- Happy New Year! I've been looking into the Nintendo Switch Flash Cart, known as the MiG Switch over the holiday break and wanted to learn more about it. It's in my opinion that this product may - allegedly - be the work of Team Xecuter as the community has uncovered compelling evidence to suggest a former member - allegedly - appears to have been hosting the website After Time X as a front to promote the product. In today's episode, we discuss the MiG Switch Flash Cart, how it works and why I believe TX may be involved.

Nintendo has been on record saying that when you buy one of their games (physical or digital) that you are truly just buying 1 license to play the game and that they can take that license away from you at any time for any reason. This reminds me of a Louis Rossmann quote: "If paying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing."
That isn't something invented by Nintendo. Try reading the terms and conditions for software on something even as far back as the PS1

I pirate MANY of the games I own. In fact, and this is funny to me, a good 10+ years back I backed an indie Dreamcast release and due to some behind the scenes reasons (it was not the deal beforehand) the developer's representative was talking about putting the backers in the manual. Told him plain and simple that people WOULD pirate the game so they should put us in the credits instead. The game has since been ported over and over and I pirated it myself for the PC the other day. 😛
Just own a Lite currently but I have proper PC screens. I'm not going to be forced to play shmups on the Lite when I can play them on PC in TATE; ESPECIALLY when I own the titles (sometimes for multiple systems like I do with Don- and Dodonpachi/DOJ/Mushihimesama etc). Forget that. I also pirate instead of playing demos (that I sometimes can't find). Not going to buy blindly. I did that as a child; that's how I ended up with The Crow for the Sega Saturn...

As usual MVG explains it in detail. Some other videos are just garbage. I was reading the implementation of it from reddit threads and other youtubers justs go "brrr brrr new r4 for switch" without even mentioning the certificate checks.

Yeah, thanks for the breakdown. I've avoided watching anything about this flashcart until someone had hard info to mention. That old Bowser is at it again making trouble for Nintendo and the Mushroom Kingdom.
From what I understood, this product is being sold from Russia, where certain piracy laws were suspended due to sanctions imposed by other countries. Nintendo can't do anything about this being sold in Russia, but can go after any reseller outside of Russia.
Then chinese manufacturers will start producing it and sell it to any online store they can.

I talk to Gary and Max often. Gary I doubt has anything to do with it but he is very close for comfort. Max moves by the beat of his own drum so I cant say for sure. Both of them have been cool with me and I talked about what we discussed on the show last night. Your video was well done and you know the scene better than me. im just not sure if it is a good thing or not that I am in the "In" crowd. lol

The gamecard dumper interests me the most but not sure how useful it would be without being able to dump updates + DLC without use of CFW.

@@user-pm9nb4fg1d Right but they mean the dumper itself, it will be able to preserve the game cart only as it can't then backup the updates or DLC you own from your switch console, meaning that in terms of actual preservation this will only do part of the job
Game updates are never installed onto the game cartridge itself just the console, I can see the games pulling an update as a normal cartridge would and a user would just download their DLC from the eShop as one would normally do.
Dumping it yourself doesn't make it legal anyways. Just download them, my dude.

I imagine that this will create a serious headache for Nintendo if they were indeed planning on backwards compatibility and the same cartridge format for the switch 2.
Yes and no, its unlikely the carts will be identical, it will probably be the same thing as UHS micro SD cards do, they added an extra row of pins further up the card which is how it gets faster speeds in a compatible reader etc
That way the physical layout of the cart doesn't change enough for it to matter but it would mean the switch would be unable to load switch 2 carts but the switch 2 could do both

