This is my country I wouldn’t know how to leave or live somewhere else. I remember so many times throughout the years wondering how I was so lucky to live here. I think it is so sad watching my country crumbling because of the greed of one small group of people. And the uneducated people who support him.
Just recently got back from several weeks in the UK. I loved it but can never explain how good it felt to get back home. I am Native American and I am strongly rooted in the land. I live on the Missouri River and love this country so very much. I am devastated by what is happening. But I am willing to continue to be a strong advocate for our citizens. Sometimes I feel like a little drop of water in an ocean but collectively an ocean is powerful. I hope and pray.
All those who think of leaving are those who are needed most when it might come to a new election. Who knows? If the degree of voter fraud becomes unveiled as massive, why not declare a state of emergency from President Biden's side? The fraud is not supported by technical means but by psychology which makes it just as toxic. Unqualified politicians in office, while the Nation is supporting the defense of a democratic nation, involved in the most serious war since 1945 in Europe? State of Emergency.
My child needs brain surgery as he has a severe condition thats rare.. And we are afraid to go through with it because we can't rely on medical insurance next year with trump. And we are in Texas. I hate it in this country now. And my son doesnt deserve what this country voted for. My husband works for federal govt. So who knows if his job is on the line. We all voted Kamala. We tried. Now too many people will suffer because of the ignorance in this country.
Yes I'm Canadian and its ridiculously expensive to live here. The housing shortage is horrible. My son and his family have moved back in with us so they can save for a down-payment on their first house. They both have good jobs and work hard. It's unbelievable they make good money and the cost of living is so high you can't save .
You look great today despite all the craziness going on. I am very fortunate to live in Seattle with like minded souls. I am hunkering down in the US for now. We evaluated options but there are water, healthcare access, extreme weather pattern concerns than where we are located. Of course, there is instability pretty much everywhere.
Im clearing out my storage unit and downsizing my life. Im much more motivated since the disappointed election. Im planning on leaving as soon as i am able to Researching where to go and have learned a lot from you Whimsey! Ty!🎉
Actually I left long ago when trump was first around. Brazil is wonderful but also had a period with Bolsonaro who was just indicted for plotting to kill a judge that tried him before!! Come on America, you can do it tooo!🙏🙏🙏
Doctors, scientists & nurses in demand here in uk, or there’s Canada, Australia. Why would any medical professional stay in America? From Dorset uk.🙏🕊️🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇦🇦🇺👼
Yes, we have friends as well but there is a huge adjustment based on their weather patterns. I suggest anyone interested to make sure they live where there is less risk. Our friend are working with an architect who is trying to design a hurricane proof home but it is challenging and costly. There is so much off shore wind which carries salt from the ocean, they cannot grow anything which has been disappointing. (They had 5 acres in the states and know what they are doing.) Having said all that, they are VERY happy there.
It really bothers me that Americans want to leave and give up on the US and not fight with the rest of us for our democracy. Well, they can just retire wherever they move too, I'm sure funeral costs will be cheaper there too.
You can’t blame people who are afraid of being deported, losing their jobs. 75 % of People working for the government were told they will lose their jobs. People are afraid of losing Social Security and Medicare. People that belong to LGBTQ community are afraid. Read Project 2025. Unions workers will be fired. Public School System dismantled. My daughter is on disability and my son is on Affordable Care Act. He has health problems. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz were building American great and helping the poor and middle class. Now under Trump and Project 2025 we are not safe.
I'm with you. I wanted to move to Mexico a few years ago, but out of fear of the gangs and violence nixed those ex pat locations. Now, in 2024 I'm in that state of mind again. Will watch your moves closely. Keep us posted.
My largest concern is for the future of Social Security. If I sell my home here and relocate to another country, then DJT reduces or completely destroys SS, I could not survive there and would have no way home…not that I could survive here, either, under that scenario. My second concern is for our fur babies. Two out of three of our cats are quite old. We’d never be able to surrender them in order to move, but simply aren’t confident they would be accepted into a rental situation. I pray for the enlightenment of those who still support “Jim Jones”, for they know not what they do.
