Just got done doing this with my sons X-box. Was on a business trip and my son called me and told me his X-box had the e-74 error. I told him that it was probably toast but that I would look at it for him when I got back. Just got done following the instructions in this video, and the fix worked. My son is now upstairs playing Mine-craft once again. The only thing that I did different was that I couldn't find my heat gun that I usually use on my RC planes to stretch them taut, so I used my wife's hairdryer. Thanks for the video, you saved me some cash!
Thanks man for sharing this info, I just successfully fixed this error on an HDMI unit using your hotplate stovetop method and she boots right up and runs like new. Thank you. Don't listen to these other guy's comments saying it won't work and all that bs, this fix is legit and works like a charm.
Loved the "Are you done" whisper at the end. My daughter constantly records me working on my electronics with her iPod, As soon as I break out my torque wrench and repair kit she goes running for her iPod and makes sure my water cup is full, she loves to narrate as well so the whisper made me laugh a bit.
just fixed a Halo 3 limited edition console by doing this......I was skeptical at first until the xbox dashboard came up on the screen.....looks like my tech skills just advanced a bit further....just awesome! Awesome video....i would like to see more of these from you!
Great tutorial man. Using your hot plate method not only did I fix an XBOX 360 but also a PS3 and a Gateway laptop that had lost the video output (turned on but no video whatsoever). Thanks for taking the time to make and post the video.
UPDATE: This worked for only 1 month. My E-E friends think I probably shortened the life of the part. Too bad. I'm going to try other fixes next. ------------------- This worked for me. I followed the instructions exactly. 10 minutes over pyrex on medium-lo (halfway b/t low and medium on my electric stove) approx 2 minutes across all 3 chips (40 seconds each) with a chicago electric heat gun on high, 15 minutes more baking, 30 minutes cool off (but actually left it for about ~1.5 hours because i went out for coffee). This seemed to work just fine after 30 min high graphics gaming, 1.5 hours of playing a DVD, and 2.5 hours of 2D XBox arcade games. I wonder how long it will keep working for. One my electrical engineer coworkers said that this procedure is at best risky, but it follows the pattern of how to reflow. You bring it up to a certain temperature (the hot plate), then expose it to high heat for 40-60 seconds (for older non-ROHS chips only, ROHS chips can take more heat for longer, not sure how long). He said that you had better not put too much heat on those chips because it could either ruin it (do more damage) or lessen the life of the chip if you overheat it. They are made to take a certain amount of heat during the manufacturing process, but not for too long. He also said that using a conventional stove and heat gun weren't such a great idea because you don't know what temperature they're at and it's not finely controlled. There is a spec for CPUs/GPUs like this that can give you a good idea of what the exact temperatures are. This may have worked for me for the time being (this was also the first such issue with this xbox afaik since its manufacture in 2008), but as I've read below there may be better reflow procedures, or even "reballing". Oooo. Another thing my engineer friend said: If the cause of the disconnect was a contaminant, the issue will come back shortly after, but if it was a cold (disconnected) solder joint then this should work. He also said the real way people fix this is by using the holes on the underside of the board from where the chip is mounted to find out what pin was disconnected and then reflow just that one (they have heat guns with a small tube on the end that could probably help). You'd have to test for signal using a scope though... ugh (expensive tool). Hope this helps. Great video, pleasantly surprised that it works now!
Thanks so much for this video bro. It's great people like you take time out their personal lives to help the people that are clueless when it comes to things like this, such as myself. This worked perfectly!
Worked like a charm for me! I drilled 10mm holes in the bottomplate where the studs were mounted so the 5mm bolts are completely free. I also kept the DVD-drive hooked up with all the powerups, otherwise the Xbox will be banned from xbox-live. Thanks for the idea of the hotplate, this really did the job!
Awesome. I did the fix with the instructions you provided and it works perfectly. I just played an hour of MW3 and seems to have no issues. I really appreciate the video. This thing has been sitting for almost 3 years now in my room not working, I'm glad I'm able to use it again.
I love you man!!! I just got an xbox360. It was dead and they wanted to throw it away. I bought thermal paste, turned on my oven, blast it with a borrowed heat gun and finished in a few hours with everything. I just couldnt belive my eyes when it just turned on and worked perfectly :) Thanks a lot, you are awesome!
