Our boy Destiny got Sean Carroll on? I am so proud.
wtf my uni general relativity unit is now crossing over w my ecelebs. wtf is happening
ive literally never seen destiny so happy
me neither. And thats in 8-9 years of watching him :D
I am genuinely impressed that Destiny actually got Sean Carroll on here. This was far better than the normal conversations/debates he has with cognitively inept apes. Great job and thank you for the amazing content, Destiny!
it's weird how the brain works, listening to a conversation between two intellectuals actually feels soothing and relaxing...it's not just two apes throwing shit at each other. (like the usual Destiny debate)
My brain is unironically still in recovery mode from so many high level important ideas
Graham Siggins I aaaaaagreeeeeeee

Destiny talking to someone with an IQ in the triple digits? Wow what's the occasion?
I'm a simple man. I see Sean Carroll and Destiny imma click.
7:47 -- As someone who does mathematics, I completely second this comment; and I think a great example of it is when somebody asks what I do. When I tell them, they usually respond with "Oh! That's great! I was never good at math in school." or "Eck! I hate math! But you do you!" While I don't want to attribute unwarranted assumptions about why people talk to mathematicians like this, this kind of interaction always comes off as adversarial or hostile, whether that was the intention or not; and I can't help that it seems like they think I'm going to see myself as superior to them for studying it. It always comes off as imposing that I'm some kind of elitist for having academic interests perceived by the public as difficult. In fact, one of the numerical analysis professors at my undergraduate institution actually joked about how he's been around the world so much that he prefers to lie and tell people he's a global studies professor, because then people will react less negatively and continue a conversation with him.
You can't fool me. I can tell by the alignment of the stars at the exact moment you posted this that in reality you're a mathematical supremacist! /s
More seriously, I know for myself that talking to math nerds is somewhat intimidating, because they have entire fields of knowledge that literally might as well be witchcraft for all that I understand of it, and if this is something you deal with on an almost daily basis, there's every possibility you might want to talk about something related to it, at which point my only option would be to awkwardly stare at you before admitting I have nowhere near the level of knowledge necessary to understand the basics of what you're trying to tell me.
@@werewolf4358 Oh yeah! I mean, I know that math can have a lot of obscure subject matter, but I acknowledge that most stuff I study in math requires too much exposition to clarify the terminology used to non-mathematicians, which is why I often avoid talking about math stuff with people who aren't math people. Even mathematicians will get annoyed by each other because, admittedly, some of them will talk about their subfields to each other and assume, since they're talking to another mathematician, that they'll be understood. I'm guilty of that, myself, since I study mathematical logic; and sometimes I'll mistake a term or concept as common to mathematicians which is actually something with which only mathematical logicians really concern themselves.
I only have an issue with how people in what are perceived as difficult subjects will be treated with this kind of mentality. As regarding the frequency with which it happens, I'd say it's about 50-50 whether people will respond like this. The other 50% or so will respond pretty normally; and of course, it's not too much of a bother, but it also gives me a hint of "Ehhhh... I kinda wish they didn't bring it up, because I almost expected the conversation to turn into this."

44:27 This is why y'all came for. The portal question.
TRUUUUUUUE
Holy shit you actually got Sean Carrol? That’s amazing. I’m a libertarian now. Unban me from the subreddit or else I’ll become an anarchist.
I love Destiny's reaction to Sean's explanation of the portal problem at the end. He explains it exactly how Destiny did right at the start of his 10 hour debate with chat. Destiny's very first intuition was the same as one of the greatest living physicists', must have felt so vindicating.
Now I have to learn quantum physics to debunk that portal answer...
Edit: Just learned all there is to know about quantum physics and the physics guy is right.
@RARAYAYA RAA how did it suck? It was a perfect explanation for an audience that doesn't understand physics. As a person looking through the portal seeing the box come toward them, do you really think the box just stops when it gets to you? That way you don't have to talk about conservation of momentum or frames of reference and shit like that
@RARAYAYA RAA yes hes doing that especially for the people who dont understand Physics... thats the reason why. He assums that most people do not understand why and the explanation probably is not something We could understand in a Single conversation.
I dunno. I think he's wrong. I do agree if you were looking through the blue portal, it would look like the cube is flying at you at X speed but that doesn't mean the cube (stationary) will somehow gain kinetic energy to fly out like B. That's like saying if you shoot a gun, the frame of reference of the bullet is that the gun is escaping it at a extremely fast speed therefore the gun is going that fast even though it's "stationary" with recoil. Now if the platform below the portal is going up and the orange portal is stationary then yes, the cube will end up like "B" because you're exerting a force onto the cube and throwing it out.
@@Johnny-wv9cn But the gun is moving away from the bullet relative to it, speed is relative, nothing really is inherently stationary or moving, objects move only relative to eacother.
@@rpgwiz I used to be an Atard, but I thought about it exactly that way and it made me realize it's actually B
Destiny was neither created or destroyed in this debate
This is a wonderful interview. Im really impressed the way Destiny was able to ask engaging questions for Sean. 10/10 Would love to see more interviews like this.
Wow this is awesome! U made it Destiny! Gratz buddy.
First time I've seen Destiny fan-boy anyone, and he handles it very well. It's pretty eye opening in terms of how respective he is toward the many people he's interacted with over the many videos I've watched; he initially treats everyone as a person to respect, and only later during the interaction he decides to demean them. Best example I can give is the "ahmazin" guy. But generally he continues to give people the benefit of a doubt and respects them throughout their interaction with them.
One of the best guests so far loved the conversation

Prior to this, all I knew about Sean Carroll was from some of the topics we addressed in my philosophy of science class, and a debate he did with William Lane Craig. I remember, he was one of the few people to actually impress me when debating WLC; I could tell even then that he was a careful thinker. It's good to see him again, gonna check out his podcast
How did he get Sean Carroll on? No memes, this is amazing!

This level of guest fame is just a foreshadowing of the eventual Ben Shapiro interview/debate.
