  • Hey all, today's video tries to emulate the paint mixing experience of traditional media using the "scrap" and "view" tools in Artrage. I hope this prompts some ideas and gives you all something to experiment with! I would love to know if you have a better solution. Please let me know in the comments.
    Also, Please check back soon... I hope to post a lot more content in the next couple weeks for all of you digital painters and artists... I have a lot of ideas that are ready to share!

    Hm, I know, I'm a bit late to the party but here are my two cents.
    I tried to do what you did on the scrape but I did it right on the actual canvas. This way the brush size is identical and the paint looks and behaves the same. You just have to define the canvas a bit taller or bigger than the actual painting and use the additional space as mixing pallet. If you run out of space, use the selection tool and drag the paints to a different spot. If you don't use a mixed color anymore, just erase it or overpaint it with whatever your canvas background color is.
    Have a great day and happy painting.

    I stopped using scrap because the things you said here, so I do it on the canvas instead (I make some room on the canvas for me to mix colours, like on the side). While I do have to do it again every painting, I got used to it easily. Probably because I "think slower" when I paint, like consciously slowing down when i got to painting phase, so I don't feel it slowed me down much. Anyway, I enjoyed you contents here on the channel, keep up the good work. Cheers!

    Daniel last ; SHARE with the devs! :D But was going to say if you try the docked mode and dock the "Toolbox" and have brush sizes preconfigured there, maybe tap there in toolbox to get a faster resize? Dunno if that will work but was thinking about the issues.

    You know what I'd really like to have in AR... (a bit off topic but...) I'd like to be able to rotate palette knife with mechanism like increasing brush size. Could be something like hold ctrl and drag. My workflow with palatte knife would be more fluent. Thanks for the vid :)

    ive done a similar thing with a snapshot of the Zorn pallet and colour picked off of that, a proper mixing pallet is something thats always been missing...Also could you imagine if we could put 2 colours on a brush at the same time and they mix naturally as we use.. think I could be asking too much there lol

    I think I know what it is... Are you using windows ink or wintab as a input method? Just change settings for input device in artrage to use wintab and don't use realtime stylus option. That should be enough, but if not, you can also adjust the settings in xp-pen driver, uncheck the windows ink it's so annoying in so many programs

      @@DanielIbanez Did this work? I'm curious because those settings are mysterious. I see them everywhere "use wintab" or "wacom" or whatever. I had issues with Krita before and my Huion Kamvas draw-on tablet thing, but never figured it out. So curious to see if that sorts you?

    Hola Daniel, no sé si hablas español...no consigo crear con ArtRage6 una paleta de mezclas como la que nos muestras en el vídeo. Creo el lienzo blanco y pongo los colores, pero no consigo hacer las mezclas simulando una paleta real. A ver si me pudieras ayudar. Gracias.

    It is a pity that it is not possible to transfer the color from the palette, since it is not pure, but with impurities of other colors, as it happens in reality, then a good range of several shades is obtained, so I do not see the point in the possibility of mixing paint, but transferring exclusively a pure color or shade, in in this case, it is more appropriate to use a color wheel or take colors from a reference photo(

  • @grymmjack

    Also what size and resolution is the scrap? Maybe the brush resizes because the canvas is different size? *shrug*

    • @DanielIbanez
      @DanielIbanez  2 года назад

      I couldn't find any of the stats on the scrap. It just seems to be a mysterious surface. There is no way to change the settings or to do anything to it. I'm going to ask Artrage about it tonight

    Daniel ... I appreciate your effort but, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, I would love to see an actual paint mixing palette/dock, in Rebelle & Artrage.
    I've tried a myself. It's something that has to be made. Only Painter has a paint mixing palette & it only works so well.
    * I think the issue is: with digital painting, you have unlimited amounts of almost every tube of colored paint, that you would have to buy in a store traditionally.
    The other half of the issue is: how many people would actually use a paint mixing palette, to warrant Artrage (for example), to make it? Most kids growing up today have never used actual paint.
    All said, it's still a feature I would love to see. Especially, with everyone arguing about what color wheel is best. A for effort mate 👍

      You're right again! So many good points in your response. Thank you.
      After making that video, I kept thinking about the educational uses of having a good functional paint palette in the software. I know it would be useful in teaching my students about warm and cool and about color theory and about many other things.
      Selfishly, I never feel comfortable picking a dark value from a color picker or a reference image. It only ever feels right when I mix my sap green alizarin crimson and French ultramarine together... Somehow that's the only black/dark value I really love! And after so many decades of painting traditionally, I just can't look at a sky without seeing the tubes of paint that I would use to make that sky color. It's an entirely different set of skills. But I do think it would have value even for kids who have never painted traditionally before. Maybe someone is watching this video at the company who can do something about this! That would be such a blast

      @@DanielIbanez ... I agree 200% with how useful it would be having a mixing palette for educational purposes. And don't get me wrong... I feel people like you & I who paint traditionally, would love this feature & use it.
      And yes, I "see paint names" also. Like the metric system, I prefer the European naming of colors, opposed to the typical American way. With the European system, you know what group a color is part of, what temperature it is, ect.
      In all serious, I not only prefer the European color system but, a lot of traditional art products also. Faber-Castell, W & N, Conte a Paris, ect. There are some good American brands but, the color naming system stinks! Periwinkle blue? Seriously? And don't get me started on violent vs. purple.
      Point being... a paint mixing palette would be very useful in Artrage & Rebelle.
      Sorry, if I was a little off subject. I was messing with my Copics yesterday & the Japanese like naming colors the American way too. Drives me nuts.

    * Rebelle 5, will have actual paint mixing!!! This is separate from the "blending colors," most software uses. Break out your color wheels! The video is up on their page.
    * Btw... I bought Artrage Vitae and I am not impressed. 98% waste of money. Some better or improved features/tools would have served us much better.
    * If Rebelle improves the oil painting engine and we all know they will, plus add oil painting glazes, without having to use watercolors, Artrage will be in some trouble.
    Even if they add knew features/tools, It will be a tough sell to ask people to shell out even more money, without waiting a full year; especially for those who own Artrage 6 & bought Vitae... unless they make it a free upgrade.

    Daniel, You can't complain about your paint not flowing well enough when your Thinner slider is at Zero. Increase the Thinner value and all will be right in the World.

    • @DanielIbanez
      @DanielIbanez  2 года назад +2

      I don't know about your version, but my thinner slider doesn't make the paint more fluid it just makes it more transparent! I really think the software needs a true thinner which would let the paint be way more liquid!
