Man I am loving the regular AoE IV content. I was a little surprised when more popular AoE II YTers basically ignored AoE IV. But I am glad someone is doing AoE IV content. Keep it up muh man.
I like the effort Aussie is putting behind the new game, but I really hope he doesn't plan to transition out of AoE3. He has become a staple of the community.
Even if he does, as if it is a bad thing. I enjoy more AoE3 than AoE2 (upon which the AoE4 stands upon and built it's foundation on), but let's be frank - AoE4 is much better that AoE3.
@@MegaTVscreen It sounds that both AoE 2 and 3 players enjoy AoE 4 a lot. Of course there are players that won't change their favourite because it's just different but future is looking bright. People from all AoE games, from starcraft 2 and wacraft 3 and many other games, so many rts fans are just waiting for AoE 4. I only hope release version would be good so for example lack of ranked matchmaking worry me a lot sadly.
Great Idea and well put together Video Drongo, but It's way too early I think to be ranking a civ like this. I also see some of ur points like "English are Especially strong on water" - Which I find very hard to back up. Prelate allows HRE to get more wood early in order to get on water earlier, and China had bonuses for their ships to produce 200% quicker (even fishing boats). Farms are also pretty bad on water maps (at least in the stress test anyways) so they lose their huge eco bonus for water maps. Even Abbasids had cheaper docks and started with extra wood to get on water quicker and have much quicker boats which a good player would abuse with micro for example. The Water meta really had no time to develop and I hadn't even seen other players properly microing boats for example. It's fun to hear other players opinions though because we had such a short time in that version of the game it seems so many players had wildly different experiences. So I enjoyed hearing it for sure. I'm excited to hear what you have to say about HRE when that one comes out to see if you thought similiar ways to my thoughts on it. Thanks for all the awesome Content Drongo
I probably should have clarified that they the English are strong in water combat, obviously not for water booming. Abbasid / China are far superior. I don't think HRE water boom is particularly strong, you're going to be hitting your age 3 timing with a double dock opening irrespective of prelates IMO (I found that in every game I open double dock I am clicking up immediately to age III each time - perhaps it would make a difference with follow, but then saying that would be like saying HRE have the best archers in the game because the prelate gives them a better economy so they can subsequently train more archers - which I definitely don't accept. On Black Forest - Abbasid / China are top tier, then HRE, then British IMO - they obviously lack bonuses to take full economic advantage of the water. On Archipelago / Warring Islands, while their farming bonus isn't going to help a lot with their training of warships, when push comes to shove, I suspect you'll see a lot more value coming from the English +1 warship range and -10% warship cost, then say the -50% dock cost from the Abbasids.
@@AussieDrongo Yeah I love ur point about maps here actually. The maps seem so dependent on civ strength. I love how it's gonna make AoE4 be a game where if you main a civ you probably are gonna suck because the maps promote such vastly different ways to play (at least the maps we've seen so far). I can't wait to see how it plays out later though when players have more time to test stuff out. China seemed so complex that no one really figured it out yet.
Stresstest convinced me, and I almost only played the english for a) fast longbows and b) fast knights. I finally preordered yesterday and as I did, I just begun the bohemian campaign in AoE2 (you get "dawn of the dukes" DLC free or AoE2 if you preorder AoE4 on Steam). Take my sub for all that great content I've already watched!
If possible try to start aoe2 from lithuanian to polish to bohemian for last, as this is the only campaign series in AoE2 where each campaign is actually kinda tied with each other
Haha, I do give a damn! The intent was to find out which civilization would most likely win the developer poll and then not overlap with them, as to give you guys fresher content rather than content that overlaps

Hi Aussie Drongo! I am brand new to the age of empires series with only games in the Aoe4 open beta. I have lots to learn but have been watching all of your aoe4 videos and commentary which is greatly informative and helping me start learning the game. I just subbed to your RUclips channel and am appreciative of your videos to help people like myself. I look forward to the rest of the 7 civ videos in this series and also was wondering if you planned on making a new 8 videos after official release if the devs make some decent balance changes as well as rate based on viability and civ strength when the game releases and not just on design. Either way your videos are all great 👍 thanks for your time and dedication to making these!
