The Wanderer Short Film

  • Maria is the daughter of a South African police legend. Her modern beliefs are challenged when she is called to investigate a murder at a rural village where the killer is supposedly non-human.
    The Wanderer is an AFDA 4th year graduation project. It was shot on 35mm film, as well as some digital, over a period of 10 days. The concept was derived from our culturally and socially diverse community in South Africa where belief systems play an important role. Also, horror/thriller short films are hard to come by so we thought we would give it a go. We hope you enjoy it :)

    This is really good Shaun. From the onset you got the tone right which insured that all the dense themes you explored in the film had integrity and depth. The mixture of superb acting along side a well grafted nostalgic, uncanny and mystical visual atmosphere was just gripping and effortlessly arresting. Your characters had an unexplainable resonance, a rare immediate familiarity that made me (probably others too) instantaneously invested and intrigued. I did however feel that some really good imagery was abruptly cut (I suspect time consideration was partly to blame) and at one time or two the music was not necessary in rhythm with the visual story. Also, at one or two parts in the film attempts to capture mystery or ambiguity ended up becoming loose ended and narratively inconsistent (or too deep that I missed the point, lol) . It's surprising that this film is only 24mins long because it is just so rich in issues and story and certainly refreshing in concept, scenery, themes and cast. Well done! This is truly artistic, provoking, complex and afrocultural and modern. Keep us posted on your projects!@shaunjames

    Hi Shaun
    I see the language used is mostly Venda, but that police Hardbody in the end is tagged Hartbeespoort (which also got me thinking the mountain range could be the Magalies)...see I grew up (in Ga-Rankuwa to be specific) and work (in Harties) in and around the area.
    The community on the side of the world speaks mostly Setswana...but there's also a number of settlements in and around the area. Is the a specific community of Venda speaking people in the area, or are all the actors outside people?
    If there is, where?
    #just-interested#

    • @FlailSnail
      @FlailSnail  10 лет назад

      Hey Ponitro, thanks for your interest in the film.
      Our intention was to keep the film non-specific, regarding culture, location, and beliefs. So yes there is a lot of Venda being spoken by the 'locals' but essentially the story could be set anywhere, at any point in time. Our actual location was Hartebeeshoek which is where the police car was form as you mentioned, but the concept and setting itself is open to the imagination. Oh and the actors were all form outside the area.
      I hope this answers your question :)

    Hi there Shaun, I happened to stumble across your film and really happy that I did and was thoroughly fixated throughout it. I'm currently a Durban based fourth year film student in the pre production stages of making my own short film. Is there any advice on how you went about getting access to police uniforms and your method of location scouting? Would mean a lot if you could share your wisdom :)

    • @FlailSnail
      @FlailSnail  7 лет назад

      Hi Travis. Sorry for not getting back to you, I somehow missed your comment and stumbled upon it now.
      The police uniforms were in fact costumes from a costume hire store. The vehicle however was pure luck. We were on a location scout there and the police arrived to see what we were doing. We asked if they could come back when we were making the film so we could use their vehicle. They said yes :)
      Location scouting was also a bit of luck. We just drove around, all over the place. When we finally came across our location we found out that the land was in fact owned by a farmer who lived across the road. We spoke to him and he agreed.
      Most of the time these things just happen if you keep at it! I hope your film is going well.
      Cheers

    i didn't like the Door that was written "Jesus" because it was like you were advertising him, and saying he is the answer on that situation....and if you were a muslim you will have written mohammad on that door....and if you were a chinese you would have written buddha, and if you were an indian you would have written any god from hinduism. that name symbolises white supremacy, just as muhammad is symbolising arab supremacy, same thing with buddha and chinese. so i will be happy if you stop advertising your culture.

    • @FlailSnail
      @FlailSnail  9 лет назад +6

      +Dion Sandile Thanks for your feedback Dion. The word "Jesus" was already written on the door when we arrived at the location. We decided to leave everything untouched as we wanted to keep the atmosphere as natural and unique as possible. The woman who lives there is Christian, and she is black South African, so I don't think she would agree that "Jesus" represents white supremacy. Also, what do you mean when you say "your culture." Just because a filmmaker places something in their film, it doesn't mean that he/she believes in it or takes it to be the truth. So I do appreciate your comment, but don't look into it too much, it wasn't planned at all :)

    • @disaman17

      i understand and i am sorry to be harsh, just that i was on the massive debate about religion and i happen to come across this film. that time i commented, i was not yet enlighten, but now i gave myself enough time to learn and currently am in the process of knowing between good and evil before i can blame or judge other religion...

      +Dion Sandile How does Jesus represent white supremacy Dion?

    • @SoulsSojourn
      @SoulsSojourn 8 лет назад

      +Dion Sandile If you look at the Sangoma's shrine you would realize that it reflects the different cultural influences Africans have come in contact with so far. Hardly can you find an untouched African culture. It is basically hybrid in many cases. The Jesus written on the door and the inside walls of the house should rather be read as representing the different ways by which Africans negotiate the daily problems besetting them.
