    Thank you so much for sharing! We moved our betta from a 3.5 gal tank to a new 10 gallon. He was not enjoying the whole tank because of the flow. Slapped this on and he is now enjoying the whole tank!!!

    Yay! Thank you, an extremely simple solution to something I've been over engineering... lol The betta I have currently has been a rescue, with barely any fins when I first took over. He's made leaps and bounds so far, the water surface breakage is still stressful for the little dude. So hopefully this simple fix can help both of us.

    Great tip, exactly what I was looking for. So many other tips suggest things like restricting the pump intake using pantyhose or sponges, which reduces the overall flow (and therefore filtration), not to mention stressing the pump motor.
    I was definitely overthinking things when it was coming to baffle designs, though. This is great!
    Hopefully with this minor change I'll see my Betta being a lot more active.

    Got a Betta and never considered the idea that the filter they sold me alongside him would be the reason he struggled. The moment I made this change I noticed a change in attitude. The strong current was harmful to his fins and I'm seeing regrowth. Thanks for the video!

    LOL ! Patriot, great name -" actor betta model" haha he is stunning! These videos always make me laugh definitely the best on RUclips! Sorry about your red betta they get into everything but it is still sad. Aquaclear, my favorite filter also but I had a hard time with the plastic bottle baffle on some different filter models so I shoved a small sponge filter in the outflow. Thanks for the video!

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Coralocean! Glad you enjoyed it. I had to have him and my LFS held him for 2 weeks until I could get there. Guess I'll have to find him an agent to get him trained ☺️Yeah, no idea with that red betta...they do get into everything and he certainly ate something that was bad. I've cleared the tank of anything, so hopefully that doesn't happen to Patriot...and shoving a sponge filter in works too! I love most HOB's, but I think a lot of their flow is a bit strong. Thank you for the continued support and for checking out the video! (Patriot told me to tell you he is really good looking 🙄)

    Brilliant, and adorable.
    Now to find out how to DIY a spill extender, to have the spill go further out instead of straight down. To move the spill water away from the intake so it's not just moving the same water through the filter.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад

      R Ross - thanks for the kind words! Another idea/suggestion - how deep is your tank? You could try putting an extender on the intake so it reaches further down - as long as the intake is a 1/2 or so above the substrate that should work fine. I'm not sure what type of hang on back you have, but the Aquaclear (now owned by Fluval) filters generally extend far enough down - some other brands definitely have their intakes too high, in my opinion...

  • @deborahjeanne2141
    @deborahjeanne2141 4 года назад +1

    That was absolutely hysterical! I’ve had 2 Aquaclear filters - the first one died after 2 months, I stupidly replaced it with the exact same filter but have been unhappy with the water clarity in my 20g guppy tank. It’s not overstocked - there’s 12 guppies, 3 Otos and 3 Cory cats. Not big fish! I do WC every 5 days. The junk coming up in the vacuum was driving me crazy. I have a tidal 35 in my 15g betta tank, with a nob that controls the flow, and that tank is crystal clear, so I replaced the Aquaclear with a Tidal 55 - my 20g is tall and the Tidal 35 doesn’t have a long intake tube, but the Tidal 55 does, so I went with the bigger filter. Now the water in my guppy tank is as pristine as the water in my betta tank. The flow in my betta tank does not disturb my bettas. The one on the filter side actually hangs out under the filter and the water is relatively still. Having said that, the tidal 55 has a stronger flow and my guppy fry get knocked all over th e place if they get too close to the filter, so I’m going to use your water bottle idea for the guppy tank. I’m about to set up a 55G, I bought a tidal 70 for that tank. I plan on splitting up the guppies- males in the 55g, because fry are dropping like snowflakes. I’m also going to have a betta sorority in that tank - my LFS keeps his female bettas in the same tank, so the hard part for me is already done. I’m sure I’ll use the bottle idea on the Tidal 70 to keep the girls happy. Another great tip from you. Thank you!

      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад

      I hear the Tidals are great filters! Don't have any experience personally with them, but I've heard good things. Glad you enjoyed the video! :) The little water bottle technique is the best and cheapest way I know to baffle the water well. Should really help the fry as well!

