Broke down on the side of the road today! 8 hours and finally home! Thanks for this vid! I am going to buy the part and check the pressure first! Thanks again!
Thank you for your video. I have an '02 Suburban that was cutting in and out, and finally died. I cracked the fuel line at the filter and turned on the key, and had pressure. So I replaced the filter. It ran fine for a few minutes, then started running rough, and finally died. I need to get me a pressure guage and plug it in. And now that you have shown me where, I appreciate it! Thanks!
The stock fuel pump is a common problem for these vehicles. I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 5.3L at 180,000+ miles with the same issue. Just got my Delphi pump in today and plan on dropping the tank tomorrow.
Hubby is getting down the road then the truck has no gas pedal response, I had to tow him home during school traffic this morning. Changed 02 sensors that were supposed to be bad, they showed up on the computer, changed fuel filter, ran good this past weekend, now back to this again. no gas pedal response. 4.8 liter v8 2001 Chevy silverado extended cab.
@Jerry Drake hey jerry. Your fuel filter should be on the driver side probably just past your door going back towards your gas tank. It will be underneath kinda tucked on the inside of your frame rail.
@ Patrick, I would start with your throttle positioning sensor. Relatively cheap and easy to install. Secondly I'd put about 6 oz of seafoam in your engine oil to see if it helps.
There is a relay in the fuse box under the hood that controls the fuel pump. It may be going bad. There may be some other relays that are the same type. I would try swapping one around with the one that controls the fuel pump and see if that fixes the issue. If it doesn't, the fuel pump could be going bad.
On an old pick up like that do not drop the tank; by an angle grinder from Harbor freight and cut an access port with plenty of room just over the fuel pump in the bed of the truck. The bed of the truck probably needs repair anyway at that point, so no big deal cutting an access port for the fuel pump…
@socalinhouse nah didn't do that because I could hear the fuel pump kick on. It just didn't produce much pressure (11PSI)... that is a good suggestion though. Thanks!
Great video for people like me who are mechanically challenged. I have a 2000 Tahoe LT, New style. I'm having trouble on start up. Have to crank it a few times before it starts. It idles fine and drives fine. Was told when i bought it that they had replaced the fuel filter and pump. So maybe the fuel pressure regulator? Also unrelated, the Service 4x4 light comes on all the time even though it has been...no idea why.
I just used your video to check pressure on mine and with the truck not runningi have about 50.5 once i start it fuel pressure drops to 48.5--49.00, do you think this is ok? Fuel pump is new and filter is new.On another note once I changed them I lost 4 mpg. Was getting about 14 before and now its lucky to get 10. truck has had a full tuneup and only major change was Fuel pump and filter.. Oh yeah It has no leaks.. Thanks for the great Video
Hi Patric William, discharged or low nbattery. Fault in the fuel or igniton systems, injector leaking ,distributor rotor carbon-tracked. I hope this help.
@onefast800 The acceptable ranges are 45 - 55PSI so your readings are within spec. That is if you have a 5.3L vortec which I'm assuming you do since you checked my video out. As far as your lost mpg, it could be that new fuel pump, but I don't have enough knowledge on that. You may want to ask either ericthecarguy or scotty kilmer on here. Just copy and paste their names in the youtube search. I'm sure that one of them would be able to answer that question for ya.
Did the pressure gauge come with a fitting for the Chevy or did you have to buy the GM fitting separator? I'm going to buy the gauge to test the fuel pressure on my Tahoe.
Thanks for this video! I'd like to add that I just did this on my 2006 Silverado 5.3L and the Harbor Freight gauge is a total piece of trash. The gauge is sealed about as well as a screen door. The gauge itself actually began filling with fuel! I appreciate the quick instructions on how to test it but must recommend to others to spend a few extra bucks and get a halfway decent gauge (if you even plan to use it again).
Nice vídeo Bro.... You are doing well.... Hey, please, what do you know about the pressure regulator of the right side...my truck just loose power when I was in the freeway.... I was safe on the shoulder but it was confused about what it could be....there was still gas remain but it was very close to the empty position... AAA Came and tows me to a gas station...after fill up with gas... I turned the key on....it work for 3 seconds and then stopped... and then I wasn't able to turn on anymore.... I will test the pressure in the fuel line as you did, but if the pressure is above 36 how to know if is the pressure regulator?
There is a relay in the fuse box under the hood that controls the fuel pump. It may be going bad. There may be some other relays that are the same type. I would try swapping one around with the one that controls the fuel pump and see if that fixes the issue.