@@ransamfastthey did something like that with Gb/gba/ Nintendo DS.
Due to different notches, it is not possible to put a GB cartridge in the GBA slot on the ds. The GBA takes both gba and gb carts.
@@janzibansi9218 This is not akin to that, this is about making a new cartridge similar to the previous device's cartridges that will only fit in the newgen device so that players can play both lastgen and newgen games on the newgen console
(The 3ds cartridge has a little extra piece on the side that makes it impossible to fit in the DS's slot, whereas DS cartridges fit easily in the 3ds.)
GB/GBC cartridges not fitting in the DS is the opposite situation, where by design Nintendo cut backwards compatibility with those two on the new console, only allowing GBA.
I was personally worried about that since Nintendo was quietly talking about not even having a cartridge slot in the Switch 2 and all future consoles. If the MIG team could've just waited for the Switch 2 to get released we would've been able to not only get the Switch 2 with the normal cartridge slot for backwards compatibility, but with the ability to use this cartridge slot hack on it. They just needed to be patient and we all could've benefited, but knowing Nintendo they’ll do everything in their power to put a stop to this by changing the Switch 2, even going as far as taking out the cartridge slot completely. They’re petty enough to do it, it's Nintendo we’re talking about after all.
I want one and not for piracy. I buy physical games because, we all know why, to own them. But it would be nice to be able to switch to any game I own without swapping cards. My kids have already lost 2 of my games (they never lose their own games) and having them backed up and put away and stored would be great.
True, but 90% of people will use this for piracy...Nintendo would be stupid to not act and act quickly with vengeance!
@@DungarooTV nah, it wouldn't be stupid, it'd just be out of character for them. Piracy doesn't actually harm game studios usually, the people pirating the games wouldn't have bought the game originally most of the time

This will never officially happen because again, 90% if not more, of people will use it to pirate games - so from Nintendo's standpoint - you either buy their games or not - it's that simple unfortunately but I know what you're saying @@ruineka_one
This is looking at it from an emotional perspective - I agree with you, but to Nintendo it's black and white - you either buy games from them or if you seem to want to copy their games and replay them for free - then it's piracy 101 so why would they allow this - they simply wouldn't!@@tomykong2915

Cool to see a flashcart finally being made, just gotta wait for someone else to clone it. Remeber, these are the same guys who will destroy your console if their software thinks you're trying to pirate their piracy tool. They've done this with several of their products across multiple consoles, including the Switch. I'm hoping this could lead to hardmod-less CFW.
This won't enable CFW in the slightest, the cart reader isn't accessed during the boot process so you aren't going to be able to inject anything early enough
@@shanematthews1985 That's a damn shame. From what I've read now, this is only capable of running signed retail games, so the only use for this is pira...excuse me...umm...backups! I'd just picofly my (patched) switch, but I'm not comfortable sending my switch to some guy somewhere to mod it for me, and I'm not risking the microscopic soldering myself. I've been waiting for either a software exploit or some non-intrusive hardware exploit, looks like I'll still be waiting...
@@shanematthews1985I may be wrong but didn't ninjahax on the 3ds cause an overflow somehow, which then caused errors and allowed code execution? Unless games are completely cut off from any sort of system files, there should be some way to run code.

To me, this is interesting for those digital-only games on the Switch. I'm a believer in physical collections, so I buy hundreds of games on each console to play. But this whole "you get part on the cartridge and part download" thing we're going through at the moment can get fuck*d to be frank. I don't care if it's piracy, if you're not letting me buy a physical copy, then I'm going to do it myself.

I don't think I've EVER heard you drop the F-bomb on this channel. Honestly that's a HUGE thing underscoring how serious this whole thing could be for him. If he IS still involved and is still farting around with the crew that landed him in prison once, the odds are good he's not going to learn his lesson this time. Technical aspect aside-- this will be a very useful tool in like ten or 15 years when the Switch has been EOL and gear for it dries up-- he needs to Not Be Doing This Right Now.

@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI The point is this is bad timing. The Switch is still being actively patched and is still Nintendo's current flagship product. It's too high profile and there is a good chance Nintendo will patch it into not working. Not to mention there's still way too much chance of Nintendo taking legal action. The best strategy is to save all hacks, jailbreaks, and workarounds for a console until it hits end of life. The nature of the product and its high profile means it likely WON'T be a useful tool in a few years as Nintendo starts to wrap up patching the Switch.
EDIT: A similar thing happened with the 3DS. There was way too much dicking around and openly advertising the capabilities of the flashcarts being sold. Nintendo eventually locked down and knocked out a good chunk of the older flashcarts and hack methods unless you can downgrade your console.
It threw me off a bit as well. Wasn't expecting it from MVG, but it really does point out the seriousness.