Method works great. Thanks. Didn't work until I flowed liquid rosin under the chips. Be careful with the heat gun. When the rosin starts boiling out, you "might" want to start thinking about removing the heat.
This worked like a champ. I did the preheat for 10 mins, then blasted the CPU and GPU for 30 seconds each with the heat gun set at 750. I held the heat gun about 2 inches above the chips. I then did the pulse up and down on the other 2 chips for 30 seconds each. I then went back and hit the CPU and GPU again with the same cycle I used the first time. After that I let the MB bake for another 30 minutes, and then I let it cool to the touch before moving it. I used Arctic Silver paste and closed it all back up. Awesome!
Thank you good sir for your amazing video. If not for I would not finally have my dream game at my house. I've always had to play at my friends house cause I could afford one. His finally took a dump and he went and got the new one. I took the 360 out his trash brought it home and in a few short hours I had him come over and showed him his old game back to life. Heck he even let me keep it and gave me a game or two and a controller. Wish I could shake your hand my good friend!!
Awesome video Sir!! Repaired the box a week ago without the hot plate, worked for about a day. Found your video and used the hot plate/heat gun, works great now. While I had it open I also did all the penny fixes, on the ram chips and on the NAN chip figured I might as well while I had it open. Thanks!!!!!!!
Thanks, bro! This video was very helpful followed instructions and guess what I revive my first Xbox 360! Xbox had put away for 5 yrs collecting dust until and now I have an Xtra for kids to play with. Many Thanks!
What is « arctic cat » ?? my x box had an E74 since 4years, actually I will want to repair it (I m sorry for my english i m french 😅, is difficult for me to understand all your movie but i loved repair it 😂)
Thank you for the tips and tricks...bro:), I modified the entire cooling system. My entire console shell started to crack (It is was an old unit), so I ditched the top shell and installed a 4inch cooling fan as an air inlet. Its working fine...👍
I reflowed mine and works perfectly ..i would put more custom fans after the reflow..I covered my motherboard with tin foil around the edges just to protect other components.Anyway its been a good couple of years now and had no issues.
fixed mine using exact method, also added small heatsinks to ram ect. Arctic silver ftw, may add a couple separately powered externally mounted fans for push pull(wall warts) on the outer plastic side vents.
thanks for the great video brotha! got a couple questions for you. I took apart the box like you showed and I also had all those washers come off. did you reassemble the box with or with out them? Also the bottom of the board has 4 "gummy like" squares , are they aftermarket and do I remove them during the hotplate treatment? thanks again for your help.
I have a question, but the website you listed no longer works. I would like to know what exact size star-tip screwdrivers were used when you detached the X-shaped bars under the radiators to detach them. I have gotten as far as this point, but cannot seem to find the right size of star-tip screwdrivers at my computer store nor at Lowes, our local hardware store, and Best Buy actually refuses to repair any console unless you bought BOTH the console there and also payed over $100 for an extended warranty.
what are "star screws"? Do you mean torx screws? Now if I only had a normal hotblate (have an inductive one) and a heatgun i could do this! the only other thing I have which can make alot of heat is a soldering iron, but i guess that won't be enough because of the warping issue you described.
I’m six years late you your just want a few toothpicks to take the bottom and top panels off a torx 10 screwdriver and something smaller than a toothpick to take the Sade panels off
Well done what was done in the video, and to my surprise all worked well, have been trying other methods over and over with the Xbox only running for 1 hour then freezing :THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME:
Thank you for making this video it was amazing how easy you made it look to bring it back from the dead. Just had one question, how thick is those pieces of wood your using?
Nice video man. I have done a bunch of laptop reflows, just never an xbox. I like your method of heading up the motherboard prior to the reflow. Just doesn't seem like you head up the chips very long. Do you ever have a customer call a couple months later and say the same thing is happening?