03 yukon, same engine, takes about 3-5 second to start some days especially if low on fuel, did you have that problems? Gonna test pressure this weekend.
My pump quit at 150,000 miles , then I read the owners manual and it said change the fuel filter every 50,000 miles ( My Fault ) ..The ethanol in the gas had rusted inside the filter, and stopped it up, I sawed the old filter in too and it was full of rusted metal ...Thanks to the EPA for requiring 10% ethanol in our gas ...you can change the fuel pump without dropping the fuel tank...just saying ...Thanks
@wcamp3rd sorry I didn't get back to ya. I didn't have those problems, mine spuddered once then I started it backcourt and then when I shut it off, it wouldn't start again. Just kept dieseling
I'm convinced after 320,000 miles my OEM pump is going out in my 2000 sierra. It sucks because in general all after-market fuel pumps only last about 2-3 years. Oh well I guess, I think i'm going to cut the section out of my bed and make a latch for it. No one likes dropping fuel tanks, especially not the behemoths they put in these trucks. Mine is currently causing low idle, and it stats to sputter when I go over 50mph
yep you could do that. I bought my fuel pump from Napa(it was a rebranded airtex). been going about 4 years now. lifetime warranty too... just keep box and receipt.
I believe that 65 PSI is normal. I read somewhere that Chevy increased it. Could be a bad O2 sensor. Did they give you the diagnostic codes? It is my understanding that a check engine light usually means an emission problem. If your check engine light is still on, you can take it to Advance Auto or Autozone and get them to put their scanner on it to get the codes. They do it for free. You can also ask them for a printout of the codes and that may have possible causes on the printout.
Saludos amigos podrian ayudarme a identificar la guaya que esta al lado de la de aceleración y de que punto a que punto va ya que tengo una camioneta cheyenne silverado 2001 5.3 y no la tiene gracias de antemano y disculpe que use este medio
You should still check your fuel pressure. It still could be low. Did you change your fuel filter because the truck was acting like it wasn't getting gas? I have read where you can possibly hit the bottom of the gas tank with a rubber mallet to see if it will start working again. I hope this helps man. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
does any of these fuel related problems affect oil pressure? my 01 silverado 4.0 v6 died on me today. i tried turning it back on but it had trouble idling and eventually would stall. the message board read "check oil pressure" the oil level was good... maybe a faulty oil pump?
sounds like a fuel pump to me. Mine was $300, but that was because I bought it at NAPA to get the lifetime warranty. You can get just the pump for around $60. I saw another guy on youtube that showed that. Rock Auto has the exact same pump I bought from NAPA for $152. It is an Airtex fuel pump. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.
my truck (2000 Silverado 5.3 2wd) stalled on me the other day on the high way. couldn't get it above 50 mph n once I pulled over it would start run rough then die. I had it towed back to my place hooked up a pressure gauge n it was reading about 30 n still dying. then all the sudden now it's fine in the sense that it stays running (granted at 45 psi) I don't trust it because obviously when something like that happens it just doesn't go away. also my pump did hum while driving for the past few months n I'm preparing to change the fuel pump within the coimig day or so. do you think this would more than likely be my issue? the filter looks on the new side. all shiny and the lines are all rusted.
Have you ever had any issues with the fuel pump relay, I have had this issue on my tahoe. changed the fuel pump, it stopped but it starting to act again. I noticed that the relay would heat up badly. could this be a fuel filter issue? or pin or grounding issue?
@eggybaby84 I just re-read your comment and overlooked the Yukon part. I guess you will have to drop the tank . It isn't real hard to do that though. Just try to drain the tank. That makes it easier to manage.
thanks for idea, ran out and got tester @ harbour freight, found my pressure is at 10psi only,,now i have idea where to look,,, also it was only $19.95 too,
Hello, I have been having problems with my Chevy starting. I have had the battery, starter and alternator tested and they're all good. The power comes on but it doesn't start and there's no clicking or any other noises when it does this. Usually after I've waited 5 mins it starts like nothing happened. Could it be the fuel pump?
i have a 2003 silverado and im replacing my fuel pump, whats up with the minimum pressure range(psi) and minimum free flow rate(psi)??? i have the 4.8l and the fuel pump im getting is 72.5 minimum pressure range and 48.6 on the minimum free flow rate
i have a 97 silverado 5.0L i replaced my fuel pump and it still wont start. i put a little gas in the carburetor and then it will start then stop. how do i find out if the gass is getting to it or not or like how do i get all the air out of the lines? Please help out!