I have the same issue with two cats that are old and a husband that doesn't want to leave. If he were on board, I would be packing and preparing to leave now and find a way to take the cats. I feel trapped and i don't like it.
I feel blessed to live in a blue city in a blue state. I also have a rent-stabilized apartment. All my friends who left the city wanted to return but were priced out of the market.
Harrison Hot Springs BC welcomes American retirees. Stunning views, serene wilderness, safe, warmer weather, American dollar stretches far. Only 3/4 hour to US border, and 1 1/2 hour to Vancouver International Airport
We retired in Mx. 3 1/2 years ago. We are living on our Social Security only. We pay 1000 US a month for rent. In Mexico prices have gone up but still much better than the US. You can definitely live here for 2500 and up. depending on how you want to live. Food is very affordable. We don’t have a car we don’t need one. Transportation is very affordable.. We live in Mazatlan and also Ajijic. Lots of Expats
Thank you for all your research - super helpful even though I've already skipped out to 317 sq ft in Paris! Awfully small! I am feeling hopeful that even in datrkest moments ahead some truths will be revealed xo Love to all.
I feel it appropriate to add today here that I’m disgruntled with the health care costs in usa. Im hoping to get nothing in commissions in January from my sales job so I can go on the cheaper plan. It’s Kind of pathetic that working hard costs more in usa.
I want to leave but my husband doesn't want to right now. He says we have invested too much in this house and our life here. I am retiring from the federal government in March 2025. I told him it depends on how bad it gets here and I think he will change his mind if Medicare and Social Security go away or is cut to the point we can no longer afford to live here. We could sell everything and be set up for life in another country. I am looking at Albania. Was never on my radar before until I saw a video from expats who have knowledge of different countries. They said you can move there for a year and live before you have to apply for a VISA. I am most concerned about our loss of all the freedoms we have grown up with and have taken for granted. America has become dystopian. I hate it here and I am depressed every day since this election.
I have a friend who moved to Costa Rica this year and she took her two dogs with her. They were in carriers that fit under the seats. Even for Mexico it’s not too complicated. She is still settling in and loved it. She is there on a temporary visa which means every 6 months she needs to cross over to whatever state is closest (can’t remember) get a stamp in her passport, spend the day, cross back and she’s good for another 6 months. Cost of living is low and the weather is beautiful. It was a lot of work clearing out her house and selling everything.
I relocated to Mexico in 2018. It's getting harder to move here. The requirements for temporary or permanent residency have increased significantly over the past few years. You have to show $4600 monthly income for a temporary and considerably more for a permanent residency visa. Mexico is not as cheap as it once was. The cost of homes, rents, and food have skyrocketed here. Partly due global inflation and the huge influx of Americans and Canadians driving up demand.
I moved to Mexico 5 years ago. You omit Guadalajara at your peril. It is the second largest city in Mexico. We get the refugees fleeing Vallarta, San Miguel, Chapala etc. It is a wonderful city and far cheaper than many you have mentioned.
I came from Nicaragua more than 30 years ago, and now that my retirement is approaching, I think I will return to my homeland. I have called the United States my home, but it is becoming very difficult to live here. :( By the way, pink looks very good on you, Dr Whimsy... :)
I beg to differ with you. I have been there many times and there are very many safe places. Retirement home are beautiful and staff treat you like gold. Believe me I was treated better in Mexico than in the USA truthfully.
I strongly don't like the Nomad Capitalist. His version of 'if they don't treat you right' is really how to avoid paying taxes and supporting our government. His gig is not about helping poor people retire reasonably.

You didn't mention Portugal to move to. They are very welcoming to Americans, good health care, and many good veterinarians in the Lisbon area. Not to be unkind but Jamaica has far too much unrest to think about. Also I had more than one friend that moved to Mexico and it must have been the wrong place, as drug cartels take no prisoners they just kill people. People must be very careful where they choose to live. Just like here in US.