I have not had a complaint the way i have done it, thats why it sits on that hot plate for a while before starting this way the solder is already pretty close to a melting stage and the heat gun just puts into Full effect. also since you work on laptops be nice to have another Tech guy on my forum at rickteg.com
this depends now i have seen some E74 errors that will not rid this problem simply because when someone took the x clamps off they didnt notice the little chips on the board camp off with it and this will not fix a problem with a board that you knock little chips off i have seen it multiple times when people bring them to me
its all the same on XBOX or PS3 there just not built to last anymore the companies use such cheap parts and solder and yet sell at so high lets see which of the next two last longer The PS4 or XBOX ONE
So after doing all this i started the system and it turned on and gave me a message on ventilation. After a bit i turned it off then back on and right back to an E74. Any reason? And if so a solution?
this red ring rubbish. they fail because they have to legally use unleaded solder which cracks easier under heat than leaded, the only actual real fix is to get it reballed with leaded solder by a professional, not a guy that sticks it over a hob with no protective equipment, no actual knowledge of professional electronic repair, and no idea about static transfer. getting a heat gun and blasting it is not a permanent repair. it's a temporary one.
thanks your video helped me I changed the thermal paste and I sticked 2 screw drivers where the fans are let the Xbox 360 over heat until 2 red lights its how I fixed my Xbox 360
if it hasnt worked are you still using the clamps or did you put the screws back in and if you under do the work it will not fix it and if you over due it it will cook it
This error is caused by a cold solder joint under the GPU, (H)ANA-chip or in between. Mostly it is one of the outer solder balls on the side facing the (H)ANA chip so a shim increases the chanced of success quite a bit. Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing parts near the GPU and the (H)ANA chip.
dude you 0wned this fix totally helped me out i tried the towel trick and the paper clip over drive both failed, but yourz 0wn3d man, about to put the spare xbox you helped me fix in a spare vehical...
Hi, I have a question. I just took my Xbox to a repair shop and I worry that they are going to fix e74 the way someone attempted to fix it in this video, with all that cheap paste. I am just a layman, so could you tell me how I should phrase my question when I ask them how they repaired my Xbox? Would it be something like "Did you use a heat gun, or just thermal paste"? Thank you
Ask them if they re-balled or re-flowed the board. Those are the only professional fixes. What is shown in this video does work, but it is only temporary and most likely will come back, it could be a day, a week, or even a month or so depending how long you game...but then again it could be within the first few minutes of playing a game again. No disrespect to the guy posting the video it will help people get their xbox running although not permanent to never happen again. Peace.
if you do this cover the capacitors with like for layers of aluminum foil. make sure u clean the gpu and cpu better i saw the thermal paste and heat the board up a little with heat gun to prevent the warping. happens less if evenly heated. the time he did the chips was not enough. yo can put a piece of solder to see if it melte on a green part of the board wher no circuit is. if your solder is lead that melts easier its harder to melt the solder under the chips. he completely omited the flux part. if you put a piece of solder the heat gu can blow it around so be careful not to bridge stuff its just to gauge the heating process. careful with the capacitors those cyclinder things can get hot better to avoid them with heat gun and even better to shield them with aluminum for or a second hand with tin.
really good step by step video. i still have my one flashing lite on one and three flashing on the other. if i couldnt fix it even with this step by step video i cant do it. how much do you charge to fix.
it was missing the clamps that hold the heatsinks down to maintain contact with the gpu and processor how long did this thing actually work for after the fix?
E74 is due to usually the graphics card and or the HANA chip is bad or the soldering has come loose on these and this fix can solve that problem too depending if the HANA chipset has not failed completely
Setting of 3 (for your stove) didn't mean much to me and it looks like I may have burnt the chips on my xbox board. I used a hotplate just below the medium setting. Probably should have set my hotplate on low or warm. Also, may have needed a bit more clearance. Only had about 1 inch.
2 red lights just means overheating. The E74 error is from overheating but to the point of cracking solder joints, so the slight overheating to begin with was just from the heatsinks not being in place. He was just testing to see if it showed an E74 error again meaning he would have to heat up the board more.
sir the people who refurbished the xbox are gamestop and mine looked the same when I opened mine up I replaced the thermal paste and I put x clamps back on and I also had to replace the sata cable and the disk drive power cable. also the cord extention as you called it is a 12 volt fan mod thing for the 360 and it mad mine red ring in a week
now copper is a heat conductor dont get me wrong but not every penny is actually copper you need one from like before 1976 or something like that to be full copper i personal have seen this used but at the same time of the repair of YLOD
My xbox has 3 red lights then immediately goes to two i applied the arctic silver and re attached the heat sinks but it still comes up the same I have repaired red rings in the past but this is the first time I am not successful.
