      Well, how can I say this? In the USA and in that state, it is probably justified but I can assure you that the same situation in my country would not end with the lady being shot and if she did, it would not be seen as justified, not by the people, not by the court of law.
      Of course, that is irrelevant as it did not happen here.

    I'm sorry, but if you have a family member who's suffering from a "mental illness" that causes them to attack people with butcher knives, than your family member should be in a mental health institution, not living in a regular house.
    edit - For all you in the comment section who are about as mentally acute as her AFTER her run in with this cop, you're saying stupid things like "This was probably her first ever psychotic break" you're idiots. If this had been her fist snap, then her family wouldn't say she has a history of mental illness. You don't say someone is mentally ill, if they don't have a history of being crazy.

      I agree, however she was not a minor child but an adult. As such and as the system works if she was taken in for a mental evail that is either a 24 or 72hr hold. As an adult no familly member could have checked her into an institution. I highly doubt familly was over to this residence for Easter dinner. But iam curious as to if they called in a welfare check for her or if this lady called LEO on herself wanting to suicide by cop. All valid questions that are not covered in this less than 2 minute video.

      How do you think people get IN TO a mental health institution? By having someone bring them there. Having someone de-escalate or physically restrain the individual. A taser would have crippled her in an instant, or they could have gotten the knife when she threw it the first time instead of letting her pick up the knife again. Cops panic, all they are taught is brute force. They get like maybe 1 day of mental health training in their 3 month police training. These should not be the people that respond to mental health crisises. I've dealt with acutely ill psychotic people before, for about 8 years. Weapons, assaults, etc. Never once did I feel I needed a gun or to kill someone in order to resolve the situation. You are there to protect mentally ill people from themselves and others, not to execute them in the middle of a psychosis. This just seemed like panicking and lack of quick thinking.

    For the "why no taser?" arguments: If you've studied the use of force continuum, you never meet the subject's force with less force, it is always equal, or a step up. In this case, the woman came at the cop with a knife. This is considered lethal force. A taser is considered non lethal. Also, tasers are not 100% reliable anyway, and when you only have one shot, it's completely useless. If the officers chose to fire the taser, and missed, the female could have easily charged him/her and stabbed either one numerous times. and of course once she is attacking someone at close quarters with a knife, that would make the shot much harder to make. This is an unfortunate situation, but is a good example of proper use of force.

What if she had missed the shot with the taser? What happens if it just didn't work? What happens if the prongs got stuck on the persons clothes?

    I am diagnosed with several mental illnesses. Its a tragic situation, but she came out of that door swinging a knife. Evening if I was having a manic episode, or a meltdown, and I pick up a knife and start swinging for getting my door knocked on... As horrible as it is, this one looks pretty open and shut. And having trained in knife, yes, she DID have to shoot. A knife is more deadly than a gun if the knife holder is close and swings first.

      It's sad she didn't get the help she needed. It's a very complicated situation in a "free" country. I do think society needs to do better. There's little to no funding for this aside from jails and prisons. They closed down mental institutions during the Reagan era but even before that, treatment typically fell short for someone like this. I know a bit about the situation from personal experience. People tend to judge others with mental illness, thinking they have the same "free will" that a normal person has. It boils down to taking money from one program and giving it to another. Mental illness is reaching crisis proportions.

      @@MikeMitchellishere You can be dying in your living room and say no to the paramedics and HIPPA laws say they have to leave you there and go about their business, unless a court mandated it, her not getting help could very well have been just her saying no and they couldn't touch her. Only in very rare cases could they take anybody against their will.

    • @MikeMitchellishere
      @MikeMitchellishere 6 месяцев назад

      @@giantmess4335 this is largely true, though if someone is presenting as a danger to themselves or others, they can actually take you. I don't know this woman's background, so I won't speculate. I know how difficult it is to force someone to get help, even when they want it, much less when they don't. Even when someone wants help, precious little is available, and it only lasts as long as the money to pay for it does. On the one hand, I wish it were less complicated to get someone like this the help they need; on the other hand, I respect freedom of choice. Perhaps we need to focus our efforts on the confluence of kindness and personal freedom.
