.
i spent my whole childhood playing this game
You and me both. This was the first PC game I've ever played.

2.5D

The grand daddy of the FPS genre .
