I worked at the Mogul of Ireland mine for most of the last 3 years it operated. My last task was capping the 6 shafts and 1 historic shaft behind Silvermines village with reinforced concrete. My name or initials are in each one of the 7 concrete caps although they may be hard to find now. I have great memories of my time there, of living in Nenagh and sailing at Domineer in the summers, and all the great people I met.
My father worked in the mines for Mogul in the 70s. He was in the Army from 59 to 61, done 6 months in the Congo. Went to England after that to Cricklewood, kilburn. Came home and got a job as a lorry for McDonald's tombstones Templemore and then the mine after that. He lives in Drom village. He's nearly 82 now. He's got great stories from the mines. He done everything in the mine. Drilling, Blasting, operating all machinery.
In 1967 I worked in this mine as a mining student from Camborne School of Mines, UK ending up with AngloAmerican in Zambian copper mines. Idea of Zambia was instilled in my head by Paddy Rayan of Zambezi Bar in Nenagh to whom I’m indebted. I’m a Sikh from East Africa.
