  • The Theban Legion (c 286AD), under the leadership of St Mauritius, originated from the ancient town of Thebes, near Luxor and Karnak, Egypt. They were dispatched by co-emperor Maximian to Helvetia (Switzerland) to quell a rebellion there. After discovering that they had to persecute fellow Christians in the area, the legion refused to follow Maximian's command. As a retaliation, Maximian ordered the legion to be decimated (i.e., every 10th soldier in the legion was to be executed). The legion still refused to carry the order, so another decimation order was given. This is when the story starts to become unclear. Eucharius, Bishop of Lyons, wrote around a hundred years later, that in the end, all 6,600 legionaries were massacred. However, many historians disagree with this account as they did not find such evidence. Regardless, we know that these soldiers would rather perish than persecute fellow brethren in faith.

No, esta no es esa Legión. Esta legión se formó unos 200 años después de la Legio XII Fulminata.
