You have enthused me. Gauguin is still not one of my favourites, but I am appreciating more of his qualities.... and some great images by his fellow post-impressionists. Than you for a fine and stimulating talk.
I wish I had lived in those days. Art seemed so easy. Today the standards are so high to be ranked as someone remarkable, yet alot of it can simply be automated.
Gauguin painted his own life and adventures with a bold colourful brush, but he was a bully who victimised his own wife (a kind and intelligent lady) both physically, verbally and emotionally. According to his own son Emil ''When I was 10 years old, I saw my father bloody my mother's face with his fist.' I admire his work, style and imagination, and the presentation was very good. I can't say I warm to the man himself.
I have read he was handy with a sword and may have cut off Van Goghs ear in a rage perhaps then departed in a hurry. I doubt Van Gogh self inflicted and one theory was he had syphilis and killed himself when his brain was infected as he knew what was coming.
@@bio-plasmictoad5311 Not because they could get away with it. It was simply accepted that the man was the head of the house and if he were to hurt his family he probably had good reason to. We could talk about so many artists in this fashion, but they're all dead. All of history is filled with geniuses who were fucked up in one way or another. Truth is, normal people aren't put into life for greatness. They just keep the wheel spinning, the great ones decide its course.
@@DarkAngelEU It's true that many people who have exceptional abilitys also have hughe devicites in other areas.. Nonetheless "normal" people certainly can live "lives of greatness" too. E.g. Emperor Claudius.. He was so boring, mediocre and all around harmless.. That the pretorian Guard after they slaughtered the entire Rest of the Emperors Familie & the Emperor himself.. decided they would make this normal potato the new emperor.. Claudius was a totaly normal potato.. with a long lasting and balanced marriage.. althou he certainly never immagined becoming emperor of rome. He actually became one of the greatest Rome ever had. Not only did Claudius appease the Imperium and settled its internal conflicts.. He also conquered Britania (modern england).. an extraordinary achivment.. Gaius Iulius Caesar himself failed to do this .. And so did the not so normal calligula as well.
Teeny tiny reproductions fail to show the power of the paintings. Why not show us a full screen of what your word-salads are about? LOOKING is more valuable than TALKING. Postage-sized reproductions show that you don't really want us to understand the paintings.

Terrific!
Profound speech. Provided me with a giant understanding of Gauguin's influence on art.

Riveting discussion of Gauguin's life and works. Excellent comparisons and slides

Sadly back then it was way more common for 'men' to hit their wife. Simply because they could get away with it.

Fascinating artist, dubious life - a visionary on both counts, alas.
Sorry…these things set my teeth on edge….how can the name Cézanne ever be pronounced the same way that she pronounces Gauguin?

'Nabis' then, 'noobies' now 😉

Why do you think that?
