Thanks I enjoyed the pointers on the video. Made my very FIRST project - farmhouse desk. I tweaked it a bit - made it 24x48 and made the bottom shelf a sliding shelf for my printer and raised the top shelf up to accommodate the printer below. I had NEVER made a pocket hole and now after 116 of them I feel like a pro hahaha. My late husband was a trim carpenter so I guess from watching him on some Santa projects for the grands I picked up how to use some tools. I may have found a new hobby! Thanks for an informative video!
Great video. I'll be building this desk for myself and this will be a big help. I appreciate all the detail especially regarding the taste of the stain. Someday I hope to find one with a pleasing taste. :)
Thanks for the handy video! Kids are remote schooling, needed desks and all the local stores were either sold out of basic options or way out of our price range. Building a couple using your format, thanks so much for sharing! Hope you have a happy and peaceful day. -Dan
Great tutorial - I’ve decided to make this desk for my craft room/office with a shelf section at each end as it’s going to run almost the length of one wall. Your video has helped me to visualise the steps much more clearly and I loved your dowel tip for filling the pocket holes - so much cheaper than buying the kreg dowels and sits perfectly flush. I don’t know if I have the patience to paint and finish my desk with as many coats as you did - the top will be stained and probably have 3 coats of poly and I will zinser the base before painting.
@@TurntasticWoodDesigns can I ask your opinion? I’m building this desk to the length of 2880mm (approx 113”) to run the length of a wall in my upstairs office. As I am using 2 end units, do you think it would work ok to build each end unit, cut, drill pocketholes and paint the stretcher and brace pieces then finish putting the desk together upstairs, joining the 2 end units then adding the prefinished desktop? There is no way we would be able to move the desk upstairs - even just the base - if we put it all together in the garage.
Thanks for the great video. Inspired me to start my desk build. Got my Kreg system today and started this evening. Looking forward seeing to using this desk.
Good morning, I was watching your video and I was very fascinated by the construction technique. One thing I didn't understand though. How did you fix the two shelves. I saw that he stuck them inside the structure but then you can't see them as fixed. Did he by any chance make some pocket holes from the underside of the shelf to the lateral sides? Thank you
Thank you for this video. Going to build one myself In a few days. My wife wanted a stained desk all around in a washed gray color. What will the pine knots do if they aren't treated as you describe and only stained? Do you have any other suggestions to allow for quails staining of pine or would re recommend another species of wood?
how are your 2x4s so straight with sharp edges? No way they were bought at a big box store. The sides on those are round. It doesnt look like they were ran through the jointer or they would be thinner.
Great looking desk. I’m a newbie and I hear a lot that using pocket screws instead of table top fasteners for connecting the top with apron can later cause cracks on wood because of contracting due to weather changes?
Is there a way to make this desk without the Kreg pocket setup? I know that is probably the best for looks and such. But can I replicate this design with screws and glue and maybe a few metal corner brackets?
I am planning on building this desk but am considering a couple of modifications. The addition of a short drawer above the shelves to hold pencils and the like. I am also considering adding keyboard drawer for an ergonomic keyboard setup. Any thoughts on the best the best way to make these changes would be useful.
Researching for a desk I’m building. Curious- how did you account for movement of your top? Pocket holes will not allow for shrinkage/expansion. Are you showing any cracks or warping in top?
I am currently making a video of this same desk. I hope my video will be as helpful and informative as yours. It makes me feel better knowing Im not the only one to use my thumb when using my driver 1:43.
My sister-in-law likes this style, and asked me to build one (two). She only gave me a photo of the end assy, and likes the X. Still in the middle of construction. It's similar in design, but not exactly. I'm not using pockets. Yours came out good. Curious about your method of attaching the solid wood top, with pockets. Have you allowed for environmental changes in humidity? It seems to be a concern. Thanks for posting. Nice job on the video.
If your top is made fro air dried wood the expansion/contraction will not be a problem. If you are using kiln dried wood, you will want a different method to attach the top.
The first one of these I made the X was 3 pieces ( a long and 2 shorts) . but I made a second desk where I did the X using half lap joints and I liked it better.
Great and informative video. I've watched it a few times now and have bought the lumber to start the project. May I ask what brand and color paint you used for the base?
Hi there. Desk looks awesome. One question. I'm about to put the top of desk on. Does it have an overlap on all the edges, or just the front and flush on sides and back.
@@whitesox9671 I went over the painted surfaces with water based poly and on the top I used oil based poly. water based dries very fast, but oil based is more durable.
It's a great project. It needs to finish well after all the time spent on it. I used Poplar for the top and it came out great. Now for the finish. Thanks again for the video.
Just wonderful, I've been looking for "build baby furniture" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Venoffison Wooden Exploration - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my colleague got excellent results with it.
I know this is a silly question, but how did you determine the angle at which the x detail is cut? Everytime I cut it, the angle is off. My corners are square. Since it is a rectangle, I can't seem to get it to fit.

Really like the look of this desk, and appreciate the dry humor even more.
I like that pocket hole hide trick with the dowels.
I made the same desk as a gift for a friend. My tip was red oak with walnut stain. Turned out awesome.
Thank you very much for sharing!
Now I want to know what brake fluid tastes like..... 😂😂 fantastic video!!

Hello, it looks great! What is the miter cut angle for the “x”s ?
just clamp your board and just draw line where they meet can sneak up on your line as you cut it check it while you do it is how i do my x’s
How long will the wood glue last for the desk top? Is there a danger that will ever come apart?
Do you have a link to plans?
How much do you think it weighs completely assembled?
Hello. An you list the length of all cuts and post a link please. I can’t find the link

I made this desk for my daughter and turned out beautiful. But this desk's plan is way too tall for a kid or even for small adult like me 😉.
Could anyone recommend a nice hutch for the rustic version?
Can you share a little more detail on how you measured the angle cuts for the X. I am having trouble lining them up.
I just laid the boards in place and traced them with a pencil
Great and informative video. I've watched it a few times now and have bought the lumber to start the project. May I ask what brand and color paint you used for the base?
It has been a while so I don't remember the paint brand/color. The important thing is a shellac based primer.
Hey Bill, nice desk. How did you join the ash planks? Looks like they're glued, but did you use any other fasteners?
Pete Shepherd They are joined with Titebond Ii wood glue only
I'm still unclear how the shelves attach? Seems like they are missing support. Just need to see the underneath to understand please. Thanks.
They are attached using pocket screws on the under side of the shelves into the frame.
Turntastic Wood Designs thanks sir for the quick response.
Where exactly did you place the pocket screws into the X braces? Looks wonderful.
Bill Albus The pocket holes are on the inside where the pieces meet. With the dowels for plugs, you cannot see them.
Do you have plans for this with drawers on the side and a long thin drawer in the middle?
No l don't. I used the plans from the site mentioned in the description
What’s the dimensions of the desk?
thanks for the video,be careful about ordering the plans from handmade haven she is unfortunately not someone you want to deal with.
and it said that the name is marcus sarazin but it is his doughter!!!!!!
Can you please explain how did you do the X legs?
I used pocket screws
I can't find the link to the plans...

Where do you get 2x4s with such sharp corners. The 2x4's at my home center have much more rounded corners, intended more for construction I'm sure.
I actually bought 2×6 and cut them down for the sharp corners
@@TurntasticWoodDesigns Did you cut the 2x6 down to actual 2x4 or 1.5 x 3.5 dimensions?
