  • I am pretty excited to release my 5th video in my lake breakdown series. I spend roughly 26 minutes discussing core features and hot spots of the beautiful Allegheny Reservoir (Kinzua) in Pennsylvania. I am pretty proud of the work that I put in for this particular video because even though its lengthy, it’s very detailed. I discuss core features of the lake like inlets and bays, timber structure, man-made structure and creek channels. I review hot spots and provide detailed information on where to find certain species throughout the lake. If you fish the Allegheny Reservoir (Kinzua) in Pennsylvania, this video should help you locate and catch more fish!

    "More difficult lake to fish" is definitely no understatement.
    Last July, for five days, and working over 33 miles of shoreline, only turned up two undersize smallmouth. 😅

    You did an awesome job on this video Ryan. RUclips 'rs cannot appreciate just how valuable this insight is for this location. I just got back from my first canoe / camping trip last weekend in Sugar Bay. From a satellite image this reservoir was daunting. This location has shale banks, and no cover, no weeds, no structure, no shade in sight. Where to fish? After reviewing your video I downloaded fishing maps to see if I could find any help and found that the bottom did have numerous topographic features to focus on as you noted. The Cabela's fishing department guide familiar with Kinzua recommend the Strike King 3 1/2 in. Coffee Tube in Natural Goby with a 1/4 oz. tube head or a Z-Man Finesse TRD.
    We ended up with not spending much time on the water this trip due to the "virus-party" crowds of jet skis and pontoons but did catch some small bass from the bank. These were mostly on a third cast per location and done.
    This is a big lake which will take us a lot of casts to make more predictable. Your video helped quite a bit to help get us started.
    Other than that next time I will also prepare a lure selection for fishing on a rocky bottom.

    Ive always good fishing in the hodge...its got that mix of shallow and deep mixed with a run. I caught a 30 inch Tiger at the back end on a plastic frog and I've got pike slightly further up the bay on the steep side...I got 20ish feet deep fast casting toward the shore and bringing a large lure toward the middle of the bay controlling speed to not hit bottom for the first 20 or feet from the shore

    Awesome video i LOVED IT! the pike fishing is amazing here in any part of the zoo ranging from sept/oct. Whenever the water turns all the way through early june, i am a bank yanker as you say lol, we do very well for pike all through the seasons rigging up rainbow trout, brook trout and perch as deadbait and large suckers although i will say all of our larger pike come off of any and all of the deadbaits. With that said any and almost all of the musky we catch come from the live sucker baits as i really think musky dont really eat deadbaits too much. Willow bay, sugar bay and dunkles seem to be where we find an over abundance of northerns but dunkles by far sends the big boys out to play. Again awesome video thanks for sharing!

    Nice video! I have fished Kinzua many times in my boat and in my experience trolling early and late was the ticket. HOT N TOTS trolled in the 10 to 15ft depths seemed to produce the best for walleye and bass. The key was trying to get the lure to tap bottom which I believe helped the fish find the bait easier when they were pulling water. When they don't pull water fishing can be very tough. Also...October is an awesome month to fish smallmouth on topwaters in the backs of the bays. Kinzua got some real tanks and thet are personally my favorite fish to target.

    Do you have any tips for fishing at Webb’s Ferry boat launch? I’ll be in that area this week and was wondering how the fishing was off of that dock

    • @FishingPAwithRyanRead
      @FishingPAwithRyanRead  3 года назад +1

      Unfortunately I do not have recent information on that launch or the lake , depending on the water level , it may or may not be fishable. Looking at the water level on USGS sites can really help you determine if it’s worth fishing from shore. Dock fishing can be good , I’d start with live bait first and see if anything is around, maybe shiners or night crawlers off the bottom.

    Hittin Sugar Bay trolling flutter spoons off planers for staged browns and rainbows. Theyll run the creeks here soon. Lake run trout will always run to their place of origin in the fall through winter to spring. Theyre not particular to structure moreso to baitfish and temperature.

    • @FishingPAwithRyanRead
      @FishingPAwithRyanRead  5 лет назад +1

      Angelo Gazzara thanks man, I appreciate the comment and the feedback! The jig head weight is sort of something I play by ear, it depends on the water depth or the system I’m fishing. I usually go with 1/8 to 1/4 ounce for most lakes and water depth up to 15ft to 20ft. I do like the 1/2 ounce or 3/4 ounce for rough days and moving water like on rivers. As far as the body, I’m assuming you mean the trailer? I use medium to large shiners usually. I like to use bigger baits for the profile. Hopefully I answered the question!

    The locals call kinzua lake the Dead Sea, I can see why . Army Corp of engineers made an ecological desert by leaving no structure and vertical cliff shorelines, sparse if any waterfowl habitat, on 21000 acres! There is very little shallow water and no gradual transitions. Your in 30 feet of water 6 feet out from the shore in most of the lake. Hard fishing indeed, and you forgot to mention all the crazy boat, water skiing and jet ski traffic. Seemed like I'd find few fish way over here and way over there, but never anything consistent or repeatable. I fish on the middle Allegheny river now with great results. Good to know about the man made structure, it was never in place when I fished it. Something to try if I ever fish it again.

    • @CrayOutoors
      @CrayOutoors 2 года назад +1

      In addition to the man-made structure in PA, the Seneca Nation has been adding lots of structure every year to the NY side of the Reservoir where most of the fish spawn in the spring. Its been a real help for walleye, crappie, and smallmouth recruitment. It's still a challenging place to fish but the Zoo is one of the few bodies of water in Western NY and PA where the fishing has actually been getting better over the past 10 years and not worse.

      Honestly if you just wanna catch fish , I’d go with shiners or fat head minnows. You could always get a few worm harnesses and drop some night crawlers on em and drop em to the bottom and drift , that works for me well. Go with a ugly stick lol 50-60 bucks and they are decent for how cheap they are ...