I feel that the English got some unfair advantages with their economy - cheaper farms, 15% better harvest rate near mills, and producing gold out of farms seems crazy strong all together in a single faction (using less wood, getting more food and additionally getting gold). I'd rather see those bonuses split across different factions, for example, gathering gold from farms could be added later to a more southern European civ (similar to Bungurdian Vineyards from AOE2), and faster gathering could be an addition to something like the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which was known to be the "Granary of Europe" (although for a Commonwealth faction it would make more sense to have more food per farm, as these were fertile lands). On the other hand, I love how English Archers are a viable option also in the late game as long as the enemy doesn't invest too much into heavily armored units.
that is not correct, the english doesn't have unfair advantage, they just excel at food but that is not enough to carry them late game as they have bad cavalry/siege and mediocre archer/infantry vs others civil also their archer is not S tier, a single longbow not gonna carry them unlike the Abbasid which their camel archer can have use late game due to their speed and high health/the aura anti cavalry longbow are good when on top of the wall but easily counter by trebuchet, at late game they are not that good as the video mention
I think British use trebuchet to counter long range siege and it's upgrade meant to counter group of trebuchet or bombard as player don't spread siege out for easier defense on them.
Hmm. Curious point, unfortunately you would need a lot of Trebuchets as they don't do a lot of damage against units (rather than against structures). Could definitely be an idea though.
Well, wasn't many siege units get torch attack from melee units? Maybe siege unit armor is same as structure armor. Also, AOE4 is upgrade from AOE2 and in AOE2, siege unit is also weak against siege attack from siege unit.
I would not agree other civilizations are really "hurt" by the farm transition. Some guy on reddit posted the farming rates of all the resources and not only are farms infinite, but they also harvest at the same rate as sheep. You are actually hurt by going to berries as any civ other than Abbasids.
that's some nice stats. finally someone will explain to everyone how the chinese work most efficiently too, maybe lol. although i prefer everyone not know, don't let the secrets out!

I think they are all setup to have different eco bonuses i guess in time we will really see the tail of the tape. i dont think farms being half off is a huge deal considering you dont have to reseed farms so you only have to pay for it 1 time and the amount of gold you get really isnt gonna amount to much if you give up map control it will help for sure and if your floating 1000s of food then you probably have to many farms without enough production. I lean to english being 1 of the weaker civs I played against i was never scared of them maybe its just me. I enjoyed the video though well done cant wait to see the next 1.
Thanks for the feedback mate. Tax for China definitely on the weaker side. Half cost villagers for Abbasid definitely are strong but do fall off. Prelates for HRE are a huge powerhouse in the early game but also fall off toward the lategame (gather rate has mitigating returns because of drop off sites) - but I assure you the Regnitz Cathedral has a significant impact on my opinion on the HRE economy ;)
@@AussieDrongo I agree with the tax man but im gonna be honest with you half cost villagers never falls off if your on 2 tc and i can produce from 4 with the same food cost my economy is gonna blow your economy out the water i think if there is a #1 eco powerhouse its probably gonna be Abbassid, bonuses are great but if its 2-1 villager output then you are gonna need %100 bonus to match that.

13:00 i think you can get even more farms wiith bonuses around a mill. They don*t nead to be fully in the influence of the mill. So you could get 10 boosted farms from 1 mill. But i am not shure right now.
Most likely Abbasid, then Chinese, then HRE. The devs will be releasing their overview video for the HRE in the next 36 hours, so will give it some time after that :)
curious..is there a civ in AGE 4 that relies on actually spawning herdable animals (like the english were in age 3) and is there a civ that does not kill animals (like Japanese were in age 3) ?
It's like by professional league, the English would be one of the 'best' for a high-risk blitz tactic approach (ike how zerg rush usually works in SC tournaments). I'd be excited to see some pros if they can pull a very quick turn-over end game using this civ.
That would be the Rus -ssians- . Just check out the video where pros play Rus vs HRE. The Rus were born to rule the map with their First age scouts and what not.
@Aussie_Drongo You are filling in MUCH needed content for AOE4. Like we rely on Spirit of the Law for Age-2 you have been very reliable to get us the Age-4 content. Keep it up!
Great video, i'm looking forward to all of them. For the ribauldequin, their unique siege unit, i'd like them to buff it somehow so that it sees play. During the open beta i don't think i ever saw that one, neither from players or the AI. I'd like all units and techs to be viable somehow sometimes during the game.
Units have activated abilities? This is worrying to me. I hate strat games where it comes down to who can recycle all the abilities fast enough instead of actual tactics and strategies. "Arrow Volley: an activated ability that increases Longbowmen attack speed", do they pop some MDMA first? What exactly is making them fire faster?
