37:31.. "It was a revenge company. I got these guys to pay me for the things they sued me for." I love Travis K. The guy is polarizing. And he's brilliant. The lesson then and especially now with Uber: there is power in being hellbent. Before the product, before everything-it's about the founder and his freaking soul.
I remember when I first came across this video over 10 years ago, so inspirational. Thank you Jason for always putting up great content, would love to meet you one day!
The host and Travis are friends and business partners which probably explains the interruptions. It’s Jason’s style, if you listen to him often, you get used to it.
1:01:20 Wow you grew up poor and made it this far? Not a silver spoon story. You have even more respect from me Jason. Love you shows. Keep it up and thanks for the free knowledge and great content.
Wow what a video! You can tell the idea for Uber Eats was already on his mind. Simply Incredible. I wonder if Travis wants to expand to do weed delivery... bet he has already thought of it.
Uber replaces the yellow cab, which is frequently a horrible experience where you the customer feel like you are at the mercy of companies and drivers who don’t care about your needs. To understand how amazing Uber is, you have to start by examining the yellow cab experience: The Problem with TAXIS & Cabs in the U.S. If you order a cab by phone… When you call, you are invariably placed on hold and put into some kind of queue of indeterminate length. You have no idea when you are going to be picked up by a live person. Once you reach the booking operator, yes they will confirm that a car is on its way, but they won’t tell you when the car will arrive. The booking operator is often rude; in my experience, the operator usually hangs up brusquely before you even have a chance to ask when the car will arrive. After you’ve booked your car, you have no way of knowing whether the cab will show up at all, and you certainly have no idea how close the cab is. If you feel that your cab is late, you’re generally in a helpless position; it’s usually a waste of time to call the cab company back to check on your cab, because they have no patience for you and frequently don’t have any idea where the car is. If you try to hail a cab outside… Often times, cabs aren’t available when you want them and you have no idea how long you have to wait before a cab becomes available. Especially in cities, you have to work hard to get a cab, walking from intersection to intersection, sometimes competing with other people to hail a cab. It’s exhausting, anxiety-provoking (because you’re worried you won’t get to where you need to go on-time), and humiliating. Cab drivers have complete control over whether or not they pick you up. Do you look weird or dangerous to the driver? Are you not going where they want to go? They can just decide, screw you, I don’t want to pick you up. Once you are in a taxi or cab… The car is sometimes dirty - both the interior and the trunk. My experience is that this is true about 1/3 of the time. Drivers are often rude and/or don’t know how to get around your city. During the ride, drivers often spend much of the ride talking on their cell phones. This is both annoying and dangerous. If the driver is bad (rude, unethical, drives poorly), you basically have no recourse - no way to provide feedback to a central service or complain. The minute the driver leaves, they know that they will never see you again. The paying experience at the end of your ride is cumbersome and often mildly stressful. You have to fumble for your wallet while pulled over, sometimes on a crowded street, sometimes with kids that you need to deal with. Uber solves every one of these problems. Ordering an Uber car is awesome (actually it’s fun) and super-easy. You do it on your phone. You pinpoint where your location is, and before you order the car, Uber tells you how many minutes away an available car is. Once you order, you have 90+% confidence that the car will be there when it says it will be there. In other words, with Uber, there is zero uncertainty about cab availability or arrival time. Waiting for the Uber car to get there… Waiting for your Uber car to arrive is really fun and satisfying - like having a dedicated car service, but a lot better. For one thing, while you are waiting, you can look at the Uber app on your phone and see exactly where your car is located and how their progress is going to get to your location. If you want to talk to the driver, you can click the phone icon and you’ll immediately dial them up. The driver always answers quickly and calls you by your name. You can use the phone to give the driver more color about your location You can use the phone to coordinate if there is any confusion on the driver’s part - just like ordering a private car service, but even better because you can see the driver on a live, interactive map! Driving in the Uber car… The Uber car itself is usually super-nice and immaculately clean. They are black town cars or spacious SUVs. svn now they have a low cost cheaper UberX which reenforce the existing fleet especially on rush time so you will never have to wait or wonder . i was amazed when i ordered an uberX and within 5 minutes a 2014 black