I guess the author wanted to build this strong love between the Xiao Wu and Tang san. Obviously they could not have and maintain just sibling love between them and once that line to more than just 'sibling level' is crossed, naturally the romance will increase compared to before. The sea God trials after some time became a little boring for me as well. But in the novel, the part after the leave the Sea God island was really cool. So I am waiting for it.
