Every time this gets brought up I’m reminded of a prank I pulled on a bunch of new soldiers we had at the time. I was in the Army when this happened, and I was assigned to a medical company. Kinda like what you seen in MASH, except we didn’t have surgical capabilities. We were more like a mobile ER/urgent care out of tents and had our own “ambulances” to transport patients. Anyways, we were assigned to be on domestic response for any chemical, nuclear, or biological attacks/incidents that requested us as well as humanitarian aid for natural disasters. I started a rumor that we are being sent to Area 51 to provide medical care for everyone there. Told all the new guys to pack their bags and be ready to go at a moments notice. I got all the leadership in on it, so when those guys asked their squad leader if they were really going, they told them yes too and to go pack their bags. This went on for about a week, with different things being added on to the lie/rumor we told the new guys. Some people took it a bit farther and made their soldiers show up to the company with their packed duffel bags. The day before it was set to happen all the new guys were freaking out, asking “when are we going? How are getting there? Don’t we have to pack our treatment tents and supplies?” At that point we decided to tell them it was just a prank and that we weren’t going. Fun times.
