    Here are some sorrowsworn I came up with
    The Desperate (recklessness and paranoia caused by urgency and despair)- a small nimble fast creature that runs at top speed towards just about anything it perceives as Ethier food, escape or something familiar. It constantly uses reckless attack and if it goes without damaging something its next attack deals extra damage and it can dash as a bonus action to show it is desperate to catch the target.
    The Obsessed- It does not stop chasing one specific target ignoring everything else until it catches it or it dies. As a bonus action it can choose a specific target and it gains advantage on attacks on that target, deals extra damage and knows the exact distance and direction of its target. However it gains disadvantage on attack against other creatures and disadvantage on tracking anything else.

      Abused: This sorrowsworn at first mannifests in form of a naked, sexless and emaciated child covered in scars and wounds, with eyes leaking black tears. It's main target are adventurers with evil or chaotic alignment, especially if they have killed innocent or harmed other people unprovoked before arriving to Shadowfell. When Abused mannifests, it goes only after it's specific target, leaving adventurers with good aligment alone.
      More target tries to fight back, stronger the abused grows. Turning the damage recieved from its enemy, abused grows bigger and stronger. In its base form Abused has sharp claws and great agility bur once its receives enough damage, it will grow in power, I already mentioned. After growing in strength, it begins to resemble less a child and more of a grotesque fusion of Re4 Regenerator (with its grayish skin, sharp teeth and glowing eyes) and Smiling Titan from Attack on Titan with bruises, scars and festering wounds covering its body and messy hair, well except for instead of smiling it's always frowning and crying blood. And maybe long arms compared to its body, similar to Shy Guy from SCP?
      As I said before, Abused grows in strengh and size when damaged and in its maximum can reach 9 feet in height. Only way to destroy the Abused is by hand of pc or npc with lawful good aligment and who hasn't killed innocents. Also, wounds inflicted such a character won't give the Abused its power boost. Like, sorry man but if you have commited DnD sins that inspire stories in RPG Horror Stories - subReddit, you will never be able to kill this thing. If you manage to roll nat 20 to defend themself or fight back in any way, Abused actually gets a TRIPLE in its damage-based power boost. Even if you manage use something like wish spell to wish it gone.... well abused can actually cease to exist. HOWEVER, if your party managed to kill the Abused or wish it away, I can still always come back if you roll Nat 1 for anything and anywhere in Shadowfell. Even wishing the Abused to be permanently gone wont help, althought you evil character has to roll maybe three Nat 1s in order to Abused to return.
      Like a revenant , it will pursue its prey relentlesly, and it will always know its victim's location
      Oh, and if you have more than one evil or chaotic adventurer in your band, who have all killed random people before arriving to Shadofell, Abused will the target multiple players, also meaning that if party is full of murderhobos.... well, I suggest to you to get the hell out from Shadowfell

      @CheshireFatorum 4 года назад +24

      Thing is, they can't really decide what they want to do with the Shadowfell.
      The Feywild is described as "life in overdrive", where every whim becomes a passion and emotions quickly boil over. _All_ emotions, whether joy or rage, compassion or sorrow. In fact, some fey are spawned by emotions, too - redcaps come from bloodthirst, Boggles from loneliness, Meenlocks from fear. The Feywild _already_ does the "emotions spawn monsters" thing, and obviously isn't limited to positive emotions.
      There have been descriptions of the Shadowfell that mirror that, as in, having it subdue all emotions until all that's left is emptiness…
      …but then there's also _this,_ where the Shadowfell suddenly amplifies (only) negative emotions, breaking the symmetry.