Camry hybrid show up the cost of the trip was $5 ……Amazing isn't The back seats are super-clean. The drivers are nice and friendly and always have an iPhone that they use to help get to your destination. After your Uber ride is over… Payment is seamless - you don’t fumble for your wallet or cash/credit cards. Instead, you are automatically billed, and you see your bill right after the ride ends. The Uber driver review experience is empowering and makes you feel in control as the customer. Immediately after your ride ends, you are prompted by the Uber app to review the driver. I usually give 5 stars, but if there was any problem with the ride, I give fewer stars and explain why. This Uber reporting / review system imposes accountability on the drivers and incents them to provide good service. In the handful of situations where I’ve given bad reviews to drivers, an Uber customer service rep has always followed up by email, so I know that my review matters. This whole system makes me think that someone is watching out for me and that drivers are motivated to do a good job and not screw me. All people i knew who use Uber love the app too uber is awesome very cheap rate and WAY better than cabs . Drivers are always close, super friendly, and really prompt. Service is affordable, as well. Couldn't be happier with uberX, and they really fun Has a great time using uber for the first time! Driver was very friendly and came promptly. My total was $24 but everything was waived since I had a promo code and it was my first time. I tried taking lyft on the way home and it was terrible! Overcharged by $35 because of the shady driver who claimed I asked for an hour long ride when it was only 20minutes. We love UBER because: 1. UBER is way cheaper than a DUI 2. we feel less homicidal riding in UBER cars than driving in our own car in city . traffic 3. UBER arrives within minutes of being called 4. UBER drivers are way less weird and creepy than taxi drivers 5. NO cash is exchanged Service is affordable, as well. Couldn't be happier with uberX, and they really fun . HERE IS A $25 CREDIT CODE : z5ju9h this code is valid for first time UBER users only existing user may not be able to use it Enter this code z5ju9h In the payment section before you request your FIRST ride and. you will receive a $20 credit towards that ride .. The credit is valid on first ride so use it for a long ride to get the best value. Great community. Never take a taxi again… Go for Uber you will never ever be desappointed :)
watching this 2011 video in jan 2016 in Mumbai, a day before Modi launches the Start up India policy. Uber is beautiful. The first time I used it randomly on the street, the car was across the road. An AC car in literally seconds. It was beautiful.
man, with travis still in the company and without these crazy regulations everywhere, uber would be so awesome today. i am from europe and in so many cities around europe uber can't operate in the way it intends to do. it's honestly very sad, you just order expensive taxis via app, wow, well done government!
Oh I get it! When he mentions "on demand lifestyle" its like the next evolutionary step of peer to peer technology, instead of files being shared its services and products that are peer to peer, lol....
That's the additional amount of money that the acquirer offers as a "bonus", so to speak, for the top execs and talent at the company being acquired to stay on for a few years. So in this case, the company was sold for 19 and there was 4-5 on the table if Travis & friends stayed on and hit additional milestones
Consider if you were a building contractor incorporated, licensed and insured. You collected your employees witholding, matched their FICA,and paid workers compensation insurance. You had to buy building permits, conform to local codes and be inspected by building inspectors and OSHA.Would you think it fair for some jackleg, fly by night competitor working out of his truck and doing none of these things was operating in your community?
This guy's podcast ads is the least effective marketing i've ever seen. Awful completely disrupts the flow. Might as well just put ads for this crap on porn sites
Investors making a killing, employees working at the most valuable private startup, companies that are using and will use Otto, engineers working on some of the first shipped self driving vehicles out there, drivers that have been able to make a living by just driving there car without a Medallion tax (which itself should have been done away with a long time ago).. oh and me, riding.
I think this Jason guy is quite biased and not so much of a businessman. Wish this detailed interview was conducted by someone else like Joe Rogan or something
jeez you guys been doing this podcast for 10 years? wow! not gonna lie i didnt like jason before as he used to complain about rocket internet guys alot and i though Jason wasnt seeing the big picture when it came to cloning ideas around the world. Thankfully he seems to understand it or be more accepting of it now. It would be like attacking every company that competed with uber
+lorence donaldo "unfair business practices?" that's what business is alllll about. You don't get what u deserve in life, you get what u negotiate for-business.