hello there I have a Chevrolet impala 2002 and its has same problems somtime its start and run good but some time don't start I have to wait like 20 30 mini to start it again is that my fuel pump bad or is the fuel pressure sensor plz need some help,
There are several to choose from on that link I posted. I bought mine at Napa, but that was before I found out about Rock Auto. I have bought several things from Rock Auto and that is pretty much where I buy my parts unless I need them right now. Rock Auto takes a few days to get the parts to you
Hopefully your fuel tank is near empty. Otherwise it can be a bit of pain to drop it. I used a floor Jack with a small piece of 3/4" plywood on it to drop it. I had about 1/2 tank
Hey i have a 2001 chevy silverado and its been been diagnosed as my fuel pump is weak..but i want to know about how long before it would actually go out ..and certain days its been not wanting to start but if i was to keep trying it over and over it would start..but if you know Anything about how long does it take to go out if its been diagnosed as weak already..
Curtis Watkins sorry for the late response. it's hit and miss on when it will go out. throw a rubber mallet in your truck. if it does stop while you are out on the road, smack the bottom center of your gas tank. that may get it to work a little longer. I wouldnt wait around too long on replacing it though
Dude that is your regulator that is making 50 psi even if your pump is making higher. Rev up and see if pressure maintains while revved. If drops you might have restriction maybe at filter or regulator going bad.
LOL.... "The camera adds 50lbs" Thanks for posting this. I am having issues with my 2000 Escalade. Let me back up a bit. Last year, during very hot weather, I had a 45 minute trip for work. I was running the A/C. I noticed the truck shifting hard. I got a "check engine" light and decided to check it when I had time. A day or two later, the 'check engine' light went away and all seemed fine. However, this winter, sometimes it would not start right up. So, I would turn the ignition key on a couple of times prior to staring it to build fuel pressure. No problems until the other day when again, it was hot out and I was running the A/C. I noticed the truck shifting hard and thought, okay, check engine light should come on but before that happened, the truck died. I had to have it towed home. I noticed the air intake was disconnected from the filter, right before the mass airflow sensor. Someone recommended cleaning that which I did (didn't look dirty but what the hell). Next step, I will check the fuel pressure in a day or two. My QUESTION is... What would cause the hard shifting if it's a fuel pressure problem? Any help would certainly be appreciated.
I don't think that fuel pressure would cause a hard shift. Hopefully you looked up how to clean the MAF the correct way. Those things are sensitive and are easily damaged. The hard shift sounds like a sensor on the transmission or it could be something as simple as a dirty transmission filter. Have you checked your transmission fluid? How long has it been since it has been changed? Make sure it doesn't have a burnt smell to it when you check it. Hope some of this info helps. You may want to look up the Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) on your Escalade. It may be a common problem. They can be found at safercar.gov
I was driving and it just started to lose power. I was in parking lot and it started to want to turn off. Turned it off then maybe 30-40m later I didn't want to start up. Had it towed and the tow guy said it started up but that was 3-4hrs later. I was told change the wires and plugs so did that and it starts up but still just bogged out after a 1-2 minutes. Fuel pump you think??
Sounds like it. Try and build fuel pressure by turning the key off and on 3 times, then turn over to start. This might get you out of a hard spot, or not at all lol
hi I have the same truck and it had a hard start in the morning and I'm getting lean fuel codes in both banks. I had a fuel pump put in a year ago. I bought a pressure gage like the one you have from hf and I'm getting 45 psi while running do you think it would cause and hard start and lean fuel codes.thanks.
not sure James. check out Scotty Kilmer and Eric the car guy on here. you can post questions to them and they will probably get you a good answer. sorry I couldn't help ya out
Please can you help us? Can you show us, or tell us the easiest way to remove the under bed of a 2001 Chevy Silverado? Thank you so much in advance for your video and any future help would be very much appreciated. God bless you in all your endeavors.
