  • You might think this shape looks familiar, but even the most devoted rotary enthusiasts will probably never have seen one. This is the one and only known original Mazda Cosmo HB out there! Powered by what is arguably Toyo Kogyo’s best-ever engine, the 12A six-port turbo, it is quick despite it's considerable 1,6 tonnes. That's a full 400 kgs more than its relative, the four-door 929!. Most of this extra weight is quite possibly sound deadening and wires for all the potential equipment this car could be ordered with. Try as you might, Mazda is extremely tight-lipped when it comes to any info at all on these cars, from performance data to production figures. It seems that part of the special-order-only package was a big chunk of undiluted Mazda myth. This only surviving original car is in regular use and all the electronic gizmos work. A real hi-tech wonder in plain clothing. Enjoy!

      A fair point. Apparently, the 12A turbo is the best engine Mazda ever made.

    Did you know.....
    The HB-series Cosmo was the ONLY car in the world to offer all 3-types of engines...
    1. 12A-SPI / 12A-T / 13B-RESI
    2. 2.0 lt / 2.0-EFI / 2.0-Turbo
    3. 2.2 diesel
    No other car before or after can achieve this

      @@KenanTurkiye Sure thing. Personally, I prefer the smoothness, silence and fuel economy of an original, twin-dizzy 12A. It's getting quite rare, too. ;^)

    Is this really the only one left?

    • @xntrcshft
      @xntrcshft  Год назад +2

      Good question! 4 of these were sold to Australia, and some of these survive, but they have all been modified. How many cars were sold in Japan is unknown, but since the car was not marketed there at all, the number was probably very small (no-one at Mazda seemed eager to count, either!). Generally, very few old cars survive in Japan because of tax regulations and rust. So, yes, this is very likely the only original Cosmo HB left. It's impossible to say with 100% certainty, though, so if you come across one, let us know!

    • @xntrcshft
      @xntrcshft  Год назад

      The 929 was the piston-engined version. This is the HB Cosmo, which had a 12A turbo rotary engine and some 175 bhp. It was special order only and is stuffed with extra accessories and equipment.

    if you take an old 929 and drop a rotary in it, will not become a Cosmo then?