TIP (cause Travis won't) your driver, they're better at conversation !
It would have been amazing to have Travis on the All-In Besties Podcast.
it would be interesting
@Matthew Thomas-erwin why wouldn't he? tf you think chamath & Elon Musk are?
He's finally here in the All in Summit
@@KshitizDatta Yes, indeed!

I'm watching this after seeing the first episode of super pumped and it's crazy to see how well they portrayed Travis in the show
now just think about the kind of guy jason must be to worship him the way he does
Crazy interview. Best Travis interview out there; forever and all time.
Very interesting watching this in 2023
i have been watching this interview since 2011 and it never gets old. golden age 🔥🔥
Jason’s interruptions especially around the 40-50 min mark are absolutely brutal
It's crazy watching this in 2016 with the size of Uber now
51 billion or so
It's crazy watching this in 2017 with Travis resigning as CEO of Uber.
It's crazy watching this in 2019 with the size of Uber IPO, led by another CEO.
It's crazy watching this now that Travis is worth billions of dollars.
it's crazy now in 2020 when uber has run out of money and Tesla is taking over
HD is soooo retroooo - funny to hear them talking about it in the future tense.
I remember when I first came across this video over 10 years ago, so inspirational. Thank you Jason for always putting up great content, would love to meet you one day!
Uncle Sam sent us here 🤙🏾
Me 2🤙🏽
Who is Uncle Sam?

Travis Kalanick is a genius.

Hey, Travis mentions the three comma club. I thought that phrase was invented for the show Silicon Valley ;)
Russ hahahaha

Here after watching Super Pumped!
Im halfway through this, this video is awesome! How did I not know about this guy earlier?
Wow what a video! You can tell the idea for Uber Eats was already on his mind. Simply Incredible. I wonder if Travis wants to expand to do weed delivery... bet he has already thought of it.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt did an amazing job playing Travis Kalanick in Super Pumped!
That lawsuit and the death threat was his preparation for Uber
Haha Travis is awesome. One of our favorite TWiST eps!
Jason talks too much and rudely interrupts his guests. I like Jason but, I think he needs to let his guest speak more without being interrupted
Ten years later, Jason hasn’t changed..
1:15:00 discussion of Uber Eats functionality. 8 years later they are dominating the space.
How about now?
Wow... this interviewer ruined the interview. let us hear your guest!!!!
1:10:36 The idea for Uber Eats is first mentioned. Genius!!
The interviewer interrupts Travis Kalanick too much.
mamobster1500 dat one drunk guy at the party lmao
i wish the host would shut up and let him speak..damn!!
What! He's the best, he's hilarious, and has the best guests.
Uhhhaaaa
Final number for Travis on Uber: 1. You are fired. 2. $2.7b richer.
Final number for J. C. invested in Uber for $25k in seed round: $417 mil cash return after 9 yrs in last year.
lol you are ignorant

"Jason tells about when he realized Uber was a $1B company." he was only off by a factor of 80x
Such an interesting guy!
Great interview. what percentage of Uber did you get for your investment?
@26:25 The best segway into a commercial ever!

Oh I get it! When he mentions "on demand lifestyle" its like the next evolutionary step of peer to peer technology, instead of files being shared its services and products that are peer to peer, lol....
Well UBER EATS was a success
Fascinating
Jason has been doing this for a really long time
In 41:36 , what does he mean when he said incentive was “4 or 5”? Does it mean that he makes 5 million out of 19 million?
That's the additional amount of money that the acquirer offers as a "bonus", so to speak, for the top execs and talent at the company being acquired to stay on for a few years. So in this case, the company was sold for 19 and there was 4-5 on the table if Travis & friends stayed on and hit additional milestones
48:35.. such a boss!
Had a party did he, well then we're all coming on Labor Day, we'll bring tents, hope the bathrooms are accessible and he makes a lot of food.
Stop f**king cutting the guy off and let him speak for crying out loud lol
I enjoyed this episode, I will be watching.
“I think this is your billion dollar company” wow

This is amazing. I thought someone was trolling at first.
Would you let him speak ?

Daniel ek founder of spotify
Soooooo you want to be rich? That's allowed, Powerful and rich; now that's a fraternity. Under 20M your ok.. sort of.
This guy's podcast ads is the least effective marketing i've ever seen. Awful completely disrupts the flow. Might as well just put ads for this crap on porn sites

the CEO is the only one smiling sincerely in Uber. everyone else is faking it.

Oh, so Jason angel invested in Uber?😅
This dude and his company just make a new trend of exploitation.
The third dude looks like the cheap version of Daniel Ek
I think this Jason guy is quite biased and not so much of a businessman. Wish this detailed interview was conducted by someone else like Joe Rogan or something

This is unwatchable, this guy interrupts every 5 seconds
No such thing as 'left brain / right brain' ..
Why do you say so? Is that just a theory?
the interviewer is obnoxious.
this guy should be sued for unfair business practices.
