I read Baldwin in my waking up days in the early 70's! He causes you to deal with how the brutality of slavery was designed to make us more concerned about the dis-ease of the Massah to the detriment of our own! In a lot of cases, it was a matter of life or death! We have to 'recognize' and reckon with that in ourselves and overcome!