In reality, lomgbowmen could only fire at their maximum speed for a limited amount of time due to the extremely high draw weights of longbows. They would typically pace themselves so they weren’t completely exhausted
@@austinwirtz2434 Well yeah but that is any time they are firing, they are not going to fire at below their max speed if they are in battle. Pointless...
@@Harrier_DuBois there are lots of times they would not be firing max speed, taking well aimed shots or conserving their strength or arrows. Battles could last all day. They would likely only fire at max speed in key situations like trying to break a charge etc. They would definitely get tired and their fire rate would slow down so having an ability where they fire as fast as they can for a limited time kind of makes sense
@@Harrier_DuBois well that would be completely broken game-wise and realistically you could probably only fire about 5-10 shots at that pace with a bow that actually does anything against opponents in armor before having to slow down or not be able to pull your bow anymore
@Aussie_Drongo Nice vid, and I've been enjoying your stress test matches. Minor correction, however: the Ribauldequin is not an English unique unit, and actually you can see which units are unique by the little logo in the bottom left of the icon (as on Longbowmen in your video). It's just that the English are the only civ we've seen with it so far. Another interesting one is the Rus' Cavalry Archer - it's listed on the website as a unique unit, but it wasn't listed on their civ card when I saw it a few months ago - nor does it have the unique unit logo on the icon card. I'm thinking that it may just be that only one civ (so far) has it, but it isn't actually intended as a unique unit solely for them. For example, if the Turks are added as a DLC civ then they'll probably get the Cavalry Archer as a unit - I'm assuming the Delhi Sultanate don't already have it, but it's possible they do and we'll find out soon. Thanks for all your work!
Question. Did anyone else notice the villagers for the English faction would say "build for they" sometimes when you build? Is it just me that thinks that's significant with all this pronouns nonsense these days? Genuine question.
All european civs should get unique lategame uppgrade for knights. I dont get it why knights wich is the european elite soldier is just a generic unit avaiable for everyone. Its like if the japanese samurai was given to all civs. Doesnt make any sense at all.
They might be the elite around that time. But not very distinguishable in function from one another. Apearance sure. But most werent noteworthy from one another. A man in a tin can from england is not that different from a man in a tincan with a sword in germany. Unique units however. Are actually very different as were their real counterparts. Makes a lot of sense to me.
@@SamuraiHonorWhat are you babbling about? Did you read everything i wrote? There where differenses between german, french and english knight. The english knight prefered to fight on foot, the french are famous for the charge and the germans used way different tactics and formations then the french. In the game, the knights for the asian civs are called lancers with same stats as knights and in history no asian or middle eastern civ had cavalry or other units with full suits of platemail. Knights where elite soldiers trained from a very young age and that warrior class is unique to europe, much like the mongols are famous for their horse archers and japan for their samurai
@@Ubeer85 You have a point actually, depending on the civ in question they should have vastly different costs and stat line ups. Knights should be expensive but very effective units and eastern lancers and cav should be much cheaper to compensate for lacking those things. Quality or quantity. I wish there was more uniqueness to each faction more then there already is but I suppose that would make it harder to balanced and potentially it would leave the devs with less ways to make other factions 'unique' later down the line with DLC.
@@Marth667 Finally someone else but me understand this. I agree about the balance but lets take a look at the abbasid dynasty. They have fantastic economy, good infantry and great cavalry. Not only does their camels inrease infantry armour but they also decrease dmg from cavalry. On top of that they also have lancers wich statwise is a knight. Chineese have fire lancers, great artillery and also the regular lancer. In my opinion, i think its unfair and the european knight need to be recogniced not only by the french. Either give eu civs better stats on the knights or superior lategame upgrade(s).
the english is too basic and has nothing unique or good vs others faction Chinese- Bee net, good unique units HRE-Strong and insane infantry Abbasid-Strongest late game with Camel archer+rider anti both cavalry and anti- cavalry unit such as spearman and having the strongest economic boom English has nothing except longbow rush and it is easy to countered by Outpost, literally same range as longbow and they cant kill it
I'd have to agree, they're a beginner civ so they're meant to be easy to use which is good and all but how do they compete with other factions which are harder to use but also have better benefits and more importantly more unique units to diversify their strategies. English have like you said only the longbow rush which might pick off a vil here and there but generally once a tower goes down they smack that rush back. Dark age man at arms? Garbage, someone will out boom you and crush your assault so you must all in to win with this suicide strat. Long bowmen as we saw in the footage that aussie showed, lost to quite convincingly to handgunners so while they're the best archer, they're not the best ranged unit. They have ONE unique unit. ONE. Every faction has at least two. English once the meta is discovered won't be used at all, which is a big disappointment since they're iconic.
