    My first synth ... the 106! I had a problem suppressing my desire for the new digital sounding keys and longed for synth that could make every desirable permutation of movie soundscapes. Had no money but eventually got a DX-7 FD2. The Yamaha was too scientific for my creative wanderings so my first love has a special place in my heart. 'Thankful that my VR-09 has shades of the 106.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  6 лет назад +3

      Hi, Buzz, in my opinion, the 60 would perhaps be a tiny bit better for those bands/genres (which I love myself!), but really, the two are quite similar. The 106 has MIDI and portamento but doesn't have arpeggiator, which was often used in those genres - although every DAW today has an arpeggiator feature so it's not a huge deal; the 60 doesn't have portamento nor MIDI, but you can retrofit MIDI to it, or get a DCB-to-MIDI interface

    I fell in love with the sound of these synths, just amazing and really nicely played. Which one of these would you recommend the most I think I will buy one but if they are different enough maybe get both. If you only had to choose one which would it be and why? They both have patch memory? And if so does that make the 60 less good sounding than Juno 6 for instance since then there is no digital controlled parts of the synth itself or that does not matter in that regard?

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  3 года назад +1

      They're currently worth around the same amount on the used market, so if you're asking if it makes sense from a financial standpoint, it's a neutral. But the 800 is a pcm-based digital synth while the 106 is mainly an analog synth, so if you're asking from a features point of view, it depends on which types sounds you prefer to have.

    Hi Paolo. I have a question. was it common for italo disco to use Delay on the bass lines? also, what other delays of the era could you recommend. thank you.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  7 лет назад

      On the bass I wouldn't think it was that common? Although as you know, in music there are no rules :-D so if it sounds good, it sounds good ;-) Certainly lots of delay in synth lead, chords, comps etc, though - you can get any analog delay or preferably tape echo, but I think also any digital DDL from the 80-86 period is just perfect, from cheapies like those one-rack Ibanez/Sony to mega-expensive ones like the AMS 15-80, but even something very digital like any of the Roland SDE will do the trick.... even better if your digital delay has modulation - I recently got the Lexicon PCM41 and I'm really curious to try it out with the Italo sound, I'll make a video about it

    • @devicefactor2290
      @devicefactor2290 7 лет назад

      SynthMania awesome. that's crazy, because I was just considering the pcm 41. so I'd like to hear what you come up with. I have wondered how often the space echo might've been used (by any italo artists)?? and I've heard alot about the bel bd80. I really like the space echo, especially if i venture into tangerine dream type of sound, for that really warm saturation. I'll look into the others. I was asking because it seems on this video that the delay is added to the bass lines. and I tried adding a tad with pro tools And it sounds decent, so I wasn't sure if that is what you did here,or not. but it sounds great either way ; )

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  7 лет назад +1

      Ah, gotcha :) For this video it looks like I had the delay running on both keys, and since I changed from one to the other and viceversa to play bass line and chords, the delay stayed there on both parts ;) This is just a quick demo done live, but the "rule of thumb" with bass parts is that since low frequencies are omni and can wreak havoc in a mix is to make it mono and fairly dry (although often people in the '80s put chorus on it too or run it into Unison mode or through ensemble/symphonic effects) - then again, there are no rules in music, if it sounds good, it sounds good! :-) The Bel sounds really, really good, I had a chance to hear it at my friend's studio - he is an effect guru! You simply cannot go wrong with a Space Echo or any tape echo, they sound so good. Yes, I'll definitely make an Italo track with the PCM41 soon

    • @devicefactor2290
      @devicefactor2290 7 лет назад

      SynthMania alrighty : ) thank you Paolo. what I understand is to add delay you'd just end up adding more unnecessary frequencies to the mix. makes sense. I'm going to get a tape echo. and I'll add a bd80 later and maybe a pcm 41, once the master (you) lol generously provides a demo. have a good evening friend.

    I'm a really huge fan of the Juno 60, especially cause the Sound is just amazing wonderfull and warm,
    but I think the Juno 106 doesnt have real Charakter,
    for me it sounds kinda cold

    I do love Clip #2! Could sound very mid 90's trancey if you sped up the BPM and slapped some 909's or bouncy kick drums. ;)