    • @rods1597
      @rods1597 5 лет назад +1

      @@dmichaelsfishden One mod I made and this applies only to HOB's with flat covers like the Aquaclear. It was getting cumbersome when I needed to clean the baffle due to crud buildup so I use pins to attach it to the cover. I cut about a 1" x 1/2" rectangular notch on the side of the plastic where it attaches to the lid. I lay the plastic flat on the lid instead of having that cylindrical shape and use a clothes pin in the notch to essentially clamp down the plastic to the lid. You can cut away some of the baffle if it curls under too much. Just thought about putting some holes in the front part of the baffle so water can flow left, right and straight ahead. Again thanks for the idea.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  5 лет назад +1

      Rod - this is brilliant! So much better than my "duck tape." Really appreciate you sharing this - I'll have to rig up the same! If you don't mind, I am going to highlight your idea in the video description

      Do you have any photos of how you modified your marineland hob?

    • @rods1597
      @rods1597 4 года назад

      @@whateverwhenever_9987 Sorry I replaced the marineland with an aquaclear. Instead of tape you could try attaching a couple of double sided adhesive strips to the cover of the filter and stick plastic clothes pins to the strip with the mouth facing towards the front. Then you can clamp the baffle with the pins instead of using tape. This allows you to easily remove the baffle for cleaning. For the adhesive strips look up Command Water Resistant Refill Strips. If your marineland has the 2 separate covers then you could probably not use the front shield.

    Thank you! My filter made a strong current that kept pushing my betta down, but I tried the water bottle trick and it works pretty good. I'm slightly worried if the plastic is safe though, could it be toxic in some way?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад +4

      Britney - glad the video was helpful! I have some of the same concerns about the plastic. I don't think it is toxic as long as it is fairly new - I replace my baffle with a piece of a newer water bottle, just in case. So far, no adverse reactions and I've been doing this over 2 years 😀

The current was too strong even in the lowest flow setting, so I went back to the internal filter. Going to try this trick tomorrow with the HOB. I really want to use the HOB as it’ll give him more room in the tank and also probably provides better filtration than the internal filter.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад +1

      Hi Lizzy - Yes. I always use what we call a pre-filter sponge. I lost a lot of babies in filters years ago, so now, I always use a pre-filter sponge - they are super cheap, last quite a while, and it has the added benefit of giving good bacteria another place to grow on. Here is a link from Aquarium Co-Op where you can buy them:www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/sponge-filters Any local fish store should have them as well. I like the sponges because they do wear out over time, and they are really cheap to replace 👍 Hope that helps!

    Im using the waterfall to produce oxygen. Will this reduce oxygen on my aquarium? I have small 3 gallon community of guppy and molly without airpump. Is this hack ok?

    What is your recommended substrate for a planted tank? Another aquarium keeper youtuber said that for plants, you can use (strictly organic) planting soil under a layer of sand, but I'm not sure that's a great idea....but I need something as inexpensive as possible, and it seems like the substrates specifically meant for planted tanks tend to be crazy expensive, especially for larger tanks. I have a tall 20gallon.

    The only thing is that you gotta take it off and put it back on every time you clean the filter, which seems troublesome. Also, it’s not aesthetically pleasing.

    Hello, do you have any videos on how to clean a betta tank?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад

      Hi Lynne - I do have an older video on how to clean a tank - I used vinegar and some hydrogen peroxide -ruclips.net/video/GYgPUEE0aTg/видео.html
      it's an older video, but still relevant!

  • @robyd

    Thank you for this. Built a planted 10 gallon for my betta and he’s been eating in the mid section of the tank because the flow above is too strong. My hang on back filter came from an aqueon kit. I plan on adding celestial pearl danios (upgrading to a 20gallon) when my plants get bigger so I don’t want my beta to have to compete for food.

    How did you get your betta fish so comfortable with other fish?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  3 года назад

      They have different personalities. Some bettas work with others some don’t. It was a little trial and error. Fortunately, Patriot is a very kind Betta.

    Amazing idea thank you so much. I just bought a new filter for my beta tank and it’s blowing EVERYONE around. My beta lost 80% of his fins. Im hoping it’s just because the filter stress. Hoping this works. I added stress coat as well. Pray for my old man. He’s 5yrs old.

    Will there be enough oxygen for other inhabitants of my aquarium though?
    I got ancistrus, cory catfish and dwarf shrimp and naturally want them to be well and happy too.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад

      Yep! This still creates a lot of water movement/disturbance on the surface for oxygenation. If you feel you need a little more surface agitation to create oxygen, you could always add an airstone in the tank 😀 You can put the air pump and airstone on a timer so it runs at night. Hope that helps!

    Did this for my turtle tank as I'm getting a hatchling musk turtle so I didn't want such a strong flow. Plus my water is only about 3/4 so it also reduces the noise of the waterfall.
