  • Every now and then, I get the question: "Do I need to download all 230GB of data when purchasing Superior Drummer 3 from Toontrack?" - Well, though it needs a lot of space on your hard disk drive and will take some time, it'll increase your sound options massively! In this video, I show you a few example on how to take advantage of all the additional room mics - and that you literally don't need reverb any more.

    I love all the room mics. I use a little sliver of each pair in most of my tracks, crush the shit out of the centre mono mic and then blend in my close mics for punch, attack and definition. I’ve spent 30 years as a drummer and traditional engineer, but I find myself regularly running drum performances through SD3 these days. No amount of experience gives me the chance or budget to record in these world class studios. This is the closest I can get. Can’t complain.

    i'm looking into getting either Superior Drummer 3 or EZ Drummer 2 - i'm a guitar player that's building a small home studio and i just need great drum sounds that will be triggered by a Roland V drum kit - what would you recommend? i'm using a UA Apollo X16 interface and Pro Tools - thanks

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  4 года назад +1

      Hi Neddi, thanks for checking out. Well, depends on your budget. Do you play the drums yourself or do you set that kit up for drummers to record in your studio? I'd always go for SD3 for two reasons: 1. It's the industry standard drum software with endless flexibility and 2. you can buy and use EZDrummer2 itself and any expansion for EZDrummer2 within Superior Drummer 3, but not vice versa. You use an Apollo interface and Pro Tools, which shows me you know how to record and to mix - then Superior Drummer 3 is the software to go for you.

    Great explanation and demonstration, as always, Mike! I have a question: if I do download the whole 230GB, but decide to use only a few basic room mics in a sketchy project, say, can I do that? Do I just delete the channels that I don't need in the mixer and/or deactivate some bleed? Thanks!

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Adrian, thank you! All those additional room mics are disabled by default (just one pair of room mics is active). You can even hide all unused room mics when you don’t need them, so it’s quiet convenient to use.

    • @adrianmanea
      @adrianmanea 6 лет назад +1

      Great, thanks for the quick reply! One more thing, I just had a look at your gear. Would you say your LaCie Thunderbolt external drive is fast enough to load those tens of gigabytes in reasonable time? I now have a Samsung External SSD, with USB 3 interface and it's getting full. But I'm quite short on the money for an external SSD, so I was wondering whether a HDD with Thunderbolt is "acceptable".

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад +1

      Well, I don't know what's "acceptable" for you, at the end it's personal perception. It takes some seconds to load the kit, depends on the kit itself, of course. I was never into the game of chasing every second or loading time. My Thunderbolt takes, I don't know, maybe 10 seconds to load a 1GB kit into RAM. An SSD may take 3-4 seconds less. It's a personal decision if someone is willing to pay the double price for a few seconds.
      The 230GB are the full installation. When using, you usually need something between 800MB and 4-5GB, if you use a lot of room mics and bleeding.

    Hi Mike. What if I just want to use other libraries such as Music City USA. which was made in a different studio, with different drum kits, different mics and different mic placements. Do I still need to install that 230gb part? which I think doesn't make sense because all the audio in the factory contents (Room mics, extra bleed etc.) were just from the drum kits of the Core Library. Correct me if wrong. Thanks. Nice and informative video by the way.

    It's enough to install first download with library and some room mic and oh and maybe the last one with more bleed, otherwise you might loose too much time with tweaking around, there is not just drums in a production. If you made a song consisting of drums only, adding so much room might be ok. But this huge amount of room will not give much space for other instruments. If I got a wav file of these drums, I would first use a de-reverb or transient designer to get rid of the room sound. It does not make sense to record "studio drums" for production in a large room, chambers and small rooms are for drums.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  4 года назад +1

      Hi Naji, well, I think this is a decision everyone can make on their own. I use those ambience channels rather often and there are a lot of occasions when you need more ambience. Not every drum sound in every song is about just a pair of room mics in a small studio. It’s about having options. And this software is not only used by common musicians who record and produce common music, but also for film composers, advertisers ... just to name a few.

  • @MichaelJohnsonProductions

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Michael, thanks. It's a matter of having options, simple as that. Usually I suggest to purchase an additional external hard disk as they are way cheaper - so all drum samples are stored externally. That's the way I do it, it's convenient to use.