Zigma i bought the xbox replacement xclaps, it comes with screws instead of clamps and also i applied thermal paste to the ram thermal pads, it was for error 0220 i think and 0110 dont get a reball ever they are a rip off also dont tighten the screws or the xclaps leave them loose
guynumber20 just found out its the ram chips under the heat sink. cos l8er models don't have thermal pads on the bottom. u need a heat gun. I got 2 consoles here with the excact same problem
I think it just may be too much thermal paste that did it caused the chips t short on gpu or cpu. When you clean and reapply paste thin layer like tileing i use the toothpaste end to make little grooves and toothpicks to hold the plastic washers in place while i put the heatsink screws back on.
can someone help me figure this out? i got an xbox wich I believe is a jasper wich i read dont get rrod, well i got it but i dont know for sure if it is the rrod . my xbox boots up and i can play maybe for up to an hour and then the red light. Is it how the red ring starts until the xbox doesnt boot up? or is this a power supply problem or something else?
Thanks a bunch man! I just fixed two dead phat's :D Don't mind the haters mate, this method is way better than what I used to do (Penny fix). The only thing I did differently was using a bracelet with a wire connected to ground on the 'box. Oh and I used some old chinese thermal paste that might be silver-based judging by the colour, but I have no idea. I'm broke as fuck at the moment xD
hello mr electronicguy , is it really necessary to remove and paste back w thermal paste ? i think the procedure is possible to do wo removing more parts from the motherboard.
Yes, the paste dries out after a while, and heating it up like this would only make it more dry to the point of really just being dust. Always use new paste when messing with Gpu's and Cpu's just to be sure you have some good thermal dissipation.
Anyone watching this today, remember this is only a temp fix, if that. Removing the X-clamps and installing bolts is NEVER a good idea. It warps the board. Re-balling it on the stove or in the oven is also hit or miss. The problem with the 360 wasn't bad solder or weak X-clamps, it was a manufacturing defect within the GPU chip itself.
Thanks for the video, you saved me some cash!

just fixed a Halo 3 limited edition console by doing this......I was skeptical at first until the xbox dashboard came up on the screen.....looks like my tech skills just advanced a bit further....just awesome! Awesome video....i would like to see more of these from you!
Is it still working
Great tutorial man. Using your hot plate method not only did I fix an XBOX 360 but also a PS3 and a Gateway laptop that had lost the video output (turned on but no video whatsoever). Thanks for taking the time to make and post the video.

Got to about 0:45 and had to go to the hospital.
+Jonathan Cauley There was blood everywhere!
Are you sarcasm immune? Or are you being sarcastic yourself?
+Jonathan Cauley he was joking about the statement "now pull your face off" its ironic humor. welcome to the internet.

I have this error to ima try to fix it
I fixed my E74 error following this instructions and replacing the xclamps with a Hybrid eXtreme Repair Kit. Thanks :)

yea heat make the pins soften on cpu and gpu
Hm. Imagine that. Overheating error with NO HEAT SINKS ON IT. Dude....
Thank you good sir for your amazing video. If not for I would not finally have my dream game at my house. I've always had to play at my friends house cause I could afford one. No thermal pads on the RAM... Did you add some? Those are IMPORTANT.
no , pc do not
0:44 "First you'll wanna pull your face off" lol pretty accurate
Check out the Grateful Dead if you want it stolen or melted instead (~)};-)
Awesome video Sir!! Repaired the box a week ago without the hot plate, worked for about a day. Found your video and used the hot plate/heat gun, works great now. if its broke you cant hurt it right
If it's not broke, break it and fix it anyways. That's my motto!

Woot...thank you sir....this vid saved my 7 years old xbox that got RROD for the first time today :)
Thank you for the tips and tricks...bro:), I modified the entire cooling system.

Thanks my 360 works once again....i think i will cut and install an extra fan in my xbox to prevent this since i reused the xclamps
Rick, I am gonna try this. I trust in you that it works. Thank you for posting this video. (after I just cursed out the GameStop guy)
couple ppl said the fire stove didnt work i personally havent had a gas stove you could try it on low
fixed mine using exact method, also added small heatsinks to ram ect.