  • @Torthrodhel
    @Torthrodhel 4 года назад +58

    I love the concept too. Coming up with a few of my own just because inspiration:
    "the Morbose"
    Resultant of a jealousy of edginess you haven't experienced sufficiently to spoil the attraction of, these silent open-mouthed gargants slide effortlessly along any surface, their dragged legs constantly crunching and reshaping, snapping and reforming to fit the relief they don't seem to actually be in friction with. They won't attack you, but you can choose to do damage to them, to which they react with only a longing gaze. Should you kill one, unbeknownst to you you've actually dispached of yourself and it is now you instead. Slowly you begin to glide around like they do, and soon enough your body contorts to fit the same shape. A good anti-murderhobo, especially if other enemies interested in your demise could perceivably disguise one as something else.
    "the Languid"
    The sneakiest of the bunch, this gormless humanoid lump likes to secretly insert itself into the company of adventuring parties, aimlessly plodding alongside waiting for someone to seem like they aren't caring about what they're doing. At this point it will open up horrifyingly on one side, completely to reveal a gutty mawlike hollow innard (but still entirely silently) and attempt to swallow the listless soul whole. If swallowed, you make saving throws that gradually drain random stats (curable only by major restoration) a point at a time at a rate of one per minute. If you're still aimless and rote, you may not even notice being swallowed in this way as a perception-numbing aura extends around the creature. Should any stat fall to zero, you die. Should you succeed in a saving throw, you wake up to the situation and gain an attack against the creature from inside, escaping if you kill it, going numb again if you don't. Either way, during all of this nobody around you will even know you're in peril unless they are naturally inclined to look back and take notice. So take heed of your fellow adventurers, lest they become took by a false proxy.
    "the Stubborn"
    These wireframes of flesh slivers with translucent force magic panelling that drip with liquid ambition both figuratively and literally manifest in roughly symmetrical spaces a victim is led to by their dogged insistence to follow a singular path no matter the consequence. One will mirror its fixation's motions and dimensions precisely, diverging only should other circumstances in the spacial vicinity force it to scrabble to get back on track. Effectively this translates to every attribute you have, it has twice and everything you do to it happens twofold back at you. You're willing to escalate? Well I'm twice as willing to escalate in return! They can be disencountered entirely by giving up on the goal, or they can be actively defeated by playing with the kinds of self-destructive emotions that might draw other sorrowsworn to seek you out (you're suicidal? well I'm twice as suicidal!). But should you get past one in order to claim the great object of desire it has drawn you toward, you come to realise that the object dies and disintegrates along with it.
    "the Ashamed"
    Bulbous twists of self-torture, these gross visages have tusks that grow into their own eyes, tears that burn trenches in their cheeks, legs and arms joined together so that no matter which way it walks it's always painfully barring a limb, and a spine so thin and bent it barely holds a chucked neck above the jagged spines where chest hair would be expected. Should you encounter one from feeling deep shame at a personal failure, you may expect it a particularly easy foe, if a little cruel to dispatch of. And that individual one may indeed be, but should you do so you will be cursed to feel the same shame after each defeat of another sorrowsworn and compelled to react the same way in killing it, causing more and more to show up each time. The more there are, the less pathetic a challenge they actually pose, behaving as a hive mind, as if one creature. Accumulate enough and you might not make it out alive, and then you will surely feel eternal shame in wherever you end up post-death, having had your life ended by something designed specifically to be more pathetic than anything else. So that villager that warned you to maintain courage and self-assuredness on your adventure wasn't speaking in platitudes after all...

      Aww thanks you guys! As requested...
      "the Slatherous"
      Chasers beware, for from a distance this dribbling murmurer's illusion aura will have you believe it to be the idealised object of your desires, manifested from inappropriateness toward the aim of your real affections. But the closer you get, the more you realise just how horrifying that object actually is, with knees for feet and flattened arms making it look like in a constant worship pose, and a twisted-back reverse head looking up at you from a dipped position. It will thrash and bite at you and anyone allied with you, covered with tiny spines from top to toe that scrape flesh and pierce armor, and keen to shower you with the violent gifts of its own obsession. Any praise heaped on this creature will cause its most devastating attack of all - a spewed stream of rancid acidic bile that overcomes resistance and even reduces immunity. If killed, it curls into a sad ball and regains its distant idealised shape, hardens into marble and cracks into bloodstained pieces.

(You can also plagarize the hell out of it for D&D campaigns, if you don't recommend it to your entire group like I did.)

    I made my own sorrowsworn called "The Anxious". It's basically a big mass of flesh that's paranoid and socially anxious(go figure). It can use it's reaction to attack a talking character and sew its lips shut. You can avoid the fight by staying quiet and end the fight by gagging yourself/casting Silence. It appears in the path of people that have confidence issues, are paranoid or have trouble fitting into the group.

    I do also love the sorrowsworn and im actually playing a homebrew campaign that have then as one of the main enemy.
    And i also think we don't have enough sorrowsworns to make an adventure with then, so i made some for me.
    i made the following ones, based on guilty, tiredness, doubt, fear, sadness, loathing, madness, sickeness, violence and hatred and hypocrisy.
    guilty is a large creature with spider like features, it goes after ppl feeling guilty and if he hits you, he makes you feel so much guilt that you fall prone in front of him. If you do something altruistic in front of him you're immune to his effect and he gets disadvantage.
    tired is almost unmovable creature that causes exaustion if you don't end up moving at least your speed at your turn. If he is forced to move he loses his ability.
    Fear is a thin black humanoid that can locate ppl who are feeling fear and cause the frightened condition, teleport to ppl who are frightened and deal extra damage agaisn't then, if you pass the fear test, it gets disadvantage agains't you.
    doubt is a giant headed humanoid with countless eyes that can use its reaction to make you fail any action you're trying to do, and if you fail anything close to it you get disadvantage while close to it.
    sadness is humanoid who crawls on the ground and causes ppl to fall prone and incapacitaded in despair until they are attacked.
    loathing is a huge bat like creature with a human mouth and no eyes that forces you atyour turn to attack your allies you're close to or waste your action attacking yourself.
    madness is a large humanoid that it screams causes temporary madness, and have advantage attacking ppl affected by madness.
    violence is a flaming humanoid that deals more damage when attacking someone that attacked it last turn. If it dies to someone who hitted him twice, he explodes.
    hatred are small bat like things that are blinded to everything except one target, if they hit you, you also become blind to everything else, except the hatred.
    hipocrisy is gargantuan sized hydra thing that each head it is own creature. the heads can't work together and will try to pull taret away from each other; if they are adjacent to each other, they have disadvantage, same with creatures standing close to each other causes disadvantage on the heads.