    Why not just send your snares and toms to a tight room reverb instead of using so much disk space and ram to do it via superior drummer. All you are adding is a real room. I guess if one has made the leap to buy superior drummer, this is one of the things that one can say "justifies" the purchase. But is that really worth the extra ram, $$, and hard disk space?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  Год назад +1

      It’s just about having options. A real room very often sounds more natural than an artificial reverb of any kind. In the end, it’s all about personal taste. It’s not mandatory to use it.
      In the end, Superior Drummer is more than just a drum sample software to create common drum mixes.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад +2

      Hi, well ...it depends on the whole mix, of course. The drums are at least a good starting point. The George Massenburg presets are more or less „cleaned“ versions of the default kits. I assume you‘d need to spend some more time on the processing. But there are tons of other presets included, the majority are mix-ready presets. Would you recommend to get a computer with 1TB internal SSD and have all the 230GBs of SD3 samples on the internal drive... or maybe get a computer with just 256GB internal SSD (which I'd use for the OS, softwares like Logic, FInal Cut, Photoshop, all the plugins etc...) and then use external SSD drives for SD3 and to save all the files/sessions? • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  2 года назад

      Hey Chris, thanks for reaching out! Well, I can just share my thoughts, in the end it'll be your decision, of course. But you might want to consider the following: Usually and based on my experiences you'll probably upgrade your arsenal with some expansion packs, which often have several GBs of data, too. So by storing everything internally, you'll quickly run into a situation in which your internal SSD is full and then you'll parts of SD3 internally and some other libraries externally. This works technically, but it's a mess. Hence I went the second path: I purchased a 1TB external SSD which exclusively contains all Toontrack libraries. Additionally, buying external SSD is usually cheaper than Apple's ridiculous pricing on internal SSD.

    the big room doesnt necessarily mean that its better, especially when it comes to drum sound. I find sd3 lib not very usable because of the room. The shells sound amazing but the room decay is too long for that explosive rock sound. and its a headache when it comes to fast parts. yes you can shorten the decay but it still does not sound like another room sadly.

      Thanks for your comment. Well, it's about having options. It's always easier to have a big room and then bring all the ambience mics down (just using the Overheads, e.g.) instead of having a small room where you need to add artificial reverb. Of the the room determines the overall sound, so I understand Toontrack went into such a big room for their core library. However, there are some expansions for Superior Drummer where you can take advantage of smaller rooms: Progressive Foundry, Indiependent or Custom & Vintage.
      For having explosive sounds on drum shells, I usually don't care about the ambience, I achieve that with compression.

      Well I was talking about the room size mainly, mid sized reflective rooms are perfect for drums as the room is half of the drum sound in my opinion, so I like my rooms loud and fully featured. But yes for the dry 70s sound SD3 is grerat. I actually own the older expansions and prog sdx is a great eximple of a tight rock sound - not too small, not too big. Great lib. I just prefer the sound of those classic drum rooms they have recorded in previously (avatar, hit factory, sound kitchen, columbia, etc etc). SD3 ambience sounds like a cavern to me, and when you compress a room with a tail that long it becomes too mushy because all the stacked reverb tails and it becomes really noisy and undefined.

      the pros of the library is that it was recorded rather soft, unlike the older libraries that are very limited in this regard. I like that its not all rimshots like the others

      I got your points. When you look at all drum sample softwares (Addictive Drums 2, SSD4, BFD3) ... there is no perfect software. Honestly, if I had to pick just one library, I'd still go for the Avatar studios, I still love the NY Vol. 3 expansion. And the Rock Warehouse Studios are stunning. But again, it's about having options.

      avatar is nice but its all rimshots and not much else unfortunately. the kicks sounding weirdly strange aswell. but the ambience is fantastic

    it is achievable with 2 or 3 different reverbs, short, mid, long.

    it does nothing for the problem that sd3 audio output is far too low in volume compared to any other drum vst- basically a waste of....everything

      What do you mean? You can turn the output up or down. I always have to turn it down. Sounds like you might have a gain problem with the rest of your tracks.
