From watching The Boys and knowing what Hollywood is really like behind closed doors doors what likely happened was the studio forced the both of them into sparking rumors of an affair to promote the film. And knowing people are blind sheep they will quite literally believe is an obvious affair that isn’t trying to hide.
Side Note: Sydney has claimed before that she’s still struggling financially so jumps on any role she gets being a newbie into Hollywood and what not. She will probably has no choice but to do what an exec or her publicist forces her to do.

Ha! You don't think that wasn't on purpose? She's smart and she knows that people will notice every detail and latch on the anything to believe in the silly rumours. It's part of the joke. Besides not everyone wears their engagement ring 24/7.
Odds are she didn't want to lose it in the chaos that is SNL quick-changes. They only have a few minutes of commercial time to change from the monolog outfit to their costume for the first sketch and the whole time it is organized chaos. Sydney probably took it off so that it wouldn't snag on any clothes during the change, plus the ring might not fit with her character in the next sketch.