So the worst thing is, I remember listening to an interview with Gary on the podcast Darknet Diaries. He went through his entire history before going into prison, and I thought to myself, man... hes done alot, and now hes out of prison. I hope he has a good life with his head low, maybe helping the homebrew scene or something... and... Nope, here we are again.
(Also, would highly recommend the episode "Team Xecuter" by Darknet Diaries on whatever your podcast app of choice is, as it goes into technical details, and details about Gary's life in general)

Iirc. They were alao behind the sky3ds card, which contained bricking software if you avoided the limited amount of games you could use it with.
If you want homebrew, get one of those micro pi's, program it yourself and have someone solder it in for you...

This is the best explanation about this so far. If you disassemble the code in the leak the keys are there(they might of used different keys for production units). I didn't know they got them also from the hardware. Nvrom is down to 60nm (trust me 4gb to 64gb can use much larger nm and nm is not true nm)and they got optical down to 30nm for checking wafers so the decap would be not too hard.

Some people remove plastics etc with acids, sulphuric and nitric the clean in acetone. Then take pictures of the rom to get the code of a secured device.

Fascinating as this is not technically not illegal, just extremely gray. I do think that this is very important for game preservation.
It's irrelevant for preservation. You have been able to dump Switch games for half a decade now and this is using a proprietary format which may not ever be compatible with anything else.

I doubt there is much to preserve when it comes to physical about a system still in production right now.

This device looks awesome. I'd be interested in picking one up along with a used Switch Lite for a spare just for traveling or something. Also, score one for preservation since too many cartridges require online day 1 downloads.
My concern is the rumored Switch 2 hardware isn't finalized yet, and this device could cause Nintendo to eliminate physical Switch cartridge backwards compatibility as a precaution.
This won't resolve the issue with day 1 updates being required, its only going to back up the physical cart, so if data is missing from the cart it will remain missing from the dump
@@shanematthews1985 Day 1 updates just makes it less likely that people who believe in video game preservation will buy physical games. I know I won't.
This has come to mind lately. With all the legal troubles this team did in sure they learned a thing or 2 about copyright laws. This has enabled them to walk the line and they know where to push and where to not push by now. 🤫

According to THEIR rules, I don't own the games I pay for. So, it's not piracy if I never owned their games in the first place. I will have this day one if possible. I truly hope Team Xecuter is behind this. I love this.

I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed and learned so much from your videos since I came across them here. I have been interested in modding software and hardware since around 2006, when I stumbled upon a forum for modding Motorola phones, and realized the cake was a lie, and manufacturers of consumer devices weren't being honest with us about the capabilities of their devices, nor were they doing due diligence in providing the newest, most capable versions of firmware for devices that were destined to never be updated once purchased.
I think it really speaks to how good of a person you are that you would even make this video, which I feel is motivated by nothing more than a desire to give advice to someone in a way that they will not be able to avoid it.

One last question, that i've always been curious about. Do you use FL Studio to create your videos' music? I love FL, another hobby. I can't help but hear similarities in your synth choices with some of the vst's in that DAW.

I wouldn't worry about online capabilities considering both Yuzu and Ryujinx (LDN build) have the ability of playing your backups online. And it's likely legit as all popular Nintendo cartridge based systems have flash carts.