you can unbolt the bed and jack it up, but that is kind of dangerous so I don't recommend it. There is a strap that holds the tank on. if you unbolt it, the tank will drop down. I would put a floorjack with a piece of wood on it running across the tank, unbolt that strap, and slowly lower the tank. You need to make sure that you do this slowly so you can unhook the hoses from where they hook up to the fuel pump. Hope this helps
I have the same truck its 2000 I have a couple obd 2 codes p0171 p0174 and it says to check fuel presser and w key on its at 50 psi and after reading the slips from autozone it says if both codes are toather check the mass air flow sensor .....bc this is a used motor that was put in mine thanks for the vido thur now I probly should start it up and see what the reading is
had one fuel pump go out all of a sudden down the road. Filled up the gas tank and got me home. Pump I have now is about 40 psi at idle. Have to turn the key 3 times to prime the thing before it fires right up. Sometimes they go out slowly and sometimes they explode. Wish they had a door under the rear seat. Would be alot easier instead of dropping the tank. Chevy engineering i guess.
my truck lost power last night as if the gas had cut off on me then the truck turned off my fuel pump turns on i can hear it i just replaced my fuel filter 3 weeks ago i have a 99 chev.
I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado 4x4 vortec 7.4L 454 engine, it was running good but this monday night forze in here so I when I went to start the truck Tuesday the battery was dead I jumped started it, the next day happened the same thing but this time it wouldn't start. I check the altenator and its good, I had a bad battery so I bought a new one, still not working, I change the fuel filter, fuel relay, check for spark on the plug wires and it stills not starting, I check the fuel pressure and Im not getting any. Does that means that the fuel pump os bad or is not getting powe. What else can I do to check it? I don't want to spend $260 on a new pump and end up being something else...
It is behind the butterfly valve (where your hose from your air filter hooks up) on the right-hand side close to the firewall. You will see a silver looking line with usually a black screw on cover on it. Hope this helps.
it was the whole assembly that I bought. I think that is the only way they sell it. I bought my fuel pump from NAPA. It was $300+tax. The only reason why I bought it from there was because it supposedly has a lifetime warranty. It was an Airtex fuel pump though... Just in a NAPA box. You can check on rockauto.com. They are half the price... Just not a lifetime warranty... Search this text string on RUclips to see a good way to get to the fuel pump OggjmnZJcbM. easier than dropping tank
hi again, i've changed the fuel filter, checked relay, and FPR seems to be fine ,i only get 10 psi fuel pressure, i changed fuel pump two years ago,can it be the pump again,i can hear the pump kick in and cut off after fifteen or so seconds, only thing is that now the pump noise seems to be a little louder than usual,99 silverado 4.8, any ideas, please let me now,,,i'm learning to be my own mechanic with the help of you guys,,truck ran fine until after i changed the starter, when i went to start it, it died after ten seconds, haven't been able to start again,,,
It's possible. Sounds like you have checked just about everything else. Sorry I did not respond sooner. Have you been able to figure out what it wrong yet?
tennwhitetrash yes, after getting the fuel pressure tester,i was convinced it is the fuel pump again,i've learned that fuel pumps are an issue with this model, after installing a new pump,it finally started, thanks alot!!
@revampted I haven't had a problem with my relay yet. Hopefully I don't. I think that there are 3 other relays in the box that are the same as your fuel pump relay. I would try to swap one of those around with your fuel pump relay and see if it heats up too. I doubt that it would be a fuel filter issue. can't say about the relay 100% though. search chevroletforum .c o m for fuel pump relay. I would post the direct link, but youtube doesn't allow it.
@eggybaby84 Ok last comment back to ya. :) Search this text in RUclips. 1V-257Bn0sA It is for a 97 Tahoe and a good video. The guy shows some tools to remove the fuel lines. They also sell these at Harbor Freight. I used some needle nose pliers, but the proper tools make work better.
I like your captions, they were the best part, aside from rock solid tech info.
Thanks for the most important piece of information that the pressure was 10psi and dying. That's what mine was when I tested it. Thanks 😊 Sooo much.
No problem. Glad the video helped out!
cool. Glad my video was able to help. Hopefully you find the problem and it is an easy fix.
Correct pressure Pfor V8 is 55 to 62 psi
The stock fuel pump is a common problem for these vehicles. I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 5.3L at 180,000+ miles with the same issue. Just got my Delphi pump in today and plan on dropping the tank tomorrow.
How did it go?
@@JoseATr3hopefully it’s fixed. Been 11 years
Great vid. Well done Sir. Such a likable guy.
also one other thing to check is the battery. a battery that is low can cause all kinds of weird problems.
Hubby is getting down the road then the truck has no gas pedal response, I had to tow him home during school traffic this morning. @Jerry Drake hey jerry. Your fuel filter should be on the driver side probably just past your door going back towards your gas tank. It will be underneath kinda tucked on the inside of your frame rail.