    Not to brag but the best monster I’ve ever done was a Sorrowsworn, it was called Paranoia.
    So if a bad thought can manifest and kill you the worst thought you can have is Paranoia, knowing something is coming but it will probably never came.
    When I put it in the game, Paranoia just followed the party from a distance, like a shadow from tree to tree, dealing small amounts of psychic damage every time they made a check and when they started panicking and running away. The damage was getting higher every time, the only way to defeat it is to face it. The monster is low CR though.

    I think that something the Sorrowsworn have that is criminally underused is that, despite their low intelligence and bestial nature, all but the Wretched
    CAN SPEAK COMMON.
    I’ve always interpreted them talking as them shouting the hidden insecurities, fears, traumas and grudges at a character while attacking, which is honestly horrifying to me.

  • @GootPoot

    I think the Sorrowsworn are a good opportunity to show a party how badly they can fail. They find a dungeon with a collapsed entrance, and if they somehow manage to tear it open, the inside of the dungeon is full of different sorrowsworn. In the entrance room is an Angry. The walls have all be scratched at, and in the corner is an eviscerated corpse. Deeper in the dungeon is a triggered pitfall trap, at the bottom is a Lonely. Wedged in the spikes is another corpse. In a locked room is a Hungry. There isn’t a corpse but only fragments of bones. And then there’s a maze trap, with a Lost in it. At a random dead end in the maze, there’s another corpse.

    Confusion: This creature of confusion appears as a thin, tall creature that stumbles around aimlessly. As a bonus action, this creature can force a player to make a wisdom save. On a failed save, the player is stunned until the confused's next turn. The confused gains a large bonus to damage if a player is stunned

    Awesome video, perhaps a different idea for The Bored though? (that'll make the party hate you). Rather than lying in wait to surprise you, they'll creep up on you while your resting / waiting (i.e. 'doing nothing' really) - Just to make short & long rests in the Shadowfell that much more of a nightmare. Possibly also rather than them typically outright dealing damage to start, they are instead really hard to notice/perceive, but cause disadvantage on various checks & saving throws and other passive debuffing? In themselves they wouldn't then be a huge threat, but they could become deadly when you then bump into another type of enemy, with one of them clinging to you.

    The Apathetic/Hopeless
    The creature manifests when someone has completely lost all will to continue, it is a gaunt and ashen androgynous figure. Makes no attempts to engage and will actually flinch away from being attacked, however the creature maintains a 60ft aura of apathy, that makes all inside it feel fugue and listless. The feeling translates to anyone attacking the Apathetic making a DC 15 Cha Save or lose the action or spell completely, this also works against aoe spells that would hit within its aura. One final annoyance is that if the attack or spell succeeds it can use it's reaction to wither the attacker, adding a stack of exhaustion to them.
    So possibly best to focus fire it using as much advantage as you can muster 😅

    Angry = Wrath
    Hungry = Gluttony
    Lonely = Lust, I guess.
    Lost = Sloth, maybe?
    Wretched = Envy, maybe?
    Just missing Greed and Pride, neither of which are very well represented by your suggestions. But there's probably a reason as to their absence, probably because WotC couldn't really rap their mind around the two concepts.

    The Great Bøyg (Inspired by Hendrik Ibsen's opera: Peer Gynt)
    A strange immortal being with curious ties to Trolls, despite looking nothing like them. It's appearance includes elements of a dark shadow, a slimy serpent, and a thick cloud. It can see into the minds of its targets, see their goals, desires, and flaws, and persuasively offers them misleading advice.
    The Bøyg thrives off of doubt, despair, selfishness, egotism, materialism, and problems that cannot be physically confronted.
    "The Bøyg conquers, without fighting."
    It also likes to hinder travelers, misdirecting them, or making them feel lost, when they aren't.
    While it is intangible, and unkillable, it can be obstructed, annoyed, and repulsed with certain things: Conviction, Drive, Religious icons & artifacts, fervent prayer, church bells, and chaste women.
    I suppose this would classify more as an encounter, or event, but you can't really fight it. Not physically, anyway. SO, what do you think?

    How to deal with The Angry is what I do at my job on the daily. I listen, but I just ignore the emotion in a customer. I once had a lady get to the point of sputtering because I told her I wouldn't yell back at her and engage in an argument, because 'i'm afraid that's not professional and sets a bad example for our staff.' Just as a shadowsworn, she stood there unable to get me to engage negatively, until she just wandered off.

Boredom should be a mix of walking in mud which will make every step more weighty, which eventually just draws us into inaction and die of laziness

The creatures are supposed to experience their namesakes firsthand then in order to try to remedy it they do something that kills you but it creates a cycle. My idea of what a Boredom sorrowsworn would be is a creature that plays around with living creatures like cats until they die but then when they kill them they get bored and sad and have to find another creature to play with.