@@666Drazil It likely uses the "LAN" mode that certain games support, it will enable you to do things like local multiplayer but online, it won't allow access to actual online services
@@666Drazil Yes, go to create room or join room. Make sure you have set up a profile if you have not done so yet.
Just be aware if you've been playing games your saved games are under the default profile name of Yuzu. Simply make another profile with a preferred name, then make IT your default. Don't forget to move all of your saved games to the new profile.
Once you've done this... create a room for yourself and some friends, or join a room and have fun.
Ryujinx with the LDN build can be used online as well. I believe Citra can do the same with 3DS games.
Iirc it replicates the "local wireless" mode and can't use the actual Nintendo online mode. That said, Yuzu DOES have online support oddly enough; if you run the h0mebrew store nro in the emulator, the program will work

As much as I’m intrigued by the MIG Switch, if Gary Bowser is even tangentially involved with it then Nintendo are going to go out of their way to ruin him. It isn’t worth having his life completely destroyed, he needs to take a step back & consider everything.

That was a down right solid, and straight forward choice of words to tell generally anyone, especially after they've served prison time. Not that it's any of my business, but if I were Gary, I would take your advice and walk away before a longer prison sentence sneaks up and fucks me over for a longer duration.

At this point in the hardware cycle I'm so impressed by Ryujinx and Yuzu that I don't even care about using original hardware anymore.
Tbf I do want this just to use said Yuzu so I can play xbc1 and 2 on PC

i REALLY hope this turns out to be something good for the homebrew community eventually, otherwise there is going to be a whole bunch of piracy and no homebrew

Flashcarts are ONLY EVER used for piracy now.
Nintendo can easily patch any hardware exploits, they only chose not to with the 3DS line because it probably wasn't worth it with the Switch selling so well.
Unless the Switch 2 releases soon, Nintendo is just going to release new hardware to fix said exploits.
Also the homebrew community has their own exploits already, if you want you can use an RCM exploit to boot custom firmware on unpatched Switches to run homebrew.
@@jazuqua but that's the point - it only works on unpatched Switches, so anything that's been produced in the last... 4 or so years is out of the question. That's the majority of Switch units just being unviable, unless the user wants to play around with microsoldering.
Once Nintendo moves onto the next console, we could see more exploits cropping up - Nintendo wouldn't be fixing the old consoles with new hardware revisions, and even software updates would dry up eventually. I'm hoping that we see a repeat of what happened to the 3DS.

Sure piracy will be the main thing, but homebrew will be the most curious thing i will be looking for, even though i will buy another switch just to play the homebrew cartridges

Nintendo shuts down eShops, won’t let you redownload games you paid for onto a new console for 3DS and Wii, they are hostile to their own customers, they price gouge to keep their products out of customer hands and pursue “prestige brand” shortages. Their Switch is not backwards compatible. Licenses for purchases on 3DS and Wii are not transferable.

When the switch first came out, there were videos endlessly comparing cartridge, internal memory, and MicroSD load speeds. If I remember correctly internal memory was slightly faster than cartridges which were faster than micro SD. Would it be possible for Nintendo themselves that implement some kind of speed testing on games that runs in the background to determine if a cartridge game is loading slower than it should be?
Possibly, but they don't really need to if certificates are unique for each game cartridge.

There are different speeds of SD cards, they can record 8k60 raw now, so because speed is all dependant on the sd+slot speed inside the flash cart, it has wiggle room and could just emulate it being the exact same speed as a cartridge.
One interesting thing that was possible for the Sky3DS cards was to have your own header set up for all games you play online.
So, I did the following thing:
I used one of my singleplayer 3DS games (I think it was Majoras Mask 3D).
I grabbed the unique header from the game and set it as my unique header.
Since even offline Games have unique headers even if I were to sell it at some point (I won't) I still will always be the ONLY person with that header online - unless someone were to take my cartridge and grab the header without my knowledge.
If anything like that is possible on the Switch, it will be easy sailing - I literally played dozens of online 3DS games and my 3DS is still 100% functional and not banned.

Not likely. Even if there were cart interface exploits, this cart would need to be modded to use them. Anti-clone mitigations will get in the way.

Considering you need to remove and reinsert the cartridge to switch games, that will probably both get old real quick, and wear out the cartridge slot prematurely.