Man, Thanks to your You Tube video I fixed my Xbox as good as new.
Many Thanks for being so generous with the knowledge.
BJ
I cannot believe it...but it WORKED on mine...thanks A LOT!
Ah yeah this Electronic NiNjA fixed his e74 error also by following the ways of the Electronic NiNjA. Kudos my NiNjA! Thanks!
Hey Rick, how would you fix a PS3 Fat 80GB with YLOD?
if there is a permanent fix so why do Microsoft say why e74 can't be permanently fixed
what are "star screws"? Do you mean torx screws?
Now if I only had a normal hotblate (have an inductive one) and a heatgun i could do this!
the only other thing I have which can make alot of heat is a soldering iron, but i guess that won't be enough because of the warping issue you described.
I'd recommend a list of tools needed
I’m six years late you your just want a few toothpicks to take the bottom and top panels off a torx 10 screwdriver and something smaller than a toothpick to take the Sade panels off
YOU ROCK my daughters xbox360 that was purchased on launch day is now up and running now to try this on my elite thank you again :)

That is a heat gun
Can i use hair dryer?

baking a pc i know?
If you're doing a lot of this reflow work, get yourself a pie warmer oven and use an 80 - 85 C temp setting, much better for the components and joints
thanks your video helped me I changed the thermal paste and I sticked 2 screw drivers where the fans are let the Xbox 360 over heat until 2 red lights its how I fixed my Xbox 360
You really know what you are doing!! I fixed an Xbox 360 and instead of a heat gun, I used a hair dryer. Really great video!!!
Please don’t use that.
To everyone that helps on my pages thank you as i do not always have time to help everyone when i am traveling
if it hasnt worked are you still using the clamps or did you put the screws back in and if you under do the work it will not fix it and if you over due it it will cook it
This error is caused by a cold solder joint under the GPU, (H)ANA-chip or in between. Mostly it is one of the outer solder balls on the side facing the (H)ANA chip so a shim increases the chanced of success quite a bit. Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing parts near the GPU and the (H)ANA chip.
You are a legend.
i did this and it lasted for a day or to and it showed the e74 warning again
ernest green
ok so the reason that it dident work for me was becous i just used a hair drier not a heat gun but when i used a heat gun it worked great
Yeah it works just never lasted long for any I've fixed that way or similar ways. Good luck though
After you put the thermal paste on the chips what are the two thing you put back and how did you put it back did you use and thing
dude you 0wned this fix totally helped me out i tried the towel trick and the paper clip over drive both failed, but yourz 0wn3d man, about to put the spare xbox you helped me fix in a spare vehical...
My thing is how did you you turn it on without the heat syncs on because because I thought you could do that now my console is fried
Lashing turtles run marathons
really good step by step video. i still have my one flashing lite on one and three flashing on the other. if i couldnt fix it even with this step by step video i cant do it. how much do you charge to fix.
it was missing the clamps that hold the heatsinks down to maintain contact with the gpu and processor
how long did this thing actually work for after the fix?
What heat setting did you keep the heatgun at? I have a heat gun and it has heat setting 1 and 2, so is it best to keep to at 1, the lower setting?
so to fix any Red Ring Of Death, you just need to replace the thermal paste and your good to go?
Hi what is it called the thing that looks like a blow dryer and the black thing you put on ?
E74 is due to usually the graphics card and or the HANA chip is bad or the soldering has come loose on these and this fix can solve that problem too depending if the HANA chipset has not failed completely
It worked great for me, many thanks Rick
Setting of 3 (for your stove) didn't mean much to me and it looks like I may have burnt the chips on my xbox board. I used a hotplate just below the medium setting. Probably should have set my hotplate on low or warm. Also, may have needed a bit more clearance. Only had about 1 inch.
Opened my xbox 360 and saw that there was 2 capacitor missing will it still work
"*whispers* are you done" at the end
Why does heating up the Xbox fix the E 74 error when you just used thermal paste at the end to fix a 2 light?
