damn it's so obvious when idols care about their image and when theyre just being themselves and having fun, not sure if it's something with the company (which people often criticize for their marketing) and like...if you support anyone, just support them, you don't need to compare them to anyone else. Advocating for those you support and comparing them to "more popular" groups are NOT the same thing.
Companies are key elements. Everything related to idols is slightly different from the traditional music industry. In the normal industry a group if amateur has to convince a Label to sell its music under their umbrella, if they're already "Stars" then it's the Label who wants to convince the musicians to sign with them, and it's in both cases all about projection to reach wider markets. However, it's not a requisite for a group to have any contract with a Music Company to be able to compose their music, play their instruments and sing their songs or find some modest stages to perform like festivals, public events and pubs. In the "idol music" instead, companies are everything. They provide the concepts, the music, the stages and even the group members. Idol groups are like their products. If the company cares about its employees then no harm is done and they can have voice for decision making, it the company only wants to take advantage as much as possible, then there are all the sad histories from ex-idols.
lol i don't compare it any means to "the west" I have worked with idols and their companies in SKor because I do events and marketing for some SKor beauty and pharmaceutical brands, and I also service some global brands based in the western world. I know there are great companies now started by idols themselves. Idk what your point is, but my point here is - Brave gets a lot of flak for why Brave Girls took this long to get popular, or why DKB is "underrated" and "slept on" - but the way these ones are managed, at least in my view, is quite different - esp even with the failed and now continuing attempts to debut members who don't fit the kpop stereotype + the amount of freedom and image management pressure these groups seem to have, versus other players in the industry