You don't need to remove the plastic cover to get at the fuel valve. It's accessible from the side.
Great quality video and info , Thanks for the free knowledge ,and keep up the good work !!!!

I had about 1/2 tank
great video
Ah I replaced the fuel pump and that corrected the issue.that was not too long after I posted this video
Where do you find the fuel filter on 2001 tahoe.
Jerry Drake driver side on frame rail
thank you that was very helpful
I am having the exact same issue as Pedro, even down to the 10psi and 10 seconds part. New fuel pump, Regulator, and battery. Any ideas?
Get a wiring diagram and check your grounds, make sure they are getting good contact with the frame.
Also see that Pedro replaced his fuel pump and that corrected the issue.
They can be found at safercar.gov
tennwhitetrash Yes, I was careful cleaning the MAF. I used contact cleaner and didn't touch any wires.
thanks very helpful
I bought a pressure gage like the one you have from hf and I'm getting 45 psi while running do you think it would cause and hard start and lean fuel codes.thanks.
not sure James. check out Scotty Kilmer and Eric the car guy on here. you can post questions to them and they will probably get you a good answer. sorry I couldn't help ya out
James Macfadden my truck is doing same thing what did you do to fix
Thank you, we took the bed off after all a month ago.
I have the same truck its 2000
I have a couple obd 2 codes p0171 p0174
and it says to check fuel presser and w key on
its at 50 psi
and after reading the slips from autozone
it says if both codes are toather check the mass air
flow sensor .....bc this is a used motor that was put
in mine
thanks for the vido thur
now I probly should start it up and see what the reading is
had one fuel pump go out all of a sudden down the road.
Also remember that fuel pressure needs to be at least 50PSI when you check it.
Is it the same for a 2000 silverado
my truck lost power last night as if the gas had cut off on me then the truck turned off my fuel pump turns on i can hear it i just replaced my fuel filter 3 weeks ago i have a 99 chev.
Hey Antonio Flores . sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner than this. Did you get your truck fixed?
It is behind the butterfly valve (where your hose from your air filter hooks up) on the right-hand side close to the firewall. You will see a silver looking line with usually a black screw on cover on it. Hope this helps.
Good video. Thank you.
Glad I could help
Do you need to disconnect the fuel pressure relay before you start?
No
it was the whole assembly that I bought.
Have you been able to figure out what it wrong yet?
does it rise up and go back down?
tennwhitetrash yes, after getting the fuel pressure tester,i was convinced it is the fuel pump again,i've learned that fuel pumps are an issue with this model, after installing a new pump,it finally started, thanks alot!!
tennwhitetrash I have not seen you mention the fuel pressure regulator for those who replaced there pump with no results???
+John Miller Thats what you get when you learn to be a mechanic on RUclips Pedro would be better to read a book on diagnosis.
does the car need to start to check the fuel pressure?
silentone503 No
Good stuff 👍🏻
Thanks
Good info!
Hi how I know when the gas pomp is not working...
Jose Esparza if there's no fuel pressure the pump probably isn't working
thanks big guy
@electronicsprepairer cool deal! Thanks for sharing!
hey man. Sorry I didn't respond when you sent this to me. I am not sure how to replace the fuel injectors. I have never had to change any yet.
2001 GMC 1500. 300,000 and still going
Nice! They don't build them like they used to
ok.thanks
How do I install panel off the main breaker in the home
wrong video?
You need to remove the fuse so that the car does not start for safety
Ah I reckon. I wanna see what the pressure is while it is running as well...
Thanks!
you're welcome! Hopefully it helped you out!
@CALABEHRA lmao! My wife thinks so too except she doesn't like the gray!
btw great vid. real helpful ;>
When I crank mine up sometime it has a rough idle then when kinda warm it smooths out can any one tell me wats the deal
Get a resolve on this yet? Mine idles slightly rough. New pump, filter, plugs, wires, good battery, good grounds, fuel pressure good.
@eggybaby84 Ok last comment back to ya. :) Search this text in RUclips. 1V-257Bn0sA It is for a 97 Tahoe and a good video. The guy shows some tools to remove the fuel lines. They also sell these at Harbor Freight. I used some needle nose pliers, but the proper tools make work better.
nope. I didn't bother checking that.
@jjelectro demasiado. Conozco solamente español un poco.
put new fuel pump and filter truck is getting gas now but acting like it wants to run but will not
not the cam that adds weight, its the angle of the cam and ur head position
