Are Pride Flags Free to Use? 🏳️‍🌈

  • Do businesses pay to use Pride flag designs? Usually no, except in the case of the Progress Pride Flag, designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018. The design represents the evolving 2SLGBTQ+ community, with chevrons symbolizing moving forward. And it's super popular. But the Progress Pride flag falls under a Creative Commons license. Anyone is free to use it as long as you’re not making money off it. If a business is trying to profit from it … then the rules change. Daniel has set up a tiered system to get compensation for their work. By their discretion smaller businesses can usually use it for free. But big companies need to get permission and negotiate a license. It's unclear how much Daniel has made from this tiered system. On their personal site it shows commissioned work plus collabs…. even with Lyft and DC Comics. Now, the traditional rainbow flag is free for anyone to use. It’s part of the public domain. Some people think the Progress Pride Flag should also be public domain, to be used freely. Others think the artist should be able to make money, especially from big corporations that profit from Pride.

I think the tiered system was absolutely the way to go, and huge props to Daniel for that.
It let's individuals and small businesses have access to something they identify with free of charge or with a lesser charge, but kinda encourages big companies to think twice about using such an important symbol. In addition, the artist gets paid AS HE DESERVES TO!
I really like the ethics of that tiered system.

Tbh I never understood the point of the flag with that arrow. The original flag is better because sometimes less is more. I’ve heard that the arrow is for representation in the areas of the community that are not represented in the regular flag but how is that possible since the entire point of a rainbow is that it includes the entire spectrum of visible light so the regular flag already covers everybody

Also, im pretty sure that a rainbow is just a rainbow, but now some people say that a rainbow always represents the LGBTQ which isn't true.

    • @nicokelly6453

It doesn’t really “ignore” that. One purpose of the progress flag is being EXPLICIT about inclusion. Yes, anyone is technically included in the rainbow, but transphobes and racists exist in the LGBTQ community, too, and it’s a challenge sometimes finding safe LGBTQ spaces away from them. No flag guarantees a person is genuinely inclusive, but in my experience, the people excluding trans people and qpoc really hate the progress flag and will pick the rainbow flag instead. After all, if you advocate for trans people to be excluded, you don’t usually want to use a flag that explicitly marks their inclusion with the trans flag colors.
That doesn’t mean rainbow flag = bigot-all varieties of people use the rainbow flag, including me. But I’m a believer that while words and symbols aren’t actions (using a flag doesn’t mean you’re erasing transphobia or racism in the lgbtq community), they still mean something.
The other thing about it is that the creator of the rainbow flag regretted not making it copyrighted in any way, because corporations made huge profits off it while the creator lived in poverty and got nothing. The creator of the progress flag wanted corporations to actually pay LGBTQ creatives for the flag.

I like the tiered system a lot.
I think the artist deserves to make money- I’m an artist myself and would want to make money off of work like that. I also think a lot of that money should be going directly back into the LGBTQ community via charities, helping fund pride events, etc.
Like the artist deserves a portion of it for creating it, but the only reason anybody should privately ‘own’ it to the point of being able to give permission to use it, is so big corporations can’t just just use it for free.
Idk how businesses or owning something like that works but if there was a way to set it up where someone was more of a ‘manager’ of the permissions and how much people should be paying, and less of a direct ‘owner’ of the thing, that would be ideal.
Just a general, legally-binding, “x% of funds earned from the pride progress flag must be, in some way, shape, or form, returned to the LGBTQ community.” Kind of thing.

I think that companies should be under more scrutiny than just if they have decoration and if they pay for it. They need to be actively working to be more inclusive and contribute to pride and protest movements. Otherwise it’s just another marketing “season” for them.
“Commercial use” of a work doesn’t usually refer to decorating your place of business, it refers to selling items with the work included, so still seeing it used as bunting is no guarantee the right dues are being paid.
That said, it’s a creative work and the author is completely in their rights to exercise their copyrights and assign licenses by the means they see fit

Shouldn't be making money off this type of thing, period. In my opinion trying to normalize being different in loving yourself aswell as others is not something people should be making money off of. It's making money off of people pain and hardship to get recognized. Especially considering most businesses using it don't actually support the minorities at all. Any money made from such a thing should be automatically for donating to minority supporting charities. Not only would that allow for proper continuous support, but also stops turning us into product to profit from, cause we are human not Characters in a story or show to promote. It is also supporting the crazy idea that these people turn younger beings into "a gay" as others say.

I think people should stop using that ugly flag, there’s nothing wrong with the normal one🏳️‍🌈, and a flag for trans people already exists 🏳️‍⚧️, and the black and brown thing should have never happened, the rainbow flag is about being gay, a cross cultural experience and the rainbow was already set to represent everyone already.

POC are one of the big reasons The lgbtqia+ community is what it is today, trans poc in particular, they were a huge part of a lot of movements that earned us rights. The rainbow flag is great, but when people see it they mostly think of homosexuality, not gender identities. The extra stripes are there out of respect and recognition of the WHOLE community, not just what people think of first. By respecting the people who fought for our rights before us, we respect ourselves as well. No one loses in that, the progressive pride flag is arguably better representation than the rainbow flag.