2 red lights just means overheating. The E74 error is from overheating but to the point of cracking solder joints, so the slight overheating to begin with was just from the heatsinks not being in place. He was just testing to see if it showed an E74 error again meaning he would have to heat up the board more.
Hello, what are the list of screwdrivers and items i will need to fully fix this error?
i did everything exactly as you did, except for the heat, and got three rings when i tested it. any thoughts?
sir the people who refurbished the xbox are gamestop and mine looked the same when I opened mine up I replaced the thermal paste and I put x clamps back on and I also had to replace the sata cable and the disk drive power cable. also the cord extention as you called it is a 12 volt fan mod thing for the 360 and it mad mine red ring in a week
game stop literally fucked my hardware. had to replace half the shit they fucked.
now copper is a heat conductor dont get me wrong but not every penny is actually copper you need one from like before 1976 or something like that to be full copper i personal have seen this used but at the same time of the repair of YLOD
Why does he need to heat the mother board?! Anyone?
my friend just got this today from playin mw3, we're gonna be trying this method ASAP , thank you =]
It works beautifully. Thank you sir!
My xbox has 3 red lights then immediately goes to two i applied the arctic silver and re attached the heat sinks but it still comes up the same I have repaired red rings in the past but this is the first time I am not successful.
eRa Zigma I have the same problem. fixed a couple now. but the last 2 don't wanna work
Zigma i bought the xbox replacement xclaps, it comes with screws instead of clamps and also i applied thermal paste to the ram thermal pads, it was for error 0220 i think and 0110 dont get a reball ever they are a rip off also dont tighten the screws or the xclaps leave them loose
guynumber20 just found out its the ram chips under the heat sink. cos l8er models don't have thermal pads on the bottom. u need a heat gun. I got 2 consoles here with the excact same problem
Jeff oops i just bought some and but thermal paste and loosened the screws
I think it just may be too much thermal paste that did it caused the chips t short on gpu or cpu. When you clean and reapply paste thin layer like tileing i use the toothpaste end to make little grooves and toothpicks to hold the plastic washers in place while i put the heatsink screws back on.
0:44, 'first you wanna pull your face off'. 😂😂😂
No your heating the top and bottom of the board to reflow the solder on the board if it was only as easy as replacing the thermal paste.
never seen a light for the dvd not being connected
can someone help me figure this out?
i got an xbox wich I believe is a jasper wich i read dont get rrod, well i got it but i dont know for sure if it is the rrod .
my xbox boots up and i can play maybe for up to an hour and then the red light. Is it how the red ring starts until the xbox doesnt boot up?
or is this a power supply problem or something else?
You mentioned that it can warp if it cools too quickly. Is there a way to fix that if it happens?
i dont see why it wouldnt you might want to keep it on about 10 to 20 seconds longer and let it get warmed up before you do it
that hot plate trick demolished my Pyrex pan... :((((( gonna try without that
Thanks a bunch man!
I just fixed two dead phat's :D
Don't mind the haters mate, this method is way better than what I used to do (Penny fix).
The only thing I did differently was using a bracelet with a wire connected to ground on the 'box.
Oh and I used some old chinese thermal paste that might be silver-based judging by the colour, but I have no idea. I'm broke as fuck at the moment xD
can you use a hair dryer if you dont have a heat gun ???????please reply
Hey how much to fix this?
I don't want to do it cause I don't want to mess it up
don't have heat gun can I use a blow dryer it get pretty hot?
This method worked for me, thanks bro
hello mr electronicguy , is it really necessary to remove and paste back w thermal paste ? i think the procedure is possible to do wo removing more parts from the motherboard.
Yes, the paste dries out after a while, and heating it up like this would only make it more dry to the point of really just being dust. Always use new paste when messing with Gpu's and Cpu's just to be sure you have some good thermal dissipation.
What size star bits are you using on the black screws toward the end
Is he heating it up and then letting it cool down on there? I only have a gas fire cooker
awsome dude thats a cool way of fixing the error
Anyone watching this today, remember this is only a temp fix, if that. Removing the X-clamps and installing bolts is NEVER a good idea. It warps the board. Re-balling it on the stove or in the oven is also hit or miss.
The problem with the 360 wasn't bad solder or weak X-clamps, it was a manufacturing defect within the GPU chip itself.