The English not getting the Culverin makes zero sense since the French and then the English are the two notable peoples to first widely adopt the use of a long barreled Cannons (which is what a Culverin is). And losing it for the Ribauldequin is just insult to injury since it's a pointless unit.

curious..is there a civ in AGE 4 that relies on actually spawning herdable animals (like the english were in age 3) and is there a civ that does not kill animals (like Japanese were in age 3) ?
This series is excellent! I look forward to the rest of this series
Nice video
It's like by professional league, the English would be one of the 'best' for a high-risk blitz tactic approach (ike how zerg rush usually works in SC tournaments). I'd be excited to see some pros if they can pull a very quick turn-over end game using this civ.
That would be the Rus -ssians- . Just check out the video where pros play Rus vs HRE. The Rus were born to rule the map with their First age scouts and what not.
I literally love you
Please, can you make video about french?
English vills in this game are practically Courer de Bois from AoE3
Great vid, looking forward to the next one:)
imo this would be better in a 5 min video
@Aussie_Drongo You are filling in MUCH needed content for AOE4. Like we rely on Spirit of the Law for Age-2 you have been very reliable to get us the Age-4 content. Keep it up!
Great video, i'm looking forward to all of them. For the ribauldequin, their unique siege unit, i'd like them to buff it somehow so that it sees play. During the open beta i don't think i ever saw that one, neither from players or the AI. I'd like all units and techs to be viable somehow sometimes during the game.
Australians: English Prisons - S Tier!
Great overview. ❤️
Cool Video! I'm looking forward to the next :)
Good stuff man!
Thanks dood
I want abassid dood
Spirit of the law for aoe4😂
This civilization intro is overpowered.
why no walls and towers anymore?
I can't wait for the Chinese.... I think they look cool
Where are the english subtitles for this video?
Hopefully the channel blows up with AOE4 release, loads of great content
@@austinwirtz2434 In a life or death situation, which is every battle in aoe, you would be firing at max
@@Harrier_DuBois well that would be completely broken game-wise and realistically you could probably only fire about 5-10 shots at that pace with a bow that actually does anything against opponents in armor before having to slow down or not be able to pull your bow anymore
I get bombard Every game with knights horse, what to do
nice vid
@Aussie_Drongo
Nice vid, and I've been enjoying your stress test matches.
Great idea focusing on the game design Balance changes won't affect this video much!
That's a very odd looking HRE you got there.
Hey google, define bamboozle.
Navy is C tier but you say they are strong on water maps. How is that so?
He said a tier
Can you imagine? There is no Byzantine Empire in AoE4. Outrageous!
Heresy!
So the English are pretty much like the Britons in AOE2. Very hard to push with and very hard to push against.
You're still playing AoE4, aren't you?
Haha, unfortunately it closed! I play it in my dreams though
@@AussieDrongo Bud, I've been obsessing about different HRE strats in my head. I feel you.
Is your voice slightly hoarse or are you going for a more rugged sound for aoe4?
This isn't the HRE!
Berkshire is pronounced Bark-shur
This is as egregious as when I had to say Gloucestershire in King Lear.
Why do the place names lie about their pronunciation?
Question. Did anyone else notice the villagers for the English faction would say "build for they" sometimes when you build? Is it just me that thinks that's significant with all this pronouns nonsense these days? Genuine question.
Little bit premature? Game isn't even out yet. I guess you're trying to get in there before Spirit does.
Mate, I know it's spelt monk but it's pronounced "munk"
Noted. Will try to practice before the next video
Either give eu civs better stats on the knights or superior lategame upgrade(s).
the english is too basic and has nothing unique or good vs others faction
Chinese- Bee net, good unique units
HRE-Strong and insane infantry
Abbasid-Strongest late game with Camel archer+rider anti both cavalry and anti- cavalry unit such as spearman and having the strongest economic boom
English has nothing except longbow rush and it is easy to countered by Outpost, literally same range as longbow and they cant kill it
They somehow managed to make the most uninspired, uninteresting civ in the AoE history
